Fantastic video! I both agree and disagree with your description, I'm grateful for the Fushigi because it's introduced me to something awesome. But at the same time it's aggravating how they advertise it, I'm sure tons of kids think it's some magic floating ball. I feel the same way that I've played guitar for years, then guitar hero comes out and everyone thinks they're the best musician (although I do like the game). Anyway, great work, especially loving the flames, I'm a pyromaniac. (:
@sharkhead7854 I say it like this, Imagine only .001 percent of the world knew what painting was. Suddenly a company says "WE INVENTED PAINTING! You need OUR brush, and its the only brush, The instant you buy it you can paint like Da Vinci!"
@TheHaZMaTBand Of course, and it would be both good and bad, that it would introduce people to art but at the same time, mock it. Although I hate how they advertise the Fushigi (I don't even know if I even heard the words "contact juggling" in the instructional video) I love it because it got me into real contact juggling, not an interest in making a ball float.
@terrero912 well, most of the effects of contact juggling are thanks to Michael Moschen (who did the CJ in Labyrinth), though some aspects have been around for hundreds of years. I don't have a problem with someone sharing CJ. But I DO have a problem when they're doing it in a way that makes it look like their idea, or that makes people (like darkshadow) think its nothing but a trick ball that doesn't take thousands of hours of practice. It's fun, but its a LOT of time and work.
@darkshadow1035 No, they are not. They are acrylic contact juggling balls, and I've been doing this for years before the guy from tv had even seen what contact juggling is. For crying out loud, look at when this video was posted, idiot.... how could I make a video using a product that wasn't even in existence then? Think before you speak. Saves me the effort of responding to nonsense.
@bongobang77 Sure he does, because he was being one. A product that at the time of his comment had only been on the market for a few months, and he was claiming that I was using them for a video shot years ago. That, my friend, is stupidity. I wasn't angry, but if someone is going say something that is blatantly obvious they are clueless about, I'm going to call them on it. Especially if it is saying I am using a product of a company I advocate boycotting.
@bongobang77 But do I not have a right to be angry? I'm a performer who has been practicing this art for several years, dedicating thousands of hours to it. Performing has provided a portion of my income. Then comes a company that takes my art and says it's nothing but a trick ball that anyone can do. Now people pass me on the street, companies are no longer interested in having a "trick ball" at their corporate meetings. Then someone accuses me of using the product that has ruined my art?
@darkshadow1035 The art has been around alot longer than the few months commercials have been out. In the commercial people use the Fushigi and their own acrylic balls.
@TheGypsysHeart In the original edition of the commercial, they didn't even use Fushigi balls actually.... they used regular clear acrylics. Only later did they reshoot with the Fushigi balls. Rolling Thunder has a neat video montage that has clips of the original ad.
On another note, even the "Fushigi" style ball was not their idea, both the red-zone and the silver center were both first discussed on the contactjuggling[dot]org forums 5 years prior, in talks with Infinite Illusions.
I can definitely understand the frustration with the way Fushigi markets their product, especially with the obvious years of dedication you've put into this art. The commercial undoubtedly discounts the skill and dedication behind it. But looking on the positive side, putting it that much in the public eye will gain attention of many people, like me, who hadn't even heard of contact juggling before. Now I can't wait to start practicing and learning this and I can only thank that dumb commercial.
@620wolverine knowing how to play with fire. Fire CJ is VERY dangerous, since unlike most fire props, the flame is actually on your skin. It is NOT something ANYONE should EVER EVER EVER attempt without proper training. Keeping the sphere moving is the key, and keeping the flame above you, not going into the skin.
@tooflyable I've been at this for years before the guy who made that stupid tv commercial had ever HEARD of contact juggling. This promo was shot close to 2 years ago though... I've just been crazy busy, I'm planning on working up a new one soon, and I've got some footage on my camera still waiting to be edited, so stay tuned.
@GreenDotDress Theres a little shop in Salem mass called The Magic Parlor, not a juggling shop but the sell Acrylic balls which are used for contact juggling. They also sell really nice chrome balls as well. The Magic Parlor is at 213 Essex St Salem, MA 01970
@AlexxisPlata Yes, I actually sell them at the magic store I run in Branson MO, though if you're not near there, I mail them out also. The price ranges depending on the size and material. I use acrylic spheres, which are around $25 for the small ones, $60 for the big one you see here. There are practice stage balls for $10, and start up kits with dvd's and stuff for $25 or $45, depending if you want a stage ball or an acrylic. If you might be interested, let me know, I'll send more info.
Thanks! Got some new fire footage filmed, still waiting to hit the editor... but hopefully I'll get that out here soon. Blows this stuff away... Stay tuned! :)
i met ya at the same shop, back at the beginning of june, with the high school. saw some cool sphere stuff, the works. Any help with sphereplay would be much appreciated.
i met you at the magic/joke shoppe today with my cousins and grandma. you demonstrated some tricks for us and then showed us some sphere play. just thought i'd check out your videos; very good work. thanks again :)
I've been interested in Sphereplay for a wile now and I want to start learning. Are you still doing bookings? Also do you do Renaissance fairs? I know some people that may be interested in sponsoring you for "Pennsic" If your interested.
Thanks! Most of the multisphere is 2.75", but the last 4 ball pyramid is 3". I just treated myself to them for Christmas, so I'm not practiced enough with them yet for much more. The single sphere stuff is a 4".
smaller spheres are easier to learn with, mainly you just don't want something too light or it will fly off your fingers. I started with 65mm when learning multisphere and 80mm for single sphere. I've got an instructional in the works, but for now there's a lot of really good stuff already on here. I've got some linked on my page; Rich Shumaker's tutorial is the first one I ever saw, Brinechild also has some great stuff, TryOutToys is a great group, plus you can buy their dvd.
It reminds me of David bowie from the labyrinth. Lol your pretty amazing. And I just shared to my friends.
About 2000 of them lol.
