@EdBurminton You are misrepresenting my point. I am not arguing over musical taste. My problem with this performance is that Oldham is not playing the song with the intent of delivering *anything*. Well, one thing he was trying to deliver was himself, from having to play these songs over and over again. He did not intend to give his audience a good performance.
@EdBurminton There's no passion here. It's unmistakable. Dylan and Waits and no doubt a slew of other otherwise decent artists do bland performances like this all the time. Will Oldham failed here, as he no doubt did on dozens of discarded studio takes. Good songs are hard to perform.
This is a big deal only because snobs come in and say that especially the failed versions are good.
No, it's passionless and bland. There's nothing "charming" (or whatever the hell it is the shiny happy people in colorful clothes call it these days) about depression. Writing it all off as "teen angst" is condescending and harmful.
Maybe Oldham has been saved from his darkness and become a jolly joyful blind man like the rest of them. There's nothing admirable about that.
Maybe he shouldn't be singing this song if he isn't even willing to get into its mood.
Yeah. He should be one dimensional in his emotional range. Johnny One-Note.
He should also sing the songs the exact way they were on his album of ten years ago to appease all those who hate change and growth.
Jolly joyful blind fucks be damned. You fucks have nothing to give the world. Might as well buy a house in the suburbs and drive an Escalade and go for ice cream after the baseball game with the kids. That's what Will Oldham is now. Worthless, old and boring.
Actually if he was one dimensional in his emotional range in this performance, that would at least be something. Instead, there's no emotion in sight.
If you like to listen to this kind of wink-wink "I don't really mean any of this" performance, that's fine. But don't go saying it's some kind of artistic vision of "reinvention" or whatever.
Maybe you should check out some videos of Dylan performing live. Same shit.
I agree, this is the best performance of this song I've heard. It's not a song about depression that merits some sort of self-loathing performance. The song's about seeing a way beyond depression from the lowest vantage point. And Oldham was *feeling* it that day.
Someone please rotate this...

No, probably the best version of this great song. He added a time worn joy and reverence to this. He's grown up a little. Nice, nice work.
