@shuan44 Radmin consists of 2 modules - Radmin Server and Radmin Viewer. Radmin Viewer needs to be installed on the local computer (for example your home PC or notebook) which you want to use to access your remote computer. Radmin Server needs to be installed on the remote computer (for example your office PC) which you want to access from your own one.

Is Radmin's own connection encryption strong enough to use over the internet? Or do I really need to set up a VPN if I want to help my Mom with computer remotely via Radmin?

@swirnoff You need to set up VPN if you connect over the Internet. If you connect in LAN it is not necessary. But it is not a question of security.

As for encryption it is advanced 256-Bit AES strong encryption of all data streams plus other features (look at Radmin site). So nobody will be ever able to decrypt transmitted information.

My mom's computer is behind multiple firewalls/routers on her school wifi. Is it possible to set up vpn (for using radmin pver the net) without calling up campus admins and beg them to forward ports?

@brainiacxx If you use "No tray icon version", the user at remote PC won't see. Radmin server icon at remote PC turns red when Radmin is working.

Yes, you need to install the server version in your friend's computer and also set a user name and password and to know your friend ip address. I use the Radmin server 2.2 and the Viewer 3.2. This programe is wonderful and easy to use.

yes, as long as you setup port forwarding correctly in the router. but if i understand what you're saying you don't need to do even that. if you want to connect to another computer on your LAN then you need to use the local IP, not the public (internet IP).

here's your LAN (home network): 192.168.1.0 /24 (255.255.255.0)

your router is normally 192.168.1.1

the computers on your LAN usually start at a specific range, like 100. so your computer (hypothetically) would be 192.168.1.100. if you wanted to connect to that computer from another in your LAN, you would use that IP.

Your Can set up A VPN (Virtual Private Network). Just Google It!

You don't need to setup a VPN for it to work across the net unless you're using a cracked version, otherwise it should be good.

I recommend setting up a DNS! Much easier to remember than an IP. :D

couldn't get this to work, there were connection issues. simply tried connecting to a laptop on my LAN using a username and password combo, with auto-connect on timeout (10 sec) and i even opened the 4899 port on the remote firewall, PLUS made sure the program was allowed as well; nothing worked.

anybody got some tips or a better program?

It works though i've used it for years and still i like the program it's easiër then other programs, I think :D

But if it doesnt try a little bit harder :) i'm sure it will work ;)

and if i have dynamic IP or the computer that i wish to control is shut down... how do i connect in those situations ? without someone being near it to ask him/her to start it....

You need a static IP only on Radmin Server side. If you computer supports Wake-On-LAN option (check in BIOS) you can turn it on remotely but only within your LAN. At the moment there is not a single software that can turn PC on if it's turned off.

I do prefer to leave my PC turned on. I've set a "Reboot on Power loss" option in BIOS. PS: Radmin 4.0 will be supporting dynamic IPs. The release is planned for the Q4 2008 - Q1 2009.
