We're recording the good doctor right now in the studio. Extremely nice fellow, and as has been stated here already a seriously talented songwriter and musician. The previous recordings we made with him was in Aug 2009.
I'm hoping he stops in with us every time he's on the west-coast of Canada.
Eugene is a wonderfully brilliant madman. I had the pleasure to play with him a couple years ago and I'll never forget it. He is amazing and is absolutely in the Yoda class of improvisors. I love what he does.

I agree with Oddbank. Eugene is a wonderful man and a very accomplished musician. We recorded him a bit in the studio and we recorded his show earlier this week.
He knows a lot about life, music and good food, so he's pretty good in my books.
One thing that I learned hanging out/playing with/listening to Eugene Chadbourne is that he's a classic troubadorian, story-telling, entertainer. Anyone can appreciate his music unless you are a snob, then maybe you'll dig some stuff...
There's a good-sized "mad scientist" streak in him, too. Personally, I think Phil Ochs, Ben Franklin and Spike Jones' DNA were combined in a laboratory to form a baby that was then shown horror movies for 20 years and then given guitar lessons.
When he licks his finger to make the guitar squeak . . . that's pure magic . . . that's why people love this music 'cause people think to add that kinda thing . . . y'know it's not just about that squeak but the fact that that's on top of the rest of what was being played then, that's the genius of it
I love how people say that musicians like Eugene only play this music 'cause they can't play "real music" but you'll notice during the parts where he's playing the acoustic guitar around 10:23 his fingers are fast as fuck . . . he's a good guitarist no doubt he just likes to make sounds that match his personality and his sense of humor and expresses that sideways feeling he has when he wakes up in the mornings ;) . . .
DNA? Was he around No Wave to begin with? As much as No Wave is becoming the new flavor of the week it is still wonderful as far as "scenes" go . . . lol
who here plays music? i mean in a way that you dedicate night and day to it? i love this guys message about pushing the boundaries of sound but i don't like his criticism.. hes knocken a lot of ppl who believe in music theory. Music is no simple matter of randomly banging on things.. i bet if all music was exactly this type, People would be annoyed. I do like this guy to an extent but theres a point when you gotta say no to it.. with out the message its just noise..
Eugene is a good example of someone who learned all the rules before he broke them. Picasso could paint pictures as realistic as a photographs and was classically trained, but he chose to try something new and different.
Eugene Chadbourne is not a pioneer of this kind of music where rules are broken. So called avant garde and free jazz music was started by jazzists such as coleman, coltrane, dolphy...etc. And they did know the rules of jazz, this chadbourne is just a rockstar wannabe that didnt make it. I would like to see chadbourne playing over some chord changes in a jazz tune.
Obviously you haven't seen Eugene play Coltrane, Dolphy, Monk, Sun Ra, etc. As far as "rockstar wannabe", were you even paying attention to what he said in this interview?
you are right i havnt, that is not the point of my commnet. The point is he is in no way a pioner in this kind of music, and saying himself that he is a pioner or believing so is just selfish.
@japa1990 of course he can play over chord changes and stuff , just check his hellington band and other recordings, he can play monk tunes and charlie parker really good

This guy is a musical genius.

@aocidicoa I think the word genius is over used these days, but Eugene definitely qualifies. His stuff from 20 years ago is still ahead of it's time!

dczwcmmb 3 years ago
No, definitely not, Wesely was much larger and from Chicago, This guy was on the streets of Greensboro,NC.
I tried to interview Wesely Willis once, but his "handlers" wouldn't allow it. Too bad, he died a couple months after that.

I interviewed him for HOURS many years ago,he wouldn't stop talking(imagine that!) I wish my memory wasn't so shot, and I could remember more of it.
