for the people who said this game was won by the better team are wrong, i played on the 06 and 07 team and started both years, We had the saints run down in the the 3rd and 4th quarter, bettendorfs condition is far superior to anyone else in iowa. we were moving the ball the whole way down the field and because of one missed key block the running back dropped it because of a lucky outside blitz. even when we got the ball back we were able to move the ball, but the refs gave us two bad calls

Although I'm impartial to either team, since i go to Iowa City West, I would have to say that Xavier is the better team. Not by far, but you can tell by watching team highlight tapes that Xavier was always the most athletic, hardest playing team on the field. They won because they forced teams to play at their speed.

Given that the talent level of Iowa high school football can never truly compete against the bigger states, I'd say that Tavian Bank-led Bettendorf team definitely accomplished something.

It was pretty unbelievable. Xavier earned their state title. This game was the real state title. But I saw both teams play -- and this Bettendorf team was better. They just gave up the game when it was on the line. As far as catching the kid: Well, who'd going to? Only RBs and WRs. WRs are too far down field and the RB just fumbled and fell to the ground. I don't think speed had much to do with it. That kid just picked it up and ran his slow ass as fast as he could.
It is still impressive to go undefeated against schools that are routinely twice your size in many if not all occasions (bettendorf included). But considering we're not even out of the same academic year, I think it's fair to flaunt it maybe a little still - I know I understand when I see others do it. 2006 belongs to Xavier, hands down...that's my point and I beg your pardon for saying so - respect was paid to you, respect paid to Xavier, so what's the big deal?

Bettendorf was the best team that Xavier played in 2006...better than SE Polk, and probably the second best team in the state, you may be a regular customer at the state tournament, no one ever took that away, you may have one of the best programs in the state - ranked among the Valley's, Dowling's, etc...but you only get to the top by beating the best...2006 was Xavier's year and they took it.

But Ice, come on man, the roughing the kicker call was in completely right. Schulte did not, from my vantage point, tip the ball at all. The kicker simply left the kick short (the spin was normal, if Schulte had got a hand on it the ball's spin would have been altered) and was crushed by Schulte, good call, and bad play by Xavier.
Glad I finally found this on YouTube, I've heard it had been up for a while.
1. Xavier was more hungry - they were the ones who got in the backfield, hit the back hard enough to force the fumble, had the athletic ability to GET THE JOB DONE 96 yards later.
2. Bettendorf shouldn't have been down there anyway. The only reason they were that close was due to a pathetic PHANTOM personal foul call on a field goal...you know it's true. Xavier will take the win despite the Bettendorf-friendly officiating crew.

I dont know if you realize but this was a football game. Basketball doesnt mean anything. And you say you almost beat Xavier, well you didnt. Get over it. Bettendorf and SE Polk had like triple the kids we had and we beat both of them. Sorry kid.

4. As for the comment that had excuses why no one could catch #10 there was one WR and 3 RBs and it was on the goal line, the WR took like 3 steps to block so your downfield theory is gone. What is he gonna run a 40 yard post on the 3 yard line? and it is funny how on the video there are 5 xavier players near the goaline when 10 crosses. Maybe bett should of hustled more since they allegedly outworked Xavier every play. I think the results speak for itself on that one.

1. If Bett was as good as they claim they would have controlled the game the whole way and dominated, not let it come down to one play. Xavier capitalized
2. This isnt the NBA. there is no seven game series so whoever keeps saying play Bett 2 or 3 times and see what happens can stop. Xavier and Bett played one time and Xavier won. End of story. And by the way, Xavier was 13-0 Bett was 10-2 losing twice with one of those teams being??? oh yea XAVIER.

Oh come on. Bettendorf was in no way, "way better" than Xavier. They were two basically evenly matched teams and XAVIER WON. Simple as that.

It was pretty unbelievable. Xavier earned their state title. This game was the real state title. But I saw both teams play -- and this Bettendorf team was better. They just gave up the game when it was on the line. As far as catching the kid: Well, who'd going to? Only RBs and WRs. WRs are too far down field and the RB just fumbled and fell to the ground. I don't think speed had much to do with it. That kid just picked it up and ran his slow ass as fast as he could.

It is still impressive to go undefeated against schools that are routinely twice your size in many if not all occasions (bettendorf included). But considering we're not even out of the same academic year, I think it's fair to flaunt it maybe a little still - I know I understand when I see others do it. 2006 belongs to Xavier, hands down...that's my point and I beg your pardon for saying so - respect was paid to you, respect paid to Xavier, so what's the big deal?

Bad break for Bett fumbling at the goaline? Yes. Lucky that a Xavier d-lineman got in the backfield before the back got the handoff? Hardly. Lucky that a Xavier d-back ran it all the way back? Maybe lucky that might Bettendorf couldn't catch him despite having to make a cutback across the field...but I'll give Bettendorf the benefit of the doubt - he was just an athlete and finished.

Hey, psycho, too bad that "one game" was the semi final of the playoffs. Why don't you just win them all??? To say that Xavier didn't EARN RESPECT by going 13-0 is asinine, and that crap should be checked at the door. I respect the hell out of any team that makes it to state with regularity, but I certainly think it's a little bit insane to say Xavier didn't deserve their title. You get what you EARN - Xavier Saints, 2006 state champs.

I never said I didn't RESPECT Xavier, Xavier won the State Championship of course I Respect them. I would have to be a Jackass not to. But if you want to say that Xavier wanted it more than Bettendorf you're are going to have to win a few more games and prove yourselves again and again. You won the State Championship in 06', hooray, but that doesn't matter anymore you have to START WORKING FOR THE NEXT SEASON

Bettendorf was the best team that Xavier played in 2006...better than SE Polk, and probably the second best team in the state, you may be a regular customer at the state tournament, no one ever took that away, you may have one of the best programs in the state - ranked among the Valley's, Dowling's, etc...but you only get to the top by beating the best...2006 was Xavier's year and they took it.

You can live for next year, but this one belonged to Xavier. There is nothing lucky about working harder than the guy across from you on a given play...such as this one. Quite frankly, it's nice to see somebody get what they deserve for a change.

One of the top two plays I have ever seen in person.
But Ice, come on man, the roughing the kicker call was in completely right. Schulte did not, from my vantage point, tip the ball at all. The kicker simply left the kick short (the spin was normal, if Schulte had got a hand on it the ball's spin would have been altered) and was crushed by Schulte, good call, and bad play by Xavier.
Glad I finally found this on YouTube, I've heard it had been up for a while.

1. Xavier was more hungry - they were the ones who got in the backfield, hit the back hard enough to force the fumble, had the athletic ability to GET THE JOB DONE 96 yards later.
2. Bettendorf shouldn't have been down there anyway. The only reason they were that close was due to a pathetic PHANTOM personal foul call on a field goal...you know it's true. Xavier will take the win despite the Bettendorf-friendly officiating crew.
3. Good teams find a way to win. Bettendorf wasn't good enough.

Not to mention their high rankings in everything that they didn't end up winning, not to mention they've only been around since '98. Plays like this are why it's amazing that Bett has 6 titles. Not that they are lucky...no no. It's that they're are in the hunt every single year. When that's the case things like this are bound to happen. It's just a matter of time. But you know the Dogs will be back next year, there isn't any doubt about that. X on the other hand has lots and lots of shoes to fill. Congrats to X on a very well played game against two evenly matched teams imo.
