I remember when Countdown first aired on Channel 4 opening night Tuesday 2nd November 1982, That the late Richard Whitely use to sit at the desk on the left and the two judges in the Dictonary corner, use to sit on the right. The tv company could extend the time on the clock to 60 second to allow extra time for the contestant to finish their spelling, but i think that would make the game boring and the tv company only got certain amount of time on the game, lol
