12 years on the Air Force around all kinds of military and even civilian aircraft, Not flying mind you. But I love aircraft and flying. If I had the opportunity to take one of these babies up for a flight, I'd have a BALL. I think it's Great!! If I had the funds for one, I'd say "to Heck with the motorcycle idea! I want THIS!!" The last motorcycle I considered the "poor man's fighter jet" since I never got to fly in one. I'd LOVE to have one of these! Great job ICON Aircraft!
@Austyg yes it has a stall speed of less than 40 mph because of the new LSA category pilots license.most aircraft have a 4:1 glide ratio.it depends mostly on altitude and speed.
Trust me with Bart Becht on-onboard, this company is ensured to become the Ferrari of the 21st century, this guy is an alchemist; whatever he touches becomes gold....
It looks really nice and something I'd love to "tour" in, but 105 knots maximum speed, 300 miles range and a baggage capacity (according to their website) of 60lbs really doesn't really cut it.
I'll take a turboprop real plane - even used. A Turboprop Goose would be perfect, although that would cost a bit more if new.
@emilaero Yes that type of folding wing is unique, not like any other plane with folding wing, almost all planes fold up/in half or detach, fighter planes have inward hydralic folding wings, closest to this plane is The Short SB.6 Seamew but still folds manual
In Poland if you have a UAP liscence you can fly airplanes that wiegh about 1091 lbs (495 KG), Unfortunatly this aircraft weighs too much for a UAP so in Poland you need a PPL to fly this : (
Light sport aircraft are defined by the FAA as simple, low-performance, low-energy aircraft. That standard would make this plane an icon of a glorified, stylized golf cart rather than a sports car, wouldn't it?
@airste172 I wouldn't exactly call Light Sport aircraft low-performance. I have flown Cessna's,Pipers, and Diamonds. The Flight Design CTLS light sport that I do most of my flying in outperforms them all.
this thing is awesome, I have been wanting my pilot liscence for some time, but with this on the horizon, I absolutely MUST get to getting. Anyone know the range on this thing?
Auto designers had a hand in its development? Oh god.... modern cars have the stupidest, most user-unfriendly gauges and electronics! This is not a good idea
$139,000 for something that has a "maximum speed" of 120mph??? I'd rather buy a supercub on floats, and then you've got a real airplane that'll carry more, have more versatility and get airborne in 1/4 of the distance that this thing does. Good job on marketing, though -- I'd probably buy one if I didn't know any better.
i would still buy an IFR equpiied time tested old hag cessna...but not this "toy plane" made by people who trying to equate flying with driving. its such a disgrace.

So this looks like an awesome recreational vehicle, but honestly, how safe is this thing? I would imagine there are communications. Are there any important instruments if say you hit some clouds? altimeter?
are you high????? seriously what kind of brain dead questions are those???? its been designed by a fighter pilot!!. of course it has a altimeter, of course it will have communications, and like most planes of course it will be safe!! i think the real question is, how hard did you hit your head as a baby?
But why would you ever be in a situation where you are already on the water and want to fold the wings up? I'm not sure that makes sense, DigitizeThis. Wouldn't you just want to keep them unfolded for when you fly off again? Or if you are docked you could just fold them easily, right?
If it wasn't for man's quest for speed, we'ld all still be driving around in Model Ts on dirt tracks and cobble stones.
If the future where people travel around in the skies like the do on the roads today is to be made possible, then this leap needs to be taken. The future is in the skies cuz the roads can't handle the growing population of out planet.
Affordable cars for everyone was Henry Ford's dream and it changed the world. Like fast cars, flying doesn't need to be just for the elite!
And what impresses me the most about this is its cockpit. Unlike the usual clutter of mostly incomprehensible dials and equipment you find in a usual aircraft cockpit, its got a cockpit like a sports car with a joystick controller. It makes all the essential parameters lot easier to comprehend and the whole plane a lot easier and simpler to control.
This really has been designed not for people who fly planes but for people who drive cars.
This is gonna be the bridge towards future air travel!
This is the reinvention of the plane. Its is the next leap of humans from the ground into space.
Its only 139K, which might look a lot in car terms but is really cheap in aircraft terms. And maybe future production could reduce its cost even further.
Its got a small engine and will run on normal petrol you fill your car with. Which again makes it even more economical.
I say it wouldn't be too long till you can buy an electric version of this too with Li-ion batters and an electric motor!
Hopefully they sell strong and the price drops a bit. It really is a revolution in aviation. The only downside to this whole concept is more people (and morons) will be in the air and the fatality rate will most likely shoot up. :(
2:16 - "All on regular unleaded gasoline" - Actually the Rotax 912ULS requires 91 octane gas (ideally 92, but I run mine on 91 all the time, because 92 isn't available in California.) The 80-horse UL version will run on 87, but this airplane (thankfully) uses the 100-horse ULS instead.
One thing I forgot. It seems like ICON is not just selling an aircraft, they're selling a whole new concept. I never thought you could fit those car-like landing lights into an airplane. As the video described it, the "if you can drive, you can fly" concept is fantastic.
Congratulations to Kirk Hawkins and ICON Aircraft. I believe ICON will be the first company to fill a long forgotten gap. WIth the A5, aviation might really turn into a real sport for everyone. I see a good revenue for this company in the future. Safety looks fantastic, specially with the BPRS. What happened to the ADI and HSI in the cockpit? The price seems a bit high for me, with the Cessna 162 settling around $112,500.00 for 2010.
Kinda sad because i would love to have one, and im prolly the only black person thats even interested in this. I cant see to many black people fuckin with this because you cant put rims on this.lol. nah im just fuckin around, but this is pretty cool
I have 1 question about this aircraft: Can you taxi this aircraft from land straight into water, or water straight onto land? Another aircraft can which is similar to this one 'Colyaer S100 Freedom'
ICON looks too underpowered to be fitted with retractable wheels, just not enough HP . I bet it folds up like the BedeJet , hope not but it just barely seems to fly now without the 300lbs of landing gear
The folding wings are not automated, as of this writing, unless you want to give up the landing gear and have a straight seaplane. If you select the automatic wingfold option, you will have no amphibian aircraft, because ICON will not install the "standard feature" known as the (retractable) landing gear. The plane would be too heavy otherwise. You can only get wheels if you go with manually folding wings. If so, you have to get out to fold the wings, which would be interesting in deep water.
I don't get how people do not understand the beauty of this plane. Its for enjoyment and mobilty. Why the hell would you want speed, get yourself a freaking jet or ferrari. Leave this plane for the rest of us who enjoy what life and our planet have to offer.
it sounds really cool, but as a sport reacreational aircraft (sra) it is useless if it is incapable of vertical take-off and landing. An amphibius sra with hovering and vertical capabilities will not be a bad idea in short, a hybridised amphibius recreational sports helioplane (HARSH)
Yeah but vertical T/O and landings are kind of hard. Most people wouldnt be able to handle it. Where as this thing is much more in peoples capability.
does anybody know the name of the game that was on a next world about video games and 3D televisions. in the game they were racing in buggys with miniguns in the desert. if anybody know the name of it plz reply
It is compared to a jet. BUT: I took my airplane, which goes about 130MPH, from LA to Las Vegas and back recently. It was about an hour and a half both ways (more like 1:20 coming back since we had a magnificent tailwind.) If I took my car, it would be more like 4-5 hours each way, slower if I'm not lucky. This isn't for intercontinental flights, but if you want to fly to some place 100-500 miles away, it is WAY faster than cars... and no idiots clogging the left lane to slow you down. :)
Even a sport pilot license is hard enough to get that it will weed out a lot of people who don't belong in the air. I wish there was a better medical requirement, but even so, I doubt 90% of people with the skill to drive (passably) have the wherewithal to successfully complete the test even for a SP license. It's not just stick and rudder, you have to know regs and radio and demonstrate good situational awareness and be able to divide your attention properly under pressure. You can't BS it.
It was the same when people first started racing cars back in the early 20's. When a lot of rich people were racing big Bentleys with 6l engines capable of going over 100mph in an open cockpit with no seat belts and no airbags.
If governments back then had said "look at the amount of people crashing! this is crazy, lets ban motor racing", we wouldn't have even half the technologies we take for granted in our cars today. Let around Ferraris and Porsches!
@skylinefolife flying is actually easier then driving, just takes awhile to pick up, and its good idea i think, ud still have to have a license to flying
@skylinefolife take a chill pill man, there aren't trees, or stray dogs in the skies. or the water for that too. and if youre gonna come up with birdstrikes, they bring down even migs, so don't.
@thekaizer666 Lmao. I know, dude. Imagine having a head on collision with another plane? lmfao! They already happen, and look how spacious the sky is. Imagine a sky full like your closest freeway during peak hours? No bueno ;o Not only that, you'll just be chilling smoking a blunt and then out of no where your buddy gets creamed by a downed plane? That's fucked up :P haha.
But will it blend?

140g's isn't that bad for a nice plane like that some sports cars like the GTR are over 100gs so might as well spend 40 more to get a plane :P
Soccermaniac3555 1 year ago
The problem is, as it almost always is with sport aviation aircraft, is lack of usability. It's underpowered and has a serious payload restriction. It's a lot of dough, (starting price of $140,000) with no extras, to fly something that makes it tough to be a shared experienced, not to mention an overall lack of usablity.

The plane would be too heavy otherwise. You can only get wheels if you go with manually folding wings. If so, you have to get out to fold the wings, which would be interesting in deep water.

Exactly, its not the destination with this plane, but the journey, enjoy the ride!

Where as this thing is much more in peoples capability.

what 120 mp/h...kinda slow
Peterr86 2 years ago
It is compared to a jet. BUT: I took my airplane, which goes about 130MPH, from LA to Las Vegas and back recently. It was about an hour and a half both ways (more like 1:20 coming back since we had a magnificent tailwind.) If I took my car, it would be more like 4-5 hours each way, slower if I'm not lucky. This isn't for intercontinental flights, but if you want to fly to some place 100-500 miles away, it is WAY faster than cars... and no idiots clogging the left lane to slow you down. :)

it stilllooks like a damn plane only one man made a hover car that dnt look like a plane n he lives in america
brownshadow13 3 years ago
If you can drive, you can fly?
That's not good. Everyone thinks they're good drivers when in reality they are not.
I can only imagine the number of deaths.

@skylinefolife flying is actually easier then driving, just takes awhile to pick up, and its good idea i think, ud still have to have a license to flying
marksman712 1 year ago
@skylinefolife take a chill pill man, there aren't trees, or stray dogs in the skies. or the water for that too. and if youre gonna come up with birdstrikes, they bring down even migs, so don't.
thekaizer666 1 year ago
@thekaizer666 It's called being realistic. I'm not trippin, I just hope they don't land on any buildings.
skylinefolife 1 year ago
@thekaizer666 Lmao. I know, dude. Imagine having a head on collision with another plane? lmfao! They already happen, and look how spacious the sky is. Imagine a sky full like your closest freeway during peak hours? No bueno ;o Not only that, you'll just be chilling smoking a blunt and then out of no where your buddy gets creamed by a downed plane? That's fucked up :P haha.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
top speed of 105 knots - that's a piece of shit and it can't even do IFR.

I would love to see these as rentals near lakes like jet skis. I know that would probably never happen but it's just an idea.

Get your Sport Pilot Certificate and you can then rent one.
