Hang on... If the reapers are AI... maybe the Protheans made the Reapers, and like with the Geth, the reapers turned on their makers, only Prothean tech meant that the Reaper AI was much more advanced, allowing for self advance to the extent of whole ships gaining group sentience.

The Reapers, having Intelligence enough for logic, enslaved their creatures and twisted them to serve them. Like Mordin says, the Collectors are tech now.

@TheRealBarnez theres a problem with that theory in the game it states that the reapers took out many galaxies before the protheans also the keepers that the reapers created as already at the citadel when the protheans discovered it. but yeah when i learned what happened to the protheans i shat my pants in amazement.

That has been disproven before. The Direlict Reaper itself is far older than the Protheans.  Further, the Mass Relays predate them.

This would have been CANON if BioWare actually gave the Collectors a role in ME1. You just couldn't care about the Collectors' backstory in this game that much.

Also it's no surprise collectors dont look like protheans (judging by Ilos statues). Collectors have 3 fewer chromosomes than protheans. In comparrison, humans have 2 fewer chromosomes than apes, and we barely look alike

You know, the one where you kill several Blue Suns, find a beacon like the ones you chased after in Mass Effect 1, and see a more complete version of the Protheans' warning message about the Reapers?

@cloudofawesome Can't remember right now the exact words, but I took it as EDI saying the Collectors had changed too much since the Prothean extinction to be considered Protheans, not unlike homo sapiens being different from homo erectus.

Now all that Bioware needs to do is introduce a "lost colony" of Protheans who survived the Reaper purge to settle this matter, and make one of them become a squadmate.

If you read Mass Effect: Ascension, which was out a good deal before ME2 and set after the events of the first game, it introduced the Collectors in a small way, but what it did say made it fairly obvious for you to guess that they were going to be the Protheans or some such repurposed species. It was still nice to have it confirmed in ME2 though

On the subject of giving nukes to cavemen, I used to nuke cavemen on the expansion for the original Empire Earth. For some reason if I advanced to fast the AI would never advance. Then I would lob nukes at the cavemen, let them rebuild, and send the close to extinction again. That never got old for some reason.

@KoronofHearts I'd argue we never knew how the protheans looked. Hell, there's a Prothean beacon in ME2 that shows you the old message of warning against the Reapers, but this time you can see clearly what does one of the fleeing victims look like... and it looks like a Collector.

@Gauldoth there are statues on Ilos that show very clealy what protheans looked like (tall, thin, tentacle like hands and beards). they look nothing like collectors, however given 50 000 years to genetically alter a species' DNA and you can change everything about that species to make them indistinguishable from their ancestors.

@Fleabr The reasoning no one care was there was no actual build up to the revelation. There was no pieced together clues to be seen and felt pretty out of left field because of it. The idea would have been executed much better had first off the Collectors been an established race in the first game. Their workings with the Reaper not being a sure thing also would have also. It's why a show like Lost actually isn't good when you think about it. They have plot twist that don't add up to each other.
