Hospitals all over the world treat patients with broken legs, it's normal to expect that kind of thing in a hospital but that doesn't mean it's normal for them to be kept in disgusting conditions.
That doesn't mean it's normal for them not to be treated with proper medical attention.
And even if it was normal, it certainly doesn't mean it's right, or humane in any way.

They did do something. The "facility" was shut down. A lot of the animals came to my local shelter including the poor cat that the one "human" was trying to tear the claws off of.

I think the lab cared more about what the USDA was going to do than what peta would do (annoying protests I imagine). Citizens should always turn over information about abuses like this to the authorities. If there is research to be done (god knows what they could be doing here) animals should be treated humanly. There is no excuse for miss treating animals, but total animal liberation isn't the answer either.
What happens to the people that we see abusing the animals? Closing the lab is not enough! They need to put those people under psyco evaluation. They were comfortable in abusing an innocent animal. What would they do to a infant or child that they became short fused with? We need to push for an answer.
