They were stunningly effective live. I once saw them at the Victoria Hall in Hanley supporting someone. A band cancelled at the North Staffs Poly, and Radio Stars packed up and went to fill in for them later the same evening. Most of the audience followed them down. It was a riot. They were great fun and a really good, daft, tight, pop rock band. 'Dirty Pictures' is hilarious. Is there another pop song that uses the word 'strictures'?
There was this weird period in 1976 where people reinvented themselves. No problem with that. But when you're 15, you have the finest tuned bullshit detector. Good tunes but no heart. I still like Box 29 though, because they weren't trying so hard.
I was 16 back then and i refused to go and see "Old men" with mullets trying to be punks..!! How they managed to shift so many records at a time when there were so many aggressive new bands still surprises me.....funny how the wheel turns full circle though as now iam the "Old man" trying to be a punk..!!
@asmzmoatllb .....Look bud just give it up, sorry but the history of punk rock will not be re-written as the mere mention of the radio stars is a joke. lol.!
@JustaScotsman The Radio Stars might not have been great, but you can't discredit Andy Ellison's past because of a crap career move. Ellison is one of music's forgotten heroes.
They supported Eddie and the Hot Rods on their first two big tours - fairplay to the Hot rods cause they must have known that this lot would go down a storm - they were a great live band - The Hot Rods were great every time though.
Thanks for posting. Where has my copy of that Chiswick (I believe) record label album...yes, 12inch vinyl... gone? Compilation....with this and 'Guns of Navarone' - 'Saturday Night under the plastic palm-trees, dancing to the rhythm of the Guns of Navarone' - and a track from the fascist 'Screwdriver' band on it. Of course this may well be nonsense brought about by middle-age...someone help me! Was this album given away with....'Sounds' magazine...or NME?
Has anybody got their performance of "Nervous Wreck" from Top Of The Pops in 1977 at all?.It was shown once on Top Of The Pops 2 I think about ten years ago.
@hallinansenior As far as I know they released as singles Nervous Wreck,Dirty Pictures,Stop It (EP) (Featuring No Russians In Russia),From A Rabbit,The Real Me and Radio Stars.
Hey look...a member of the band and he's smarting.
Being your diametric opposite, my being a cunt makes you a cock right? Your logic does you proud missus...as does your user name. I bet you're the life and soul at a party eh funny guy. What a wag.
How cool is this? Radio Stars are so cool - what a shame they never get more popular than they did. Strongly recommend their "Holiday Album" - top stuff, rock on Andy Ellison!
This song has haunted me since I first saw it at time of broadcast. Through the internet wilderness of the 80s, I have spoken its praises to all and sundrie at late night parties; given it punk credentials that relied on my (well respected)musical taste...only to finally hear it once again after 30 years and hear it for the pile of crap that is is. What a bunch of no-mark, old fuck useless fools these guys were.
Sorry you don't remember the good times. Like Haraldfilms, I saw them at Dundee Uni in 78 I think and they were brill, brought the house down, I remember the lead singer climbing up the lighting gantry and singing upside as he hung from it.
You've turned into an old git bluemauvey, we're all still punks at heart
As for bitterness, well one should always keep a place in one's heart for it. You never know when you're going to run out of spleen see.
No, I stand by the fact that they were crap. Worse than crap even, mediocre. It's like watching Black Lace trying on bondage trews. It aint big...and it aint clever.

These days I listen to Garge Punk...I don't even have Phil Collins as a reference for Chrissakes.
This band suck, irregardless of any Bolan/John's Children connection. It's abject dross posturing as vital. If they had a modicumof importance I'd suggest the singer should be sniped form a college tower...but I would guess he's never been near a college.
I think I'll just stick to throwing my tuppence in on here, the last place anyone even knows of it (said song). That way I get to meet those who defend, by their own admission, the irrelevant. Perfect.

Marty ( an old git too )

Marty, you're the reason why they invented New Wave. It's all your fault.
If you ever find the true punk bitterness inside you, you are more thanwelcome in the old gits club. Until then...
bluemauvey 4 years ago
Didn't mean to offend BM, was never into the politics of it all and was certainly never bitter.
I just enjoyed the music for what it was at the time, they all made a contribution to our music culture, good or bad.
I just think it's a little harsh on them now to say that they were crap.
You need to refind your former well respected musical taste.Always trust your gut feelings.

Hé BLUE ,wot doya listen to these days ?
Phil Collins I reckon.
I agree this is not thé best version, the studio versions were more direct, and by the
way, Andy Ellisson invented "punk"way before
it's time , in '67 with John's Children. you were wrong in the first place when you heaped
your "punk"credentials on them,This band was
in 78 totally outside the "punk"movement.
Blame yoself mááán .
