I don't think that this song is a particularly political one, I believe it to be a statement about the nature of human beings. We have the compacity for great things. Constructive, life-saving, creative. We are more concerned with developing weapons than solving problems like poverty, hunger. We would rather be feared than respected. Thats not a political statement that's a human nature thing.
guys, to me, i'm not an EXACT supporter of Obama but I do support some of his views and actions, for example, he's not exactly creating more debt for the people, my opinion, the reason he's pulling troups out is because of military funds and profit going into Manpower rather than Medicaid for example, there's so muuuuch money going into military force that we have much more debt in our hands of bankruptcy... out of room, he's kind of going opposite of Bush's plan, he was, in my opinion,a dumbass
Here ya go, here's an even better "translation" of the meaning to this song.. no offense WrAth2110, as I love your video and your point of view... I'm going to have to say that the annotations describing their view in this original version of "Handlebars" is by far the closest that even the members of Flobots would agree with... we live in a corporate reality my friends...watch?v=834-D_ZLXTg and then watch this one too... watch?v=gpIwKemAilw ... open your eyes, research your history....please.
Thanks for that. The videos were pretty good, especially the first one simply because of the dove connection he discovered.
Although, those videos were very literal in there interpretation and honestly I'm amazed that not everyone sees that raw interpretation after watching the original video once.
Not sure what history has to do with the song either. In fact I think it has nothing to do with it.
since i didn't have enough room, let me continue here.... being politically engaged can also mean being a dissenting voice.... somebody who's not liking where the government is heading or doing to their citizens, Like Obama for instance, he's a liar..everything he said he was going to do before he was elected, he's doing just the opposite, he's only expanding Bush's policy's and creating more debt for the people..damn, out of room again...YES, HISTORY... watch this one... watch?v=m_boAGNPmNQ
hmmm, ok while I agree that this song can be interpreted as "Human Potential"..I find it a little ignorant to say that this song is anything BUT political..The Flobots are EXTREMELY political..they've even stated their musical influences to be in the likes of "DeAd Prez" and "Immortal Technique",and If you watch the original video to this song ,watch?v=V1rJTu372K0 , and you really pay attention to the message, you'll understand the meaning is quite more political then anything. READ THEIR LYRICS
political? Not sure if you're using the correct word.
I don't see any aims towards a political party or political figure. Some say it is an attack of Bush, I completely disagree because there are no direct connections.
The song is really, in it's simplest form, meant to point out the potential of a person to become a certain way (one becomes involved in business/politics and is power hungry while the other is content with an average life). Also, it points out that power can consume good ppl.
LOL, YES, political... Politics doesn't just stop at a certain "party" or individual, Politics is the entire process of people making decisions for the rest of their people.... but when the corporate world TAKES OVER, (which it obviously has) then we all become an expendable consuming product...it's really quite simple once you're aware of how things really work, I'll leave you with a couple videos... watch?v=gLBE5QAYXp8 ... and this is a flobots interview, watch?v=Bxo_WQPnBCw, there's 2 parts!
its a political song, its a personification of america and how its become so powerful; with great power comes great responsibility, you can do anything you want but you need to know what you should and shouldn't do.
the growth of humanity cause humanity is growing really fast but we hardly ever think about the consequences of our actions and I think this song represents that because at the end of the official video the guy ends up killing his friend cause he's been blinded by power.
I'm normally not one for vids, but you really captured how I interpreted the song. I love how everything just snowballs.... Thanks for putting it together.
I believe it's about the growth of civilization & man. You start out with something simple that you're proud of, like "riding a bike with no handlebars" and you expand on that. You become so successful and powerful, that it leads to your downfall. And then you have to start over "riding your bike with no handlebars".
...and in the end he destroys humanity and they are now dead and back in the same place, riding their bikes with no handlebars, realizing what happened.
i think there are many reasons to this song but yours could be one of them.... look at the begining, two guys going "cool i can ride my bike with no handlebars man!" they're happy for the simplest of things in life... which later turns into one guy staying that way, and the other guy becoming a big shot, splitting atoms {(atom bombs)-war/kiling}... the bird killing the other bird... he can basicaly do what he wants because he decides what is right and wrong for everyone under his rule...
That was really deep, especially at the end. The quick transition between the pile of corpses and the baby riding the bike with no handlebars. Nice Job!
you're halfway there with the good evil thing ....you obviously have not listened to the rest of their album... they could care less about the foolish stories of the bible ...... the whole album is an indicment of our current administration...G-bay, katrina, the war, government back assasinations, and especially any racist white southerners.... there is one song about being ashamed of going to church and learning that they are hypocrites when it comes to race...anne braden if you are educated
"The lyrics came to me as I was riding a bike home from work with my hands in the air.... and I felt triumphant, but at the same time, I knew there were people at that moment who were being bombed by our own country. And I thought that was incredibly powerful. We have these little moments of creativity, these bursts of innovation, and every time that happens, that innovation is used to oppress and destroy people. So it struck me as beautiful and tragic at the same time." ~MC Jonny 5~
I really like your video. I agree with you on most of the what you had. I also like your ending picture for the video, I feel that revealed a great deal about the song.
Two friends diverge, they make two different choices. That is the "smaller" message behind the song.
The larger message is that 1: Humans have potential to do both good and evil, and 2: The world is becoming smaller due to communication, transportation, etc..
You have to look deep man, not just skim the surface and say, "I got it!"
i love this. I hate it how people just judge it and say this song is retarded because hes singing about riding bikes. hes not. and i love how someone else gets it besides me. this song makes me cry.

I think Obama is doing a good job of trying to keep down the deficit, given the banking situation.
