  • Hi Vince and thanks for chiming in. Always a great pleasure to hear from my fellow VP Brothers. I looked you up in the VP tour book and found you listed under Crew 7 but not sure which one you are. The PN1 you were referring to is PN1 Lee. I am also in touch with PN3 Albert Cress, PN3 Stan Fisher, PN2 Vic Telles, YN2 Lorin Jones and several others from that time period. I am afraid that Bucky Hicks is in prison though. Hope you keep in touch and my very best to you and yours. Greg

  • HI Greg.

Yep…was Crew Two on Sangley Pt./Cam Rahn Cruise - and Crew 7 on Iwakuni/U-tapao Cruise. In the Crew Seen Pic my name is misspelled (it’s supposed to be SCHWALBE)…front row far right.

I recall you and PN1 Lee too. Sorry to hear about Bucky. What happened to Larry Kaminga- the FILIPINO - AMERICAN PN that served with you guys?

Drop Ed Cox a line…he’ll put you in touch with a BUNCH of VP-17 guys and I know he’d love to hear from you!

  • Hey Dude.......I sure remember "Bucky" (he as a PN, right?) - but having hard time placing you. PO1 with Filipino Chief looks VERY familiar. Who is he?

I was an ADJAN/ADJ3/ADJ2 with VP-17 (1968-71) worked Flight Line and was the Second Mech on Crews Two (Cdr May) and Crew 7 (LCDR Gastony). I also made those two Cruises to Iwakuni and Sangley Pt..

Lots of us ex- White Lighting Bolts stay in touch via Ed Cox and the "VP Navy WebSite"

  • Thanks for the memories. Was a photo mate with VP-17 from 1967-1970. Did the cruse book with Lt. Tolly. Wish that I had a motion picture camera back then. We really missed an opportunity to capture the day to day operations of P-2's and P-3's.

  • @gbldivmrk Great to here from you fellow VP Brother. Yes it would have been great to have a motion picture camera, I'm just glad I took as many stills as I did, it is a part of my past that I treasure and I always appreciate hearing from others that experienced those days. Thanks for commenting on my little video and I'm glad you liked it. My best regards, Greg

  • Aloha Greg,

I was an AT3 radio operator in VP-17 from Mar '69 to Oct '71. Deployed to Iwakuni and Sangley Pt. I was on Crew 2 w/ Cdr Quinn and Lt Skip Esty. This video really brought back memories. When I got out I stayed in Hawaii and I'm still here today. We sure had a lot of great experiences back then. I only wish I'd taken more photos and kept in touch a little more with some of the guys -- only 1 or 2 left here in Hawaii. Anyway, great video -- thanks for the memories.

  • @kentbill2 It has been a real pleasure for me to hear from some of the brothers I served with back in the day. I enjoyed my time at Sangley Pt and am always glad to hear from some of the great guys I served with, I am grateful to still be in contact with many of them. Thank you for the great response and feel free to keep in touch. Greg

  • Thanks for the comment. You didn't leave your name so not sure who you are. It is always a great pleasure and an honor to hear from my VP-17 brothers. Greg

  • You look familiar. I was in VP-17 68-70. Reported to the squadron when it was located in Whidbey Island and still had P-2Vs. Transitioned to P-3s and Barbers, and made the Iwakuni Deployment. I was a PR back then working in AV/Equip shop. Great video, brought back memories of that time. Thanks.

  • Hi Greg

Great video, brings back a lot of memories. I was in VP-17 from 1972-1975 and again 1979-1981. I recognize the 2 guys, in personnel I think. Have close to some of the same pictures. Was in the line crew and mech shop, flew for a little while as a aircrew trainee.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane!

  • @E6over13

Hi Paul, Thanks for the comment. I left the squadron just before you got there. I have been keeping in touch with several of our brothers from those days, it is always good to hear them. My best to you and yours.

    Greg

  • Hey Greg,

I was in VP 17 from 69 -71. I still remember those good old days. I worked in Comm with the Radio Operators. My pic is hidden deep in the pages of the Japan Cruise book. Thanks for sharing the nice VP 17 photos.

  • @homeinten

Hi Dave, Thanks for chiming in on my VP-17 video. Yes those were indeed the good ol days. I am so glad that so many of my VP-17 brothers have commented, it's always a great feeling hear from them. I wish you the best. Greg

  • Hi Greg: Chuck here from VP-17, I was in same flight crew as AT Chief Robbie, and I contact him reguarly. I was radio op. Time frame = 1965 to after end of deployment mid 1968. I remember you for sure. Flight engineer John Burrell is

a neaby friend here in Oregon. We get together every week for coffee and stories, all true sea stories of course. John is in your video at Sangly, I think Sangley.

  • @radiochuck1

Hi Chuck and thanks for your response. Glad to hear that you are also in contact with some of our ol' VP-17 brothers, I'd do anything to relive those days again. So you are in Oregon now, my wife and I are also thinking about moving to central Oregon area possibly in the Spring.

Hope you keep in touch Chuck, my best to you and yours. Greg

  • @glcarvings please do keep in touch. Now how to figure how we can email. I have contact for the 'boss, our skipper from those days, and several other guys you would know. I live SE of Portland. Chuck

  • Hi Greg, I was in VP- 17 late 69 through 72. I was in the ave equipment shop and several other locations. I was an AME-3.My name is Steve Mullins. My Cruise Book for that period was lost by the movers so I don`t have any of that to look back to. I am in contact with several people that was there on a daily basis through email. Thanks for the video...

  • @tex4me

Hi Steve thanks for the response. It's been a long time but your name is familiar to me, I worked in Admin along with Bucky Hicks and Loren Jones. I too am in the process of packing to move and I think my Cruise book is already packed to go or I would look you up. I really enjoy hearing from all my VP-17 brothers and treasure the memories of those younger years. Boy we sure had a time didn't we.

    Greg

  • Gregory, I was in VP-17 from july of 1966 until October of 1968. At that time i transferred to VR-21 in Barbers point . I was there until October of 1972

I was an ATC and spent most of my last year at the AIMD in Tthe P-3 Hangar.I transferred to VR-21 at about the same time as VP-17 was transitioning to P-3s.

  • @chiefrobby1

Thanks for the response Chief, it's always an honer to hear from the brothers who have served our country well and especially those in VP-17. Those were the days weren't they.

    Greg

  • Did you happen to know Layne Labhart or Ed Jackson stationed with VP 1 in Barbert's Point? They were both flight engineers in 1975. If so, please email me at sharonlbfla@gmail.com. Great video. Thank you so much.

  • @sbaswell

I didn't have the pleasure of knowing Labhart or Jackson in VP1 but we were all brothers working for the same cause. Thanks for the comment on the video

    Greg

  • VP 6 , ss 1 / 3, b/w 74 and 76, very same tour but you'd have to throw in Iran and the Shahs tour of the P3 for coastal patrol (a clandestine mission back then). Of course the plane broke and we had to wait 2 wks for parts in Bandar Abbas. The best of my best days.

  • @arcnspark8 Thanks for the comment VP brother. Yes I would also have to say those were some of my best days serving in VP-17. Greg

  • Great video! Reminds me of all the great times we had in VP-17 during the early 70s. Lots of familiar faces!

  • @ltrotter Thanks for the great response, yes we did have some times back then. Makes me wonder where where everyone ended up. I am fortunate enough to still be in touch with many of my good buddy's in VP-17 who served with me during that time. Greg

  • Do you have any pictures or even a single picture of any of our planes (VP17) on the ground in Cam Rah Bay?

I left a lot of things behind in cavitie, least the parts i was sober enough to remember. hello to "alice" there!

  • Sorry VP buddy, I don't have a single picture of Cam Rah Bay. Thanks for the comment, hope Alice gets your howdy.

    Greg

  • @purgatoryarts

Reach out to Ed Cox (was with VP-17 flying as Second Mech in P2 and P3s) at nep147967@comcast.net

Ed has PLENTY of pics of VP-17 from Cam Rahn Bay

  • I was in VP-17 in 1971, what a memory lane trip. Was in the PI at Sangley Point NAS

  • Sangley Point...the stories that I could tell about Cavity. Thanks for responding fellow VP-17 friend.

    Greg

  • Thanks for the memories. I came to VP-17 in '72. made the Naha cruise that year and Cubie point the next. Had a wonderful time. Break off my legs, teaar out my arms but don't send me back to Uta-pao. :-)

    Way to much fun.

  • Thanks for the great comment, yes I feel the same way about Utapao. It is especially cool that you were also in VP-17...those were the days, seems like a long time ago...oh wait a minute...it WAS a long time ago.

    Thanks again,

    Greg

  • That is cool. Reminds me of my days in the Navy and the cute little girls overseas also! Paul
