  • In 1972 Pilots from the USS America Bombed and blew up the Thanh Hoa Bridge.

  • KB4QAA, you are absolutely righy. That has made the video even cooler. Thanks for the help.

  • Cool! but... where is the bridge attack? Anyway, we can see how skillful one needs to be to land on a aircraft carrier deck.

  • @MrRoulf Around 3:15 the plane is nose low banking right, then lefft, then right for lineup on the target. At extreme lower left corner along the river the AAA batteries are twinkling, then bombs are released and the plane violently jerks right.

p.s. Why is an A-6 so loud? Because it take a lot of noise to push that much ugly! :) Cheers from an admiring ex P-3 NFO.

  • Alpha strike?

  • South Vietnam's government invited US army into VN and killed Vietnamese people. So we can not blame anything for Viet Cong.

  • @trinhngocde

hey dickhead !!! what do you know about the VN war ????....if you do have something important to say, say it....if it is what you heard from your current government STFU.....people which a conscience should not believe what the communist party saying....did they ever tell you the truth about anything at all....

  • That was the only bird aboard Enterprise that would shake the entire boat, right down to E-div berthing on launch. Incredibly loud engines.

  • thanks for the post, I've always wanted to sit in the right seat on the A6.

  • God, how many times did they need to hit the Thanh Hoa bridge?

  • @CVKent317 why are u worried about it

  • @jumpyjedi

I'm not worried, I"m just amazed that they needed to hit it so many times to bring it down...

  • 1966, year I graduated from high school. Also the year the navy's "ROC" program took one look at my myopia and then not so politely showed me to the exit. Had the grades but not the eyes. Navy pilots HAVE to have PERFECT eyesight and incredible stamina...Damn! A BIG disappointment in my life...

  • Nope; the RA-5C was originally designed to replace the A3D in the nuclear strike role. Its weapons bay was less-than-operable so the birds were turned into reconaissance platforms. By 1977 most were phased out.

  • I was aboard the Conny in 1972 and this brought back memories, from red shirt to blue shirt, then back again in HS-6 squadron in 1973. I had seen fully loaded A-6 intruders getting ready for strike mission, an F-4 coming back from a mission with its belly on fire and wing skin peeled upward (flak hit) and a vigilante crash right after take-off.

  • It's a North American R/F-5 Vigilante. Designed origionally to take on the Mig-25 Foxbat Russian fighter, it was capable of Mach 2. Roles changed from a high altitude interceptor when Gary Powers high flying U-2 spyplane was shot out of the sky by a Russian SAM, so it became a reconnaissance aircraft, launched from carriers aswell as from land bases. One of the BEST looking aircraft America ever designed. Looked like Mach 2 just standing still !

  • Can someone please identify the aircraft at 4:39 ? looks like F-111 but its too sleek and kind of experimental with the white paint

  • Great video ...real footage...hate that music though

  • I've done this a few times myself with VA85 in spring of '67.

    Murph

  • @murphVA85 Sometimes I drive my old nazi tiger tank down the road and crush other people's cars.

  • @murphVA85 murphy is the stereotypical army name.

What a joke you're probably ten.

  • @murphVA85 as they gain speed on the runway air flows over the leading edge of the wings which chanels some air UNDER the wing and less air OVER the wing , this causes a Vacuum over the wing and you know how nature hates a vacuum so the wing rises. You can figure it out now. BTW a helicoptor wing (rotor) works on the same principle

  • I don't understand - how do they stay up in the air like that? Are we all looking forward to xmas?

  • garbage video, who the fuck needs to spend 2 minutes reading about a "family keyes" bunch of shit, and not one pic of a bomb drop. Garbage vid, garbage family.

  • That's the way to do it! Shoot up the commies, then it's back home for tea and medals. And maybe some sex with Kelly McGillis. That's if Maverick didn't go the gay way with Iceman. Because TOP GUN is not really a love story, it's about a group of men struggling to come to terms with there homosexuality, or maybe it is a love story.

Not that this has anything to do with the United States Navy, just want to clarify that.

  • Wow! nice one

  • excellent video mate. Last AI with VA-85 "Black Falcons"

  • And Nixon was tried to convince China not to let the Russian supplies to Vietnam en-route China. Seriously, he tried to tell the three communist friends not to help each other. What a dummy.

  • Beautiful aircrafts, nice looking bombs, and the music, but seriously, you guys couldn't break down the Ham Rong bridge in Thanh Hoa. It's the only route for the North to send troops and arms to the South. Blimey! were you guys so stoned that you kept bombing the waves and smashed the water to pieces and thought you had destroyed the bridge. How could you failed that mission with all the US air power. Just better off go back to play Viet Cong video games.

  • Great footage. Thanks for uploading

  • I know a pilot who flew an A-6 intruder and was shot down in Vietnam . He was lucky enough to make it over water and was rescued.

  • Crazy to see F-111's on the carrier deck, what a POS that plane was.

  • @livinlvis Those planes are A-5 vigilante's not F-111.. F-111 was land based only.

  • President Nixon convinced the Chinese to stop allowing Soviet arms shipments for Vietnam from crossing their territory. He ended the war and ended the draft.

The tremendous cost of the war during President Johnson's administration was due to his reluctance to expose more American troops to combat, so he used carpet bombing and napalm instead. This strategy failed and turned the Vietnamese people against the U.S. effort to stop the spread of communism in Southeast Asia.

  • We could have defeated those bastard communists, but the "Peaceful" Hippies caused us to lose. Fuck them we should have bombed woodstock as well as Hanoi.

  • @ajsaccount1991..... Ah yes the bleating of someone who was either never in the military or if by some miracle they passed the psych and got in.... Never lasted long. Keep bleating you ignorant shit.

  • the Vietnam war ended for 35 years.Provocative comments on internet do not bring nothing useful for anyone.

  • "Danger Zone".....gimme a break........

  • @vonkiser

Music is godawful, anachronistic and overbearing

The video creator would have done better playing Sabaton - "Into the Fire" over this footage

  • Finaly Vietnamese won, their enemy lost

  • If Vietnam won, I would hate to think what is losing. Vietnam is a poisoned shithole. There are 13 million disabled, crippled, deformed Vietnamese. The over use of petro-chemicals for fertilizer and pest crontrol has caused widespread devastation. Vietnam has the greatest polution of furans and dioxin from using low quality coal for home heating/cooking as well as for electrical generation than any nation in the world, Vietnam has poisoned itself using human wastes in food re-ingesting poisons.

  • @xuixuanxui 1000 years late panic escape from Vietnam in30/4/1975 will be remind of as disgraceful lost superpower to the will of nation that fought for his independent and freedom.

  • Democracy is crap. It's communism in disguise. There are no rights in a democracy. No property rights, no rights of any kind that the majority doesn't want you to have. Unfortunately, the majority is very poor at making decisions, and your masters use this to their advantage to enslave you. America has yet to fight a legitimate war for a just cause. All it has been is a weapon for the jews to continue their centuries of mass murder. SubvertedNation (dot)(net) Never mind, you know better right?

  • US Air Force flew over 5.25 million sorties over South East Asia during the Vietnam war. The loss rate was .04 per 1000 mission. This figured favorably with Korea which had a loss rate of 2 per 1000 missions and WW2 was 9 per 1000 missions. Most losses were due to AAA and 500 losses were due to mechanical failure.

  • PRO-COMMUNIST SENATOR "HANOI" JOHN KERRY SUPPORTS BRUTAL COMMUNIST VIETNAM BY KILLING VIETNAM HUMAN RIGHTS ACT IN THE SENATE.

He considers dirty money and economic ties with Vietnam much more important than democracy and human rights values. Consequently, Vietnam, has waged a new crackdown on democracy activists such as Father Nguyen van Ly and lawyers Nguyen van Dai and Le thi Cong Nhan, who were given unfair, harsh sentences of several years in prison for their democracy activities.

  • Amazing footage, thanks for uploading,

  • Nice footage thanks for posting!!!

But.....I really wish you would have chosen a different kind of song instead of that cliche'-esque "Danger Zone"!

Sorry, but I can't stand Tom Cruise and every time I hear this song I see that little twerp's face!!

  • The Vigilante at 4:40 -appears to have tail damage - Am i seeing this correctly?

  • Wouldn't surprise me. RA-5s flew some hairy ass missions in Nam.

  • @castlite

It could also fold it's rudder so as the Viking, maybe only thats what happened. But Im not sure ;)

  • well done war criminals! killing defenceless people, just like in Iraq. times haven't changed.

  • The real war criminal is the person who must have forgotten to tell the people shooting back that they were supposed to be "defenseless"!

  • @scoita You are an idiot that hasn't earned the right to free speech.

  • Really need an one minute long intro???

  • Nice footage! I agree, there are so many musics to be used instead "Danger zone".

Yep, there was a beautiful A-5 Vigilante on movie and, there is a A-3 Skywarrior also. Great footage!

  • The Jet at 4:40 looks to be a RA-5C Vigilante or A-5 Vigilante.

  • Confirm that. Note the slanted intake manifold. No other Navy plane of that era had that. And I'll bet that was a concern to the flight deck crew.

  • Comment removed

  • It's confirmed RVAH-6 used RA-5C's during their deployment aboard the USS Constellation, which is the aircraft carrier pictured in the video. I confirmed looking at old deployment records.

  • I would not want to be plane director on the flight deck with one of those. We had a shipmate sucked into the intake of an F-8 and even though he lived he had blood coming from most of the orifaces in his head. I got the job of documenting the FOD damage that occurred. It is true that the flight deck of a carrier is the most dangerous workplace on earth.

  • What plane is that at 4:40? I think I've seen it before but it looks out of place, both on the carrier deck and the era.

  • Yeah, the music is definitely wrong for this. It's not like there wasn't plenty of great music around in 1966.

  • Nice footage but I agree with Toonces37 about the soundtrack. I think vintage 1966 songs would have been better.

  • You lost me as soon as I heard the TopGun theme.

    Sorry bro, 1 star.

  • 873 air sorties were expended against the Thanh Hoa bridge and it was hit by hundreds of bombs and missiles before being finally destroyed in 1972.

  • great video, R. COTTEN E-4 USMC 1967-1971

  • Tom Cruise was the best pilot the Navy ever had.

  • What ship was that? Was it the Connie? I was not aware that A-4 squadrons served at the same time on the same ship as A-6 squadrons. We had wood decks and could not take the weight of F-4s or A-6s but we did have an A-3.

  • rockin' tunes lol

  • those dudes were crazy

  • How did you transfer the movie from film to video?

  • Normally how this is done is either:

Use a device with mirrors(I have one) designed for that purpose or more simply, in a totally dark room set up your projector with a good quality screen and your camera on a tripod right next to it and just tape the film. Some projectors have audio, if the film was shot that way, and you can run a audio patch cord into the audio input of the camera.

  • Thanks.

I thought you used the process whereby a frame by frame scan is made of the film.

    Your transfer looks good.

  • Love the A6 nice video but I hate the music still five stars

  • Thank you for your service and sacrifice!

We 're always grateful the US Military...

    *Freedom is not free!

  • Awesome footage of the early A-6A ! Thanks.

  • Awesome! Thanks for you service..

  • The only Top Guns are Gary Cooper, Tom Cruise (Maveric) and Val Kilmner.

  • very good video but Top Gun soundtrack? C´mon let´s rock :-)

  • OK, so you take off from a carrier (yikes), fly with a bunch of bombs under your wings into a danger zone (OMG), drop them and go back and land on a carrier (scary stuff)... All in a days work?

  • very old bombs under the Intruder wings

  • Yep look like old WW2 1000lbers

  • Cool. Well at least we've established relations again, and can just look at this as part of history. What a waste of money and lives. My bother was in the USMC at Da Nang. He died 6 years ago of cancer from Agent Orange.

  • I´m sorry about your bother. RIP.

  • lol,i was born in thanh hoa city, this bridge is Hamrong and now it's a nice bridge :D
