The problems Kournikova had on her serve stemmed primarily from the fact that she didn't really hit up on the serve, but rather across her body. It may sound counterintuitive, but in order to maximize your control over the ball (with spin) and not hit it into the net you have to expose more of your racquet face to the ball. See what I mean by comparing Steffi's racquet work at the top of her service motion and Kournikova's.
