You seem to miss the stick flexing as he's pushing the blade into him.
The pads are designed to stop a 6oz puck with an inch-thick edge, not a stick blade being shoved into the protector's gaps with 190-200lbs behind it.
You might have also noticed Osgood's amazing ability to slide backwards on the ice from the butterfly position - oh wait, that's not possible, so it must have been Talbot "hardly hitting him" that moved 200lbs of goalie and equipment backward before Osgood dumped back.
