All these years, I've heard Betty and Dupree mentioned in the lyrics of other songs, but this is the first time I've heard the original song that's about just them.
Chuck Willis did this classic in 1958 for Atlantic Records with the backing the Jesse Stone Orchestra and his is the only rendition to have ever made the charts - # 15 R&B/# 33 Hot 100. The flipside was My Crying Eyes. Great record for doing "the stroll" in those bygone days.
@AvidOldiesCollector you remember the stroll. you're aging yourself. ain't it great. i'm 65 and i taught my daughter to stroll, chalypso and jive. great music, great times
cdbpx I think Chuck's version is the absolute best. I might be a little predjudiced because his is the one we danced to back in 1963. Don't know when it was recorded.........
I seen him at the VFW probably about a year or so before he passed. He knew his music.

Keep up the good work!
I've tried to upload several Chuck Willis tunes but the copyright folks nail 'em every time. (I don't have him doing this song, though)

Yes, it is in a class all its own. This is one of my very favorite songs in the swamp pop category. I'm glad you enjoy.
