These songs make me cry - they are sung with such passion you don't hear anymore. I'm 55 years young and it takes me back to the times when my nan used to play the piano in her front room and I would sit and watch all my relatives sing to these old songs - timeless!
its so good to know the youngsters are listening to great old music.....its certain to put them in a better frame of mind than most modern stuff!........like some old comedy!
I've heard several versions of this song, but most of them were the same. This one is a bit different. Can someone help me with finding the correct lyrics for this version? Do you know where I can pick this up for myself? Ebay?
Like Elvis I appreciate the fact that he introduced people to a style of singing. The difference is Jolson was the first white pop singer to imitate black singers without parody; with a certain reverence. The style and phrasing is a direct imitation however of Louis Armstrong, who invented this style of singing. A style which personalized and interpreted lyrics. Aside from being the true master here, Louis also changed jazz instrumentation as we know it. Jolson was just a popular pale copy.
Al Jolson was still, and will always be the Worlds greatest entertainer. People get enjoyment from his timeless recordings today 60 years after his death. Can you name any other performers I doubt it very much. everyone with taste just loves his music. thanks for posting.
Al Jolson was my idol when I was a young boy. We got our first television and I saw him performing. I used to get in front of the refrigerator and pretend I was Jolson on TV. I would get down with all the soul I could muster singing Swanee and Mammy! Thanks for this post.
Asa Yoelson, Al's real name was a fantastic entertainer - excellent singer & all round religious good guy. When the films The Al Jolson Story & Jolson Sings Again were such big hits, people started seeing Larry Parks (who played Al) as Al himself. Suddenly Parks was bigger than Al & boy did Al hate that. He did not want Parks to play him in Sings Again but the directors insisted upon it. Parks was later found guilty of modern day treason & extradited fron the U.S.A!....
@yingkbc He got blacklisted by the movie industry after admitting before the HUAC that he had been a member of the communist party. Where on earth did you get that he was found guilty of "modern day treason"? Or "extradited" from the US? (He wasn't tried for anything, much less found "guilty". And if you don't know what big words like "extradite" mean you may want to consider looking them up before you use them).
@yingkbc To which country was he extradited? And why did they request that he be extradited. You're confusing either "deport" and "extradite" or "exile" and "extradite". US law doesn't provide for citizens being exiled or deported, and unless you know of some country that wanted him in order to prosecute him for a crime committed there then he wasn't extradited either. The words are only "simple" when you use them without regard for their actual meaning.
@senatorclaghorn If I am wrong in what I say then that is all that needed to be said by you. You did not have to resort to childish comments - which is why I replied back the way that I did. Let's just leave it at that!....
What a mellow voice he had when he was younger! One of the greatest influences in popular music of all time. Yes, gianinni2005, this should be heard by young people but I feel that there maybe a new generation who are looking back at music and learning how to play it again! Let us hope that the Internet can educate!
@raymonddavitt1990 Raymondo....you had a epiphany! Let the greatest singer of all time ring in your ears for ever!! (Let your Gran listen to Kylie Minogue and your Ma can bop to the Spice Girls)
My Dad was born in 1915 in St Louis Mo. He was a world traveler exposed to many musical cultures....His favorite singer was Al Jolson. I grew up in the 50's & 60's listning to his music on the old '78's'. I am now in my fifty's and need a Jolson fix at least once a week, or I go CRAZY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Born in 1951, I was introduced to this incredible voice of Al Jolson. Sadly, as years pass, so many of the younger generation lose out of listening to these fantastic vocals, mainly through lack of good musical education.

@gianinni2005 Hey man, if its any comfort to you I was born in 1990's and I love this music. Its better than any of the shit that they play now a days. Two of my favorite singers/guitarists are Memphis Minnie and Leadbelly. (I'm a classic rock junkie too, my favorite singers and musicians are the reason I got into old blues and jazz music.)
@gianinni2005 al jolson is an inspiration to me in my own journey to stardom, i will never give up when i have people like al jolson, patsy cline, johnny cash and more who walked before us and touched the world with their music and song.
@gianinni2005 I'm only 18, and I agree with you. The reason I found this song was because of a history project in school. I'd gladly listen to these "old songs" if they were on the radio! Anything is better then Lady Gaga shouting swear words and other things
This is Jolie, but maybe not the Jolson many remember from the recordings he made for the Jolson Story which he made when he was about 60. This recording was made when he was about 30 in 1913and in a somewhat different style. It is also possible that the quality of a recording made almost 100 years ago is flawed resulting in a sound perhaps slower than it should have been.

Just to say I'm a teenager. I listen mostly to this, and the "newest" music I listen to is from the early 70's. WHAT HAPPENED TO GOOD MUSIC?

I believe Louis Amstrong imitated Jolson's phrasing - Jolson recorded first c. 1911. Not saying Arnstrong isn't the true King of Jazz.
