This version, I believe, was written by Oscar Brown, Jr. It is a clean version written for his first LP (1960), and in the 80s I often saw him perform it for children.
This takes me back, my dad used to get stoned and recite different "signifying monkey" poems. Signifying Monkey would get up to all kinds of mischief.
is this folk story comes from africa? do africans still have folk stories similar to the singnifyin monkey nowadays?

Best rendition of the story I ever heard...back in the '50's there was a song out about it.
Porky Chedwick used to play it on his DJ music show from Pittsburgh.

You do realize that story predates Rudy Ray Moore. We brought that shit over from Africa.
