  • masturbation...

  • its funny because he thinks we can play that :P

  • gawd i love his red rc7 xD

  • why cant he EVER play something that doesnt involve something really fast!?

  • @AVFC0711: Because he's Rusty Fucking Cooley. Why does do most guitarists stay in the same boxy pentatonic scale? it's his style that he's perfected

  • too bad it doesn't sound as cool as it looks and feels to play

  • man, its no wonder the band was called outworld...

  • yeh, i could do that.. :'(

    *Sells guitar on Ebay

  • check it out duuuude, he has more lessons on Fret12's media page. its sweet!

  • shut up about feeling im so fucking tired off it! people allways complain no matter what !

  • i love how he plays cleaner when he plays fast! XD

  • he doesn't... everything sounds cleaner when it is fast.

  • who can play this????guitarists with feeling????i dont think so

  • i fucken hate when people diss fast players saying they dont play with feeling.

they play with just as much feeling as retarded slow players if not more.

just cuz they have the ability to play a million notes per minute doesnt mean they dont have feeling, they play there feeling at a million notes per minute.

and speed metal isnt suppose to be slow, thats why its speed metal.

rusty kicks all those retarded slow players' ass

  • so you think that music is just speed????

    naaaa, you are crazy....

the music is much more than speed.

    the music is a feel!!!

  • "they play with just as much feeling as retarded slow players if not more"

That's fucking retarded. By your logic, my computer plays with more feeling than *any* guitarist, because I can program a MIDI track to play twice as fast as Cooley.

  • I'd have no feeling after I played this eaither you fucking trolls.

  • is anger not a feeling?

dont go to speed metal expecting a solo melodic solo

thrash, speed metal, deth metal, etc is about playing fast and being agressive

if u play a fast paced song and then then just play the solo slow your point doesnt get across

  • "there is a harsh misconception that you can play the guitar with emotion or feeling, because it is really impossible"

*rofl* No. I'm a musician, and I've HAD transcendent moments where the right brain turns off, you forget about fingers, guitars, amps, scales, etc. and you're simply lost in sound, playing purely by feel. This has happened to me only a handful of times, but it happens more often to great players. But not all players do that, some are very cerebral. That's not necessarily bad.

  • Comment removed

  • "While it is possible to play things that evoke feelings, you never really play with emotion."

Again, that's simply untrue. There's a vast difference between coldly calculating which notes will produce a certain effect, and being good enough to sing with your instrument while letting your emotions take over. If you're a musician, and you've never experienced that, playing purely with your head, I pity you.

  • Comment removed

  • "Being 'good enough' to 'sing' (whatever this means) is what would usually be applied to blues guitarists or whoever, who suck outside of their own idiom."

First of all, what guitarist don't suck outside their own idiom, except for perhaps Guthrie Govan? Ever heard Yngwie try to play blues? Second, this nothing you have that technique and feel are mutually exclusive is... simple clueless. What shit guitarist are YOU listening to, honestly?

  • Comment removed

  • "And I find 'Second, this nothing you have that technique and feel are mutually exclusive is... simple clueless' poorly written, so I'm not going to reply to it."

'Nothing' was supposed to be 'notion'. I type fast; my fingers get ahead of my brain sometimes.

  • Comment removed

  • "You're ignoring what I said again, by addressing a statement I made later instead of prior, which was the one you originally ignored."

No, I didn't ignore it, fuck nut, I addressed it directly.

  • 'The best guitarists can play any genre they feel like, it's just a matter of preference.'

Yes, if your notion of genre is superficial. Govan is the only one of those you mention who has a really broad range, and all of them overplay like motherfuckers, Lane and Becker especially. You seem to value notes-per-minute above all other metrics.

  • Comment removed

  • "Jason Becker composes music in all genres without even being able to move"

    Yes, shitty music. You're point?

"Shawn Lane also has slow and melodic tracks"

Yes, I have most of his recorded output. He can also masturbate on the guitar like no other, playing purely from the fingers as fast as he can because he gets mechanical pleasure from it, something he freely admits.

  • "I think technique is essentially a measure of a guitarist's skills"

Which is fucking retarded. TECHNIQUE IS A MEANS TO AN END. Period. If you have nothing to say with that technique, you barely even qualify as a musician. Search YouTube for "official world record guitar speed" to see a guitarist (Tiago Della Vega) with ridiculous technique who fucking sucks. Guitarist with chops are a dime a dozen. Musical players with chops are much rare.

  • Comment removed

  • "I've seen the Tiago video, and he's famously full of shit. He isn't even picking all of that, basically 1/3 of it, and if you asked him how he played it, he'll say he picked it down-down up-up."

Nor does Ynwie, or any number of players with that kind of speed. Are you tryin to see that because he doesn't pick every note, he doesn't have chops? Is that the only way you can save your pathetic "technique = great musician" argument?

  • No, I'm saying while he has some picking chops skill (which is basically just spasmic arm twitches) he doesn't even have that world record, although he says he does, as the world record is for picking all of it. So basically, you have a poor example, due to lack of knowledge, in this instance that it's full of shit.

There is a difference between just speed and playing things that are hard quickly, and executing those things well. Gonna come up with another pretentious statement in response?

  • "No, I'm saying while he has some picking chops skill"

So he's a great musician. After all, technique is what matters. In fact, if a player can run up the a chromatic scale at 150bpm, he's automatically a great musician, because musicianship has nothing to do with actually creating music, it's just a matter of mechanical mastery of an instrument.

  • You're putting words in my mouth, like you did in point B of your comment below and A. Do you really have so much time to waste you'll reply to every single part of a comment with stupid ad hominem replies and even yet STILL miss some? Why are you arguing still?

I don't bother replying to most of the stuff you say because you feel it is necessary to post 2-4 in a row, although who knows why.

  • "basically, you have a poor example, due to lack of knowledge, in this instance that it's full of shit"

No, because I never said he was the fastest in the world, nor is it even relevant to the argument. You chose to focus on that because your argument is a failure and you needed a red herring to throw out.

Another example: Michael Angelo Batio. Tons of chops, nothing but boring, generic bullshit to do with it.

  • You didn't, but it is since you said it. You choose to reply to every single thing I say with even more ad hominem and an inflated sense of "victory". I also pointed out that your example was POOR, as it was. You acted as if it was solid, but you didn't (apparently) know the mistruth behind it.

I would stop wasting time, but then you would probably orgasm over the pent-up pretensious love you have of yourself. Stop ignoring the parts of my statements that are true, please.

  • "Stop ignoring the parts of my statements that are true"

I haven't, you whiny little bitch. If I respond to everything you say, you attack me. If I don't, you attack me. Either way, apparently the only arguments you can make are ad homimen, or absolutely laughable bullshit like "great technique = great musician".

  • Comment removed

  • "I find myself continuously amazed at how much bullshit you can spew with such conviction, since you pretty much issued an elaborate 'NO U!!!!!!!11!11!!!!1'"

No. You said "technique = musicianship". I've given examples proving that untrue, and you've tried to dodge by throwing out a red herring ("but he lied about holding the world record!") That's where we stand. You've given up any pretense at defending your ridiculous position, and have posted NOTHING but ad hominems since. You fail.

  • Comment removed

  • Again, another ad homimen, no longer trying to support your failed argument.

Still waiting for you tell us what a great musician Michael Batio is, given that he has good technique. By your asinine logic, if you train a deaf kid to play Bach on the piano, even if he has NO IDEA what sounds he's producing, he's a great musician.

  • Steve128967, via my inbox: "I punked you. I didn't mean anything I just said, I was just trolling you."

Pretty pathetic what people will resort to to save face.

  • Steve128967: "I lured you to PMs and now I can walk away with you blocked and my penis suitably engorged. It's all the sweeter if you think you won, because you've been suitably bamboozled."

So he loses an argument and tries to salvage his pride sending me private messages about his engorged penis.

    *facepalm*

Steve, hats off to you. You *are* a winner.

  • "I also pointed out that your example was POOR, as it was."

No, you said it was "poor" because he doesn't actually hold the world record, which is COMPLETELY FUCKING IRRELEVANT. If you didn't bring them up as a red herring -- if you actually thought it was relevant -- then you're dumber than I thought.

The point was that he has chops, but his a shitty musician, barely listenable, which is far from uncommon.

  • I'm just preparing for the shitstorm here, maybe you'll even reply to this and prove my point further. But then again, I already said you ignored my points that are true, so if you didn't, you'd prove that one too. You've backed yourself into a corner, essentially.

  • "I already said you ignored my points that are true"

No, I haven't. I not only responded to all your posts, I responded to each individual point in them, something you actually chastised me for. Can't have your cake and eat it, too, fuck nut.

  • Comment removed

  • why are u so angry lol

  • And on that note, who are you to say others barely qualify as a musician? Last I checked, music is an art that uses sound to convey itself, and you have no right to judge what is or is not. Who is your idea of a "musical" player with chops?

I sincerely hope you are not one of those people who don't understand people like Cooley and just say things like "noise not music" on his videos.

  • "And about Becker, have you even listened to Perspective?"

Did I say that all those players overplay all the time? No. Learn to read and learn to think.

"who are you to say others barely qualify as a musician?"

A person with ears. By your asenine logic, a player piano is a great musician, because it has flaweless technique.

"music is an art that uses sound to convey itself, and you have no right to judge what is or is not"

I have every right, fuck nut, as do you.

  • "That is essentially just improvisation, but unconscious."

Yes, it is. That's the whole point. You're using a different part of your brain, you're not playing entire from your head, and you can HEAR the difference. When it's happened to me, I found myself distantly aware of making strange expressions with my face, almost beyond my control. I can recognize that in other musicians now. I'm sorry you've never experienced it, or apparently cannot hear it.

  • "But you are not addressing what I said, that was more relevant, on the topic of playing something sad"

You put the cart before the horse. In other words, choosing to try to play something that sounds sad, rather than your playing naturally gravitating in that direction BECAUSE you are sad, or happy, or pissed, or horny, whatever emotion is informing your playing.

  • He must be really small. That guitar looks huge.

  • hes like 5'5- 5'7 range

  • is it possible to have your hands move that fast!!!????

  • well he just did so yeah lol

  • ok rusty rocks but he should say G# not a major :P

  • @ colonelallan:

if you think its shit, then why watch a Rusty Cooley video....he is a seriously underestimated guitarist!! His command of the guitar is sick! And even though its a million notes a second its still very musical!

  • ColonelAllan's mom:'My son is worthless in playing guitar and due to jealousy hes bitching excellent guitarist'

  • @SecksX a little harsh :S

  • I don't think he was dissing rusty, I think he meant it as in "crazy shit".

  • full time sweeper!!!

  • This is the man who inspired me to sweep pickin'!

  • whoops, sorry man i accidentaly thumbs downeed instead of thumbs up :(

    but yeah i agree

  • monster

  • puto

  • that guitar is HUGE!

  • Rusty Cooley is actually just small. I think he is like 5'5".

  • that just tells us anyone can do wild stretches like him, you just have to start way up high on the neck where the frets are small, and work your way down until its painful, and try to beat your record every time.

  • for me every one should start on a classic guitar!

  • 5'8

  • Are you serious? His hands are gigantic!

  • Alot of guitar players take both neck-thru and bolt-on necks on tour, they are more careful with the neck-thrus but don't worry about messing up there bolt-ons.

  • nayz..i like it...i think i'm gonna' die....

  • youtube . com/watch?v=ut37z-rKygE&mode=related&search=

  • This dude is rulz i hope there is more lessons of him he teach good =]

  • awsome vid thanks Rusty

  • he rocks :)

  • why is it that only fast players get a hammering?

  • Jealousy, pure and simple.

  • jesus how many frets is that??

  • u gatta start somwhere RIP Dime

  • eww. I don't like his guitar. it looks great but it sounds kinda metally (as in tin cans, not as in \m/ metal). maybe it would sound better with emg 81

  • It's a 7 string...an EMG 81 wouldn't work for it. It's actually equipped with EMG 707's. Just a note.

  • what are those like? anything near 81s?

  • I hate EMGs, period. Plus, I think his amp sucks. Rusty is a badass player but he needs better tone, badly. Bareknuckles and a Mesa Mark IV for lead would pwn his setup.

  • what amp is he using? I have his CD now but the sound is always kinda cheap jackson js series-ish. I dunno, that's just what came to mind when I heard it when he's using both pickups. it's like the distortion got watered down or something. but yeah what amp is he using?

  • It's this Diamond thing that I hate. Diamond amplification dot com.

  • He actually uses a Bogner Uberschall ( I think), the diamond, and a Rocktron Prophesy. Here I only see the rocktron.

  • now hes using a peavey 3120

  • 7 string equivalent of 81s

  • oh. and is there a reason rusty has a bolt-on guitar? I mean sure you'll never tell the difference in sound on a record with all his fast crap and effects, but I'd think he would want a neck thru.

  • heh i have no idea. maybe he doesnt really care so long as he can rip a hole in the space/time continuum with it?

  • hahaha. I hate bolt-ons though, they look cheap and awkward

  • but what happens when your Les Paul has a nasty knock and the neck's irreparable? The guitar is quite possibly a write-off.

  • my friend said that about neck thrus too, but all I can say is that if someone is enough of a klutz to break a neck thru, then he probably deserved it. in my book at least neck breakings are extremely rare, and if i broke a neck on a bolt on guitar i would probably just get a whole new guitar. i think the advantages of a neckthru beat the setbacks in the long run

  • That is a good point. Steve Vai is just very attached to Evo, but he likes to throw her around anyway. I think he replaces the necks on his guitars anyway. I suppose neck-thrus don't allow you to 'mix and match', but they make up for that with the tone.

  • heh I'd be scared to be steve vai's wife then.

  • Good point :P

  • ya yngwieloomis , i could play that in my sleep too. jk i wish .

  • amazing

  • No doubt he's a very technical player but he's so fast he sounds like garbage.

  • i wish i was so fast it sounded like garbage eh maurizio82

  • If you mean you wish you would sound like that, then it's your call, mate! It's just not pleasant to listen to.

  • i wish i could do half the stuff he can

  • well guess what dumass, hes in a band, hes got a nice life, and ur just a sorry as loser flaming vids on youtube. so insult his speed all u want, but guess what...he cant hear u, so ur wasting ur time.

  • you're just a sorry ass loser flaming my comment on Youtube. I guess that makes you worse.

  • Maurizio: I think this sounds amazing... but I notice that a lot of people who like shred guitar are guitarists themselves. I think that a person may need to have a trained ear to be able to hear everything that's going on. The more theory I know the better I like this stuff.

  • Sounds like total ass! Dan Huff is a better player and he also sings as well! Oh yeah he is also a producer in Nashville! Listen to GIANT for a real guitarist/songwriter.

  • simply amazing!

  • ohhhhhhhhhhh yeeeeeeeeeeeeahhhhhhhhhh

  • thank you rusty.
