The most important question we should be asking: WHY SHOULD THEY NOT GROW POPPIES? The demand for opiates will be the same regardless of where they come from. Drug prohibition doesn't work, so why are countries joining the hugely unsucessful "War on Drugs"? Because it's illegal, the Taliban will profit from the production & sale of heroin instead of legitimate businessmen. Lastly, opiates are not dangerous unless used irresponsibly (hence the numerous medical applications). END DRUG PROHIBITION!

War on drugs is a big shamble! There's way too much money being made from it to just destroy it all for good, as long as someones getting money coming to their pockets, they don't care bout the consequences n those people r "untouchable". As long as the big $'s coming in, nobody cares which way it comes in.

Small example: look @ da street dealers,they hear of ppl dying n ODing every day from their drugs but it doesn't bother them in slightest cuz no matter what that's what keeps their income.

if the gov sets up programs to replace one crop with another they can get rid of this problem, the war on drugs is nothing new, they fight the same battle in the US. you cannot build a nation on the exportation off opium, heroin is a drug that ruins lives and destroys famlies. weat, barley,corn ect can be proffitable aswell and feed comunities.

Cetnikz, you are correct on the CIA. It has long funded itself and the militias etc that it supports from drugs, mainly cocaine. There is a lot of reliable evidence of this. Anyone interested should read about Gary Webb who not only exposed the CIA for destroying communities in the US, he is also a prime example of what happens to those who challenge powerful organisations over their involvement in such trade; they are removed and silenced.

The reason I said that, was because resistence to the agressive and militant foreign policy of the US government is a brave and noble thing to do.If a foreign occupation force invades your country it is your duty as a citizen to fight the invader.If America loses strength and is invaded by, lets say China,it would be your duty to resist them.It is that simple.

US troops have no place there in any drug bust. The US has every right to try to shut down the taliban. The product that a country produces is more or less a domestic problem, if it is illegal in Afgahnistan, let their troops take care of it, not ours. Most of the busts are just farmers trying to feed their family, its just sick.

Poppie grows everywhere. Not just in afgan countries.the answer is not eradication! Its taking away food for the farmers familys etc. I believe their is no real one answer. But. Maybe if troops are withdrawn then they will all be fine. Its comPlex. Thats for sure.

If the troops leave the country will be totally destroyed. With the troops their all the nasty killing are put on TV for the world to see. As soon as we go the Taliban will kill thousands and no onw will know about it.  Then we will have to go back again...If the public supports for the long haul. There is a good chance the success of the coalition will accelerate and get the country sorted. But it still has a long way to go.

while the coalition is there , trouble will exist, during taliban rule the taliban were destroying poppy fields, they would break the hands and legs of farmers, they also stopped dog fighting and kept law and order. not the kind we would accept but the kind that their culture knows, with our laws/ culture it doesnt work, they need and iron fist of the taliban.
