  • Greg Lake knew and understood great music when he infused this splendid composition into his wondrous Christmas song, "I Believe In Father Christmas." A Merry Christmas 2011 to the world!

  • @mickeymousebiker1 agreed! Love ELP and their own classical sounds!

  • @DrunkintheAfternoon Those guys (ELP) were and remain pure genius! I loved ELP's version of Rodeo, by Aaron Copland.

  • Lieutenant Kije written by Greg Lake.

I'd almost swap my entire Bon Jovi collection for that song.

    Brad, USA

  • I've been searching for the chord progression for this and can't find anything other than sheet music I have to pay for. I don't want the sheet music, just the chord progression, because I'm transcribing it for guitar. Could someone help me?

  • I would like to hear Prokofiev done by Rammstein.

I've posted comments on the other front, too. So stuff from there might be heading this way.

I think I said "I would like to hear Rammstein do Prokofiev."

  • beautiful.

  • yuk! no human=no soul. sorry--just how it is.

  • @omgitsthecullens2 Keep in mind, we didn't do as many key changes as they did and we only repeated it twice, not three times. Btw, it's Ryan, the first chair sax.

  • @Yoyobean5 Ryann? the 7th grader?

  • @omgitsthecullens2 Yup. That's me.

  • This sounds like christmas?! Good job music ;)

  • Not as good as Greg Lake's original.

    ; )

  • @PhunkyNun Troika came before greg lake's song...

  • @WeeTubaGirl

I know that, hence the wink.

  • This song is part of a wonderful Christmas Carol called "I beleive in Father Christmas" by Greg Lake that was done in 1975!!!!

And it was also used in a film by Woody Allen called "Love & Death"

  • If you want, I can put one up. Played by advance group of a High School

  • better than other ones

  • Who keeps posting synthesized pieces!!??? Check out a real orchestra sometime!

  • @fiddlrs3

    yeah ikr

the clarinet's awkward trills don't sound awkward at all :/

  • Keith Emerson rips off another Composer and doesnt give credit...Shameless

  • when i hear this song i fell emperial i fell it in the back of my neck i fell like a king looking his masses from above

  • Troika means 'ride of the sleigh' or 'sleigh ride' so it does have some relevance to the English concept of Christmas, but in Russia you can sleigh-ride all year round, and it's a fantastic piece :D it's a shame the original film was lost...

  • duh dah dah dah daah dah duh dah duh dah

  • I play this song in my school band it's nice.

  • i played this for honors band. we did ok.

  • its not even a real Christmas song actually

  • I remember playing this song in my winter concert!

it was the #1 of the night!

  • I dislike those cheesy MIDI sounds. Bad!

  • Although, for traditional Russian music, it kind of works.

  • Hey, its from Woody Allen's "Love & Death"!!! one of my favorite films of all time

  • @eyalgot Actually, Woody Allen borrowed it from Prokofiev, who wrote it for a Russian film, "Lieutenant Kije" in 1934.

  • This has always been my Christmas song, transports me(on a Troika !!) back to my wonderful childhood when I first heard it.Fantastic.

  • Starts off like five tom cats in a sack! Stick with it.... Brilliant!

    Philistine who said that??

  • Superb comment!

  • This always reminds me of beautiful Ukranian girls in their thick fur jackets with red frostbitten cheaks.

  • awsome puts u in the mood for xmas i hope it snows

  • i had to play this for my chirstmas concert and it was kinda hard considering i play the bass clarinet

  • On noteworthy composer is it a .midi file or .nwc? if it is .midi link it to me somehow

  • Emerson, Lake and Palmer incorporated this piece into their Christmas song. Old but not forgotten.

  • Actually,it was Greg Lake on his own!

  • This is a great song even not at christmas time.

  • coooool! never heard this played by a church organ before!

  • haha organ? its played on a keyboard!

  • Haven't heard it in the raw until you've heard it played by The Mystic Knights Of The Oingo Boingo.

  • Oh, wow. I love this! I first heard it on a stereo in a school assembly as a small boy and I loved it then too, but I bet all the other kids would have laughed if I'd told them I liked it. I kept it to myself. At least I was smart enough then to do that. Shows I had great taste even then!! It was playing just before we broke up for Christmas too, (I believed all that crap then), and it inspires a sense of wonder in me now. Classic fantastic!!

  • What do you mean you believed 'all that crap then'? What did you believe? (: me = nosy

  • i played this at my christmas concert it was easy, cause i play tuba

  • we're playing this at my honors band concert today! I'm so nervous

  • are you by any chance in the North District honors band, caus i' was playing this too....kinda wierd.

  • seriously? Yeah!!! Whoa this is weird... I was 14th chair for flute. the chinese girl...

  • Nice sounding version. Prokofiev's gift for melody was really astounding - Ltn Kije, Romeo & Juliet, Peter and the Wolf, the Classical Symphony, Cinderella etc etc

  • @pljms Don't forget Alexander Nevsky

  • we sightread this at mpa, and it was so pretty i had to find it again. the director was like "this is sleigh ride music. literally, it's about riding a sleigh."

  • this was done on a keyboard or some computer programme. how disappointing. the horn sounds terrible...

  • listen on

  • musica ispirata, grazie da una veneziana

  • this piece cracks me up!

  • Man...I have the hard-ish part too... 2nd violin has DA DD DA DD DA DD DA DD DA DD DA DD DA DD DA DD DD DA DA DA DD DA DD DA DBb DC DC ----------------- real fast 4 times and 2 difficult Solis (solo for whole section) with 16th notes places around them.. buts its my favorite song my orchestra's playing this year.

  • i play 2nd too

  • AND GREG LAKE PUT WORDS TO IT

  • my band class is playing this song for our winter band concert

  • my high school band plays the whole thing

  • i'm playing this on the oboe. MY teacher calls it crap, that has been toned down for a middle school band. I kinda agree. All we have is F B F B F B F B F B F B F B F. Cool tune, but easily played.

  • We're playing this too. I have Clarinet. It's fun 8D

  • Me too, but violin here, heh..

  • :( Our director decided not to play it in the Winter Concert.. He said it was 'too hard'. IT'S EASY, FER CRYIN' OUT LOUD!

    Our band is layzeh..

  • depends on yurr instrument

    wutt is it?

  • Clarinet, First Part.

  • ahaha all the clarinets at me school say izz so ez

i have flute which is kinda hard

  • Just played this movement in the little community band I joined. I think we are playing it at about half this speed. :)

  • My orchestra are performing this in a few weeks. We don't sound half bad really

Is is just this recording, or is the tune in the first half quite drowned out?

  • "Nice" MIDI :P

  • this sounds inredibly cheap... and to Gribbles87, how is this movement difficult? i would say it's one of the easier of troika's movements, that is to say, on the cello. regards.

  • For fuck's sake this is not a song!!!! This is a movement. A movement!!!!! Fourth movement called Troika from Lieutenant Kije suite. Learn something!

  • this song is pretty fun to play, especially while marching haha

  • Geez, i cant even play it sitting down you haffa be like uber good to march with it O_O

    -bows down-

  • well its only the chorus part at like 0:30 were it sounds christmasy...it might be a simpler version lol

  • we [attempted] to sight read this in orchestra. it's a beautiful piece, but it'll require so much practice.

i'm not sure if some of my peers are up to it :/

  • wonderful piece, give it a few weeks it'll sound better than this!

  • learning it on the clarinet thanks so helpful it is really beautiful! x and yes to me it is just so Christmasy! can't wait God bless x

  • MIDI always sounds like cheap porn music. But I just can't figure ol' Kije there.

  • Its great. It gives you a great Christmas feel. Even though it isen't Christmas. I can only just play it on keyboard. Let alone sax:]

  • I like it too, but try it on sax. The cut time eighth notes are a total bitch to play, especially when you're trying to read each sharp in less than half a second :/ But I'd rather hear this in regular format instead of MIDI, MIDI software just gives it a kind of nasty feel.

  • I love this song, but its a bastard to play!
