Excellent performance by Jake, and the man was a genius with words. It's the kind of story that Chaucer or Boccacio would have been proud of.
OK: I know the young man in the movie is Robin Askwith, the star of the low budget "Confessions of" series. But I'm stuck on the movie - Is it "Confessions of a Driving Instructor"?
It certainly is. I tried my hardest to find a clip that would do the song justice and this was the only one I could find. Liz Frazer looked the part tho'.
The Blacksmith and The Toffeemaker is on the cd The Best of Jake Thackray. If you want the chords and lyrics there is a superb Jake Thackray fan site. Just Google jakethackray because this won't let me put the link on.
Fantastic! I've just learnt to play this, but hearing the man himself do it live is something else. What a songwriter. Thanks for posting this, great stuff.
he was terrific when he was a bit naughty, pity he isnt still with us, nobody like him nowadays, such lyrics and that twinkly face and good voice. Wish we had vid of the lodger.
I once saw in the Radio Times the following film and description: CONFESSIONS OF A WINDOW CLEANER. Robing Askwith grins and bares it.

RIP Jake, so privileged to have met this shy and humble man after a show in the late 70's. Pure genius!

This country has produced the two cleverest wordsmiths the world has ever seen - William Shakespeare and Jake Thackray.

Even though it is thought that Shakespeare didn't write the plays.....
Don't forget Vivian Stanshall.

Jake was an absolute legend and a true gentleman.
His naughty boy sense of humour and use of words made him a national treasure.
I was fortunate enough to see him before his sad passing and will never, ever forget him.
Thanks for the wonderful memories Jake.
May your music and your memory live forever.
