the point here to remember is that in no way does this completely discount the religion. The idea is that the religious INSTITUTION has been altered, and manipulated to gain control throughout history. It doesn't change the things that have happened, and faith is still important. However the institutions behind the decisions i.e.: the Vatican etc. Generally have different ideals at heart than just the religion, and you should view all their actions objectively and not follow them blindly.
