no, just grab a paperclip and poke it into that hole on the top of your iPhone, the slot will come out and there's your SIM card sitting in the cradle. But you can't just go to T-Mobile or some other Phone Company to get a SIM card and use there service, you must Unlock your phone

You can't unlock a phone to verizon, it can't run on verizon's network, just ATT or T-Mobile's.

I read it somewhere recently that only up to firmware version 2.2 can be unlocked at this moment. Also i could be wrong but i don't think downgrading the firmware can be done once it's been upgraded to the newer version.

No, unfortunately not any network. The iPhone will only work on GSM networks, which use the SIM card technology. Pretty much every carrier worldwide, except for most American ones, operate on GSM. This being the case, the iPhone will not work on CDMA networks like Verizon or Sprint.

quick question. when i got my first gen iphone it had to be activated because my friends mom upgraded to the 3g. So, i have another friend who wants to get rid of his 3g (why?!?!?).. IF i were to buy it, he would have upgraded to a new phone, thus 'deactivating' the phone. With this, you can only do the 'plug in and charge" so how would you go about updating it to 2.2 to when all you can do is make emergency calls?

The phone will be deactivated after he ends his contract. You should be able to just use it and it wont have any service, unless you activate it.

yeah but once its deactivated, it should be just like the way my 2g was when it was deactivated. I could only make emergency calls. I was unable to use it like an ipod touch because it wasnt activated. I had to unlock ( i have tmobile so i had to anyway) but if i just wanted to use it like a touch, i'd have to unlock it anyway. so why is the 3g usable when its deactivated and the 2g isn't

Last thing I did way update itunes. Even though I was on 2.2 with 2.28 base band. Ofcourse that did it. So if you are haveing problems and have tried everything eles you might want to update threw itunes.
