  • PART II: Why is it then, that as soon as we go into a developing country, suddenly students with no qualifications are able to make medically related decisions for the citixens of that country. Do their lives mean less to us? Are they less worthy of receiving medical treatment from only qualified individuals. We need to think about the ethics when making decisions about international volunteering.

  • @sf2fs as a student who went on a GMT trip, EVERYTHING that we do or say must go through a doctor who is on site and with us at all times. No patient goes unseen without a doctor's approval, including diagnosis, subscribing medicine, or even performing a dental procedure. On my trip with 25 students, there were 6-7 full time professional doctors with us (who volunteer their time), and 1 full time professional dentist (as there were only 3 dental students).

  • @sf2fs wow you are jumping to way too many conclusions. like Khoifish said, everything done by students is under the direct supervision of licensed physicians. Students do not make ANY decisions for patients. They provide the initial assessment & present to the doctors. The Dr. might question the student about possible diagnosis or forms of treatment, for the sake of student learning, but the final decision is always the physician's. Ethics are never forgotten, especially by a school like UCLA.

  • Are these premed students? This must have been an incredible experience. However, I would like to get someone's opinion on the ethics of GMT in general. In Canada, or the United States, students (without a medical or dental degree) would never have the opportunity to make medically related decisions for another citizen. We have rules and regulations to ensure the safety patients and to ensure that patients only receive medical treatment from those with adequate qualifications and training.
