The Salton Sea was formed in 1905 when massive flooding caused the Colorado River to break through an irrigation canal headwork and flow freely into the Salton Basin for 18 months. Since then, the Sea's existence has been maintained primarily by agricultural return flows from the Imperial, Coachella, and Mexicali Valleys.
The first time I was there was in 1985, I think. Right after our first visit, we started hearing about how the water was dangerous to swim in, but we didn't have any problems. When we went back later, we swam again. I'm really picky, but I thought it was beautiful. Very, very differerent but very beautiful. I hope to visit there either this spring or next fall.
i'm glad you still say how much you like the salton sea. And I"m happy that you swim in the water regardless of the negative hype. the sea isn't dangerous to swim in. and when i move there in 2 years, i will be so happy...because its always been a dream of mine to live there.
an Ass clown who lives North of Palm Springs in the mountains tried to tell me the sea was full of pollution from the river inflow. I never trust anyone who laughs at the end of every sentence like he needs be on medicaiton.
The level of pollution, I think, varies on the time of the year. I've heard accounts of several who've visited there. It was beautiful when I visited, but the water was HOT. Too hot for me to swim in...
I have recently become a visitor to Salton Sea for events such as, "Treasure Trails" and "Spook Run", which are annual off roading events. My interest in photography as well as geology make these trips especially rewarding. Most of the attendee know so few facts of the history or future of the sea, but now, after viewing this video and others similar, I can impart my knowledge to event goers to get many others interested in saving the sea. I invite you to view my video, "Salton Seascapes"
its not those on the registry that pose the greatest threat regardless of what the media and nancy bitch grace try to brainwash the public in to belieiving.
Well, that makes sense because it's always the predator we don't recognize who's the most dangerous. When I lived in the desert, I noticed that criminals on the run liked coming to desert areas to blend in. Probably the same idea...
This info on the earthquake activity offers one of the best arguments against the plan to split the Salton Sea with a huge and costly dike which would also, IMHO, ruin the beauty of the inland sea. The Sea needs to be protected from outside water predators who are diverting its inflows to support overdevelopment in nearby metropolitan areas. Secondly, it this terminal lake needs some kind of flushing activity. Thirdly, less talk and studies and more action. Very sad that CA is nearly broke.
i hope you guys come out with a way because it really is a nice place. if it is clean, it will be again a great tourist area, and it will be like Palm Springs. if it starts to be cleaned, im going to have to buy at least 20 more lots or acres b/c they will go up.
Where exactly is the San Andreas fault, because i live here in North Shore, next to Mecca.

We went there today and it's very beautiful, but it sure doesn't smell very nice.
We were at the North shore and there were a lot of cranes, egrets and pelicans. Lots of dead fish along the shoreline.

I understand that there is ground swell of registered sex offenders who are financially succesful and are secretly buying up lots.
Maybe they have what it takes to turn place around.
And make something special of a rotten eyesore

Jesus God, I hope that's just a vicious rumor! I would love to see the Salton Sea area be preserved, but I would hate for the locals to be at risk.

someone needs to seed the Salton Sea with brine shrimp.
tilapia need a predator that will help reduce their numbers. a fish that has low oxygen requirements and is hardy like the amia calva(the bowfin)
bowfin make great sport fish and put up a good fight.
its obvious these college boys dont have a clue about aquascaping a body of water.

I hope it's that simple. Would love to see the Salton area be saved.

water hyacinth should remove a great amount of nutrients that the salton sea has way too much of.
it will also provide a habitat for aquatic insects.
and will shade the sea from the hot sun and should cool it down to some degree.

esri in redlands california has a good scientific book called the salton sea atlas.
