Muscle Mass? Yes because she wasn't drug enhanced nor I believe Allyson Felix or Muna Lee are like FLO-JO or Marlise Gohr in the past! Also the present Jamaicans and I hate to say it Americans too today breaking all the world records these days without the present science to detect it, YET! If you know your past history in the sport and study the statistics, it says it all! Oh yes I said it...I said the TRUTH!
If I understand your weird t e x t t e r m i n o l o g y, I guess you are saying Ashford was beaten by Gohr 3 times & you know of the two times she was beaten by her? All I know In 1979 at the World Cup in Montreal she won the 100m vs Göhr who settled for silver, again Ashford beat Gohr at World Cup '81! 83 World Champs she tore her hamsting. She won 84 Olympics but no Gohr there but later in the season she defeated Gohr once AGAIN at the Weltklasse meeting in Zurich with World Record 9.76!
She, Muna Lee and Allyson Felix are living proof that muscle mass doesn't always equate to running fast times. Hooray for the slim women sprinters! LOL
True. Muna Lee was with Kersee also but departed. After doing so, she won the 100m and placed second in the 200m at US Olympic trials in '08. Muna said Kersee focuses on technique. But she needed to get fast again, and she did.
underachieving? didn't she win like 3 worlds 200m titles? And one of those with a 21.8? How about her 48.1 relay carry? Conolly is awesome. But Kersee is king.
Ashford placed 5th at the '76 Olympics. She was 19 years old at the time. He last great Olympic moment was in '88: In the 4x100m relay, after a sloppy exchange from FloJo, Ashford ran down Gohr from behind and won the Gold medal for the US team. In the '92 Olympics Ashford ran the lead-off leg at age 35 for the relay team that also won Gold.
Aye. As far as I know, the only races in which she lost to Göhr were the 1977 World Cup, the 1983 USA/GDR duel and the 1983 World Champs, where she pulled her hamstring. Track and Field News ranked her as the #1 100-meter sprinter of all time in 2000. None have come close to challenging that. Marion Jones would have had a chance but she fucked it all up, big-time.
Ashford had lost to Gohr in the USA/GDR match the week before this race, in the World Champs final Ashford didnt finish due to a hamstring injury. The race in Zurich the following year remains my favourite clash between the two.
Awesome. What a start ! Imagine if Ashford had got that start in her 10.76 ! I think she would've been the first woman below 10.70, maybe 10.68-10.69. One of the Best Women Sprinters Ever and always a pleasure to watch
If she hadn't hurt her hamstring in the 1984 Olympic Trials 200, that 10.76 might have easily been 10.66. I wish she had run the 400 more. She might have won a medal in 1992, even at the age of 35.
Evelyn Ashord is the TRUE GREATEST naturally talented womens sprinter of ALL TIME!!

I read somehere that between 1977 and 1988, Ashford met Gohr on 15 occasions. Ashford won 12 of their 15 meetings. THE GREAT Evelyn Ashford.
