Is there a fear of dust in the drive with the Bezel (faceplate) removed from the tray? I know the case has a retracting door, but it doesn't seem too offer much dust protection. I put a Lacie dvd burner in mine and it only slightly caught the case door with the faceplate on. I'm wondering if the philips screws (instead of the hex) would remedy that without having to take off the bezel? Or maybe trim the bezel down slightly at the top and bottom and put it back on?
@johnodd4 Sounds like one of two solutions will work for you. Either the drive bezel needs to be removed as shown at 3:21 in the video, or you've replaced a Sony optical drive with another brand of optical drive and the drive screws are not at the right height as shown at 2:29 in the video. The correct height screws can be found at Other World Computing (link in video description.)
@OWCmacsales Just bought a superdrive and a hard drive from OWC. Fantastic products, fast shipping with great video support. I would tell anyone to shy away from ebay in this market per say and go with OWC!
Great Video! just the kind of info i need for a do-it-ur self project. I rather do it my self than pay someone else who will end up over charging me. Much thanks for the free Help!!! (Used for Music, video & Graphics)
@owningnewbs The standard video card depends on the specific model of G5 that was purchased, but here's the list of cards the G5 could contain as stock:
Nvidia GeForce 6600, Nvidia GeForce 6600 LE, Nvidia GeForce 7800GT, Nvidia GeForce FX 5200 Ultra, ATI RADEON 9600, ATI RADEON 9600 Pro, ATI RADEON 9600 XT, ATI RADEON 9650
Jesus wentto go buy an optical drive for this .its a pioneer superdrive $89 they said some filing had to be done which would bounce it up to $179.00 ???
The optical drive is used to read and or write data from CDs, DVD, Blu-Ray discs, etc. Commonly referred to as a CD drive, DVD drive, Blu-Ray drive, Combo drive, or SuperDrive.

@ferjuca The PowerMac G5 models all use an Ultra ATA/100 optical drive, not a SATA optical drive.

Please get rid of the awful 80's hairband music intro.
GuildD695 1 year ago
@GuildD695 Rest assured, newer videos have abandoned the "80's hairband" intro.

@OWCmacsales would the ATI Radeon HD 5770 work on the g5
PearLDrummeR1871 1 year ago
@PearLDrummeR1871 The ATI Radeon HD 5770 requires a Mac Pro and OS X 10.6.4 or later - it is not compatible with the G5.

Hi Thanks for the Vid, But was this an IDE or SATA drive ?
Thanks again...
teejayandrade 1 year ago
@teejayandrade The PowerMac G5 uses an IDE optical drive.

@OWCmacsales Hi thanks for the reply...
My pioneer drive which I would like to upgrade
is listed under ATA in system profiler. Its a
Dual 2.5 G5. Would mine also be IDE although
under ATA ? Thanks.

thanks ..so ok now you showed us how to install it ..will you have to program it or something once you put it in there?
rockmeslowly79 2 years ago
No, the optical drive would be plug & play.
OWCmacsales 2 years ago
the Optical drive you just installed is that DL Burner?
rockmeslowly79 2 years ago
@rockmeslowly79 The drive we installed in the video is indeed a Dual Layer (DL) burner.
OWCmacsales 2 years ago
Hi i have 2004 G5 i cannot find out how to tell if it has a DL burner or single layer?
rockmeslowly79 2 years ago
@rockmeslowly79 The stock optical drive that came in the 2004 PowerMac G5 machines did not have Dual Layer (DL) burning capabilities.
OWCmacsales 2 years ago
installed the drive myself with the help of this awesome video. (took me longer than 20 minutes though)

can this optical drive be any drive. like the drive i want to change out was in a windows pc can that be done?
NYTESTOCKER 2 years ago
I believe so, I have that same exact drive in my PC and that's the one he used in the video, so most likely it can.
