This guy is the real deal.Don't believe the stereotype that Japanese pitchers can't cut it in the US.Hes 6 foot 5,220 lbs and is obssesed with his craft. He has large hands so transition to American sized baseball will not be a big deal
The Rangers' scouts and Nolan Ryan have been stalking Darvish for over a year, getting to know him personally, and they watched 20 of his starts.Ryan and GM Daniels are some of the smartest guys in the Major leagues
@ismokeot420420 Maybe... remember you are looking at just the punchout. There's no telling what the sequence was before. Yes, NPB is somewhere in skill level between AA and the Majors, but these are pros just the same.
Wow... that's a lot of batters looking helpless. The problem with Japanese pitchers coming to MLB is that they don't have a strike zone that is "as forgiving" and there are a lot more power hitters. It would be a pleasure to see Darvish making Cano, Granderson, and Texeira look that silly, but I'm not counting on it just yet.
@Loeher That I can totally believe. Considering that that $50 million or so is "up front" and thus relies on a team having loose cash, a team that has just gone to the World Series is a perfect candidate. The real cost is how much for how long? That remains to be seen with Darvish. Kid looks good on a mound, though.
@xristosdomini He has a very good delivery though, not gimmick-ish as some of his predecessors (Nomo, Daisuke). Japanese baseball is somewhere between (most say) AAA and MLB. The Rangers had scouts at every one of his games this year, and JD even made a trip himself. That's some dedicated scouting and it looks like it could pay huge dividends.
@archang0l Yeah, I watched his start against the Lions in the NPB playoffs. His delivery is really smooth, and I think the adjustment for the mound height will be pretty quick. Agreed that his delivery isn't gimmickish and that is one of the main reasons the investment in him by a big league club makes sense. For whatever reason, the NPB pitchers like some really odd windups...
@archang0l Also, the interesting thing with Darvish is that his movement to the plate seems to get smoother the deeper into the game he gets. In that sense, he already "has" a major league style delivery. It should be an interesting run up to Spring Training... and then to see what he's really got in the tank.
@Wyland42 Except you are also forgetting Hideo Nomo, Hideki Matsui (who was a viable MVP candidate not that long ago), Hiroki Kuroda, Tsyuoshi Nishioka and Takashi Saito. Right now Japanese players are a 50/50 gamble on whether they "make it" or not. One of the best Front Office crews in baseball thinks that Darvish is going to make it. There's reason for faith on this one.
hes very good but i think he will get injured in the majors. he does not follow through which put tremendous strain on the throwing arm. i think he will do great in the majors but at some point he will have a arm injury.
Dont say that why dont you wait to see what happens and i respect the hell out of Pujols he is a true killing machine but cant hit pitches that are placed and what do you know about being in the Major leagues maybe he sets up his pitches to look like a strike!
i really like what i see here...he needs an offspeed pitch besides that breaking ball. he will be taught that when he comes here by billy connors of the yankees.
however, those breaking balls 9 inches off the plate MLB hitters will not be swinging at. the japanese league is far inferior to MLB.
@joedoys He already throws 7 different pitches according to scouts. I agree that MLB hitters won't chase "as many" pitches as the NPB guys, but hitters aren't perfect anywhere. After two located fastballs, a late-break curve looks awfully tantalizing to the batter's eye. He will probably need refining... but not an overhaul.
he seems very animated fist pumping and jumping i love that energy out of the japanese players i know of he seems more animated and high energy i wonder if japanese people sorta hate on him but he would fit perfectly in the bigs he should come to sf giants that would be awesome
These are weaker hitters and with his delivery you can see the ball the whole way. He's good and and looks to have good command, but Pujols would take him yaaaard.
This guy could potentially have a lot of problems with his left leg. Many times in this video he brings his right leg to a dead stop rather than bringing it through. That rapidly brings all of his momentem down on that leg. Guys like Jake Peavy do the same thing and he ended up destorying his left ankle.
@SimpleStuff31 according to his pitching guidebook, the pitches he uses in game are 4 seam, 2 seam, 2 sliders, cutter, curve, splitter, change up, sinker, and fork. He also has a new pitch starting this year that he calls it 1 seam (but it's really a fast sinker). So if you can do the math, it's 11 pitches.
Also, he clocked 100mph on TV twice in WBC game when closing. One is proven to be an error on the radar gun, but the other is real deal. Even though he usually sits in mid 90s when he starts.
Filthy. Some of these umpires seem to have had a little bit of a big zone and definitely some of those pitches will not be called for strikes in the mlb. However, he's still a filthy pitcher, maybe the best in the world and he is not in the mlb. Really hope he comes to the mlb ASAP.
@bloodwitch0789 actually in japan the strike zone tends to be SMALLER. Often the whole ball needs to be inside the strike zone, and Japanese ballplayers often have a smaller body. More and more umpires has made the strike zone bigger in recent years though. Another reason can be that Darvish has expanded the strike zone, we only see the strike out pitch here. Not to mention that he probably can get away with stuff because he is so well respected.
@exiit Japanese strike zone is larger than US's due to the unclear definition of top of the strike zone (midpoint between the top of the batter's shoulders and the top of the uniform pants). Somehow they forgot the "top of the uniform pants"... That's why Fujikawa and Matsusaka in Japan throws a lot of shoulder area fastball and still able to strike batters out. It's not gonna work like it in US.
well i think he mentioned about spending his whole career in Japan... I see a lot of people who r underestimating Japanese pro baseball and assume that mlb is the best, but thats not necessarily true... it IS the best paying league...
and Im korean so i have no reason to go all goodygoody on jappro baseball... but darvish is definitely the first japanese b.player who i thought was cool... i was like "fuck" when he came out as the relief in the WBC finals.... fucking wicked slider...
@litojonny thats what happens when you are way ahead of the ball, your top hand comes off and you stick your butt out trying to reach for the pitch, in lefties case, they fall away from the plate after their swing.
I first heard of him 2 years ago. No doubt he has MLB stuff. He is nasty plain and simple. He's only 22 yrs old so he will have time to get even better . My guess is he comes over seas before his free agency in 2014 and quickly becomes a top pitcher here. His father has said he enjoys the New England weather and landscape and thinks Yu will too so look for the Red Sox and Yanks to battle on this one should be a nice pay day for him.
Well he looks good as soon he is done pitching minor league Japanese baseball, he can bring it to the majors and he can join the 3 elite japanese players ever - Iciro, Matsui, or uh um Nomo maybe. Lot of role players So Taguchi, Shinjo, Kaz matsui, Okajima (is good), Herb Mongo, hee sop choi (oops wrong country) Yao ming, Mac Suzuki, ---- ah and Cecil Fielder too
This is Darvish as of 2007-2008. This year he has filled out his frame pretty well. Darvish will not succeed in MLB because it'll be the same deal as Matsuzaka: the team that signs Darvish will have to reel him in in terms of pitch count and also MLB hitters are much more patient than NPB hitters.
Darvish won 16 games last year in 24 starts. He's 12-3 so far this year with a 1.31 ERA. Unless the Fighters (not Ham Fighters) offense fails him like it did last year at so many times, he'll win 20 this year easy.
Pitchers get a lot of no-decisions in Japan because their bullpens either blow leads or they get into a lot of pitcher's duels. 10 wins is a pretty reasonable plateau, but the real barometer of a pitcher's skill in Japan is 15 wins. Anywhere from 15-18 wins is usually good enough for the league title in wins. Keep in mind that Hisashi Iwakuma's 21-win season was the first time anybody had won that many since 1983, I think.
Sox paid 150 mil posting fee for Dice K and got an inconsistent pitcher in return. Yankees will only need to pay 50 million to Darvish and get a 25 year old ace. Get ready bitches.
His posting fee was 52 mil., not 150 mil. Also, the NHF suggest that Yu's will be higher than the 52 mil. for Daisuke. Also, Darvish has shown very little interest in playing in the majors so far. Overall the Yankees will have to pay somewhere around 100-120 mil. to get him signed to a long term deal. But they'll get him after his deal with the NHF runs out in 2012. They'll also be getting a slightly younger and much better pitcher than when the Bo Sox got Daisuke.
Ok, that makes more sense. 150 seems like a little bit much, lol. If Darvish decides to come over, then you're right. But, Darvish has shown little interest so far. He wants to show the kids in Japan that you can be successful and be a great player and still play in the NPB. Maybe if you're the best player, even. Money has a way of changing things though, so who knows. I kind of hope he stays in Japan personally. We've hurt Japanese baseball enough already.
It would be interesting to see how he could develop over here. He is way too skinny now, if he came to the US, they would suggest he gain a good 30 pounds which would add some more velocity. I think he could be better than strasburg.
What's up with the catcher setting up to the left and right before the pitch? He is not helping Darvish at all in pulling back the pitches back in the strike zone as well.
It would be cool to see this guy in the MLB, but he wants to stay in Japan. So, sorry Yankee fans, you got no "dice" with Matsuzaka, and you wont get Darvish either.
he is of course not dice k level yet or maybe ever. its tough to be dice k or to do what he did in japan and the olympics and wbc..and minor leagues for that matter! i think darvish would have a hard time adjusting to major league hitters, more of a hard time then dice k in his first year. only because darvish throws basically fastball slider combo..
Darvish certainly has the stuff. He just needs to mature. The Korea games in the WBC told all, as soon as he got in any kind of trouble, he caved. He needs to be able to battle, which can be psychologically challenging for someone who is used to being so dominant. Dice-K battles that to a degree to this day.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
because japanese people are ashamed of their past. and they won't admit that a big portion of population is of korean descendant (and a lot of baseball players are of korean heritage too - ogasawara michihiro for example) they should learn from the germans, that is admit their natural brutality
Iwakuma has better command of his pitches but Darvish has the edge when it comes to power. Both of them did well today especially Iwakuma, he pitched 8 good innings.
As for the command of his breaking balls, I dunno. I'm guessing even Greg Maddux would have trouble keeping them in the strike zone if they break that hard. I mean, the movements in his breaking balls are sometimes just too vicious to control.
haha you got a point. Darvish got a nasty slider. I love the way he pounds the strike zone with a few fastballs then uses a slider to get them out. It's funny to see the batters swing the bat and catch nothing but air :D.
his curveball is preatty nasty, but he definitely hung some pitches that could be hit in the majors... i can't wait to see him come over to the US and pitch in the MLB... he definitely has some good stuff as well as some moxy...
I can't believe he doesn't want to play in MLB. He may not play well for first one or two years in MLB if he changes his mind, but w/o doubt he will dominate every inning he plays once he matures.
I think it would be cool to watch this guy play in the MLB but...he wants to stay in Japan because he wants to represent his country and have the young children of Japan look up to him. Those were his exact words on why he don't want to come to the U.S...but yeah this guy is just flat out nasty.
I do think he will change his mind once a title contending mlb team offers him 10+mil/yr for 5+ yrs w/ high guarantee money. I did hear what he had said from espn, but he is still young n there are plenty of time for him to change his mind. Waiting is better though. i don't want to see him come into mlb n struggle too much that he may want to move back. u saw what koreans did to him in first inning, imagine what big hitters can do in early innings against him right now in mlb.
And I hope he does because I like watching this particular Japanese pitcher for some reason. And yes I did see what the Koreans did to him in the first inning. I just think he needs to mature a little more..and once he does I DO hope he comes to the US. =]
Yeah. Guy hasn't reached his peak yet and its better for Japanese baseball this way since most of their promising young stars like Dice-K keep hopping over the pond. I bet even closer to 30 he's still good enough and more mature to handle the MLB.
I beg to differ. Iwakuma had better W-L and ERA, but on raw stuff, i'd give Darvish the edge. Is their a way to obtain peripherals (e.g. K/9, BB/(, K/BB, etc.) on Japanese pitchers?
Hey you non educated fool. I'm half Japanese and half white. The same as Yu Darvish(yes, Iranian is white) There is no Japanese "race". Japan is a country made up of 3 ethnic groups. Yamato people, Ainu people, and Ryukyuans. Anyway, the Japanese dont call people of mixed race, mixed. They are referred to as half. Halves and are quite a unique group of people and often admired. Especially in the media. So don't ask stupd questions, "is he accepted" what do you think? the guy's a superstar

They'll also be getting a slightly younger and much better pitcher than when the Bo Sox got Daisuke.
will19726 2 years ago
My bad that 150 mil was a typo. What I'm trying to say is Sox and Yanks pay the same but Yanks will get the better pitcher.
SolarSansGamer 2 years ago
Ok, that makes more sense. 150 seems like a little bit much, lol. If Darvish decides to come over, then you're right. But, Darvish has shown little interest so far. He wants to show the kids in Japan that you can be successful and be a great player and still play in the NPB. Maybe if you're the best player, even. Money has a way of changing things though, so who knows. I kind of hope he stays in Japan personally. We've hurt Japanese baseball enough already.
will19726 2 years ago
It would be interesting to see how he could develop over here. He is way too skinny now, if he came to the US, they would suggest he gain a good 30 pounds which would add some more velocity. I think he could be better than strasburg.
will19726 2 years ago
What's up with the catcher setting up to the left and right before the pitch? He is not helping Darvish at all in pulling back the pitches back in the strike zone as well.
adam250979 2 years ago
It would be cool to see this guy in the MLB, but he wants to stay in Japan. So, sorry Yankee fans, you got no "dice" with Matsuzaka, and you wont get Darvish either.

he is of course not dice k level yet or maybe ever. its tough to be dice k or to do what he did in japan and the olympics and wbc..and minor leagues for that matter! i think darvish would have a hard time adjusting to major league hitters, more of a hard time then dice k in his first year. only because darvish throws basically fastball slider combo..
PoliticsAddict 2 years ago
Darvish certainly has the stuff. He just needs to mature. The Korea games in the WBC told all, as soon as he got in any kind of trouble, he caved. He needs to be able to battle, which can be psychologically challenging for someone who is used to being so dominant. Dice-K battles that to a degree to this day.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
because japanese people are ashamed of their past. and they won't admit that a big portion of population is of korean descendant (and a lot of baseball players are of korean heritage too - ogasawara michihiro for example) they should learn from the germans, that is admit their natural brutality

this guy has deadly 2-seam fastball!!!!!!!

iwakuma is the king of sinkers. darvish rarely throws any 2 seam fastballs (sinkers). he throws 94 mph+ four seams.

darvish is the man
chu6466 2 years ago
Iwakuma has better command of his pitches but Darvish has the edge when it comes to power. Both of them did well today especially Iwakuma, he pitched 8 good innings.
Longlebao 2 years ago 3
Darvish has a very good command of his fastball.
As for the command of his breaking balls, I dunno. I'm guessing even Greg Maddux would have trouble keeping them in the strike zone if they break that hard. I mean, the movements in his breaking balls are sometimes just too vicious to control.
ghoroumone 2 years ago
haha you got a point. Darvish got a nasty slider. I love the way he pounds the strike zone with a few fastballs then uses a slider to get them out. It's funny to see the batters swing the bat and catch nothing but air :D.
Longlebao 2 years ago
his curveball is preatty nasty, but he definitely hung some pitches that could be hit in the majors... i can't wait to see him come over to the US and pitch in the MLB... he definitely has some good stuff as well as some moxy...
tblazerwallace30 2 years ago
his deadly weapon is his slider.

I can't believe he doesn't want to play in MLB. He may not play well for first one or two years in MLB if he changes his mind, but w/o doubt he will dominate every inning he plays once he matures.
edhwanrhee84 2 years ago
I think it would be cool to watch this guy play in the MLB but...he wants to stay in Japan because he wants to represent his country and have the young children of Japan look up to him. Those were his exact words on why he don't want to come to the U.S...but yeah this guy is just flat out nasty.
RBforWTnumber26 2 years ago
I do think he will change his mind once a title contending mlb team offers him 10+mil/yr for 5+ yrs w/ high guarantee money. I did hear what he had said from espn, but he is still young n there are plenty of time for him to change his mind. Waiting is better though. i don't want to see him come into mlb n struggle too much that he may want to move back. u saw what koreans did to him in first inning, imagine what big hitters can do in early innings against him right now in mlb.
edhwanrhee84 2 years ago
He probably will end up changing his mind.
And I hope he does because I like watching this particular Japanese pitcher for some reason. And yes I did see what the Koreans did to him in the first inning. I just think he needs to mature a little more..and once he does I DO hope he comes to the US. =]
RBforWTnumber26 2 years ago
Yeah. Guy hasn't reached his peak yet and its better for Japanese baseball this way since most of their promising young stars like Dice-K keep hopping over the pond. I bet even closer to 30 he's still good enough and more mature to handle the MLB.
newagepun 2 years ago
This dude is nasty, His stuff is more nasty than Dice K. If he was in the states he would win at least 3 Cy Youngs or more.

iwakuma
vengala2000 2 years ago
