how come for some books, they write shop as ya instead of mise?

@fusionofhearts shop can also be shouten "商店". loads of different ways to write kanji

Useful vids these.

When in doubt of the name of a shop, the next best thing is to take the name of the item they sell and and 'ya' to the end. For example:

'Hana' is flower, so 'Hanaya' is flower shop.

'Sakana' is fish, so Sakanaya' is a fishmonger's.

etc...

ちょっとね。。。When I was in Japan, I always used スーパー. That's more widely used correct?

スーパー is more common because it's easier to say than スーパーマーケット

i've noticed that Japanese shortens long words (i guess it's to make it uniform with the rest of the words, which are shorter in comparison to English)

@eien21 yes suupaa is more common but u said suubaa ur ha needs the circle in stead to make the paa sound instead or baa

Though not everyone would understand, for those familiar with the Japanese style police box, that's a better translation of "kouban".
