I'm suprized Fred Ulfers never mentioned the crucial German word that was important for Goethe, Nietzsche, Kafka and Nobel prizewinner Canetti: "verwandlung". This word put things together what Ulfers attempts to explain here. "Verwandlung" means: metamorphosis, chancing scene. But it's associated to "verwandtschaft" meaning: having or being the same. Metamorphosis and metaphor are classic related: saying the same thing in another form. The word "wand" means wall: associated with form or mask.
