  • peak oil is NOT a theory, there is not an unlimited amount of oil, it will be depleted, its called Hubard's peak

  • Superman will arrive and save the earth. His arrival will usher in a new fossil fuel free

  • DUDE ADOPT ME

  • You might want ot look up "malthusianism" and, ofc, Malthus, to see if you find some common points between this dooms day theory and the one from the 19th century. Before that one were others as well, only without too much science flavor on top so I guess everyone would easily dismiss those nowadays...

Malthus was sure we'll all die of starvation because we are getting too many and the earth ressources are not enough. Peak oil gets the same credit from me.

  • Definitely peak oil but capitalism does not rely on continued growth. Keynesian economic systems rely on continued growth (e.g. "credit"). Austrian/classic economics is self balancing, just like before Federal Reserve. If there was no welfare (a.k.a credit) then people would not be so content with living dumb and happy and comfortable.

  • @stereorail that is correct. I wish I re-edited that sentence to say our economic system relies on continued growth.

  • Interesting video!!! Thanks for sharing!

  • Well, I did all of this in the 60-70's and realize the difficulty being complete. I lived in West MA at the time and many groups developed for bartering. Something like this needs 'Bartering', no other way my friend - you can't do it all. Like your pellet stove, who will make your pellets?

When our country finds out there isn't any Gold in Fort Knox, then what? I can't finish your videos right now but will later. Your ahead of the curve!

  • This is very smart. I like how you are not biased as well. But if you have a bad storm or something will you still get power? My power was out for a couple days but we still could use the stove cause it was gas.

  • @SubieSean You need a battery back-up in order for the grid tied solar system to keep powering. It automatically shuts off when the grid is out because the solar would act like a generator and kill the linesmen...

  • Peak oil site advertising buying a new chevy truck.

  • OIL IS ABIOTIC, LOOK UP LINDSEY WILLIAMS, OIL IS ABIOTIC, AND THE ENERGY NON-CRISIS, IT'S ALL A HOAX FOR THE GLOBALISTS TO RUN THE PRICE OF. WE NOW KNOW THAT THERE IS 400 HUNDRED YEARS FOR WORTH OF OIL IN THE UNITED STATES, WE COULD $1.50 GAS IF THE GUBMENT WOULD BE HONEST! IF YOU LOOK AT THE FIRST 12 VIDEOS ON MY PAGE YOU WILL SEE A LOT OF TRUTH.

  • @LOWRIDER4UNATL Are you serious? A pastor? I'm sure faith provides comfort to some in times of crisis, but where oil is concerned, I think I'll hedge my bets on the advice of engineers, geologists and traders. Whatever helps you make sense of the world I guess, it's your life.

  • World Oil Supply crisis? I hear/read this since I'm a child. We have more than enough oil, the oil just gets more expensive to extract. 150$/barrel allows the extraction of so much additional oil. In Europe we have the gas tax problem, but so we don't feel oil price rises so hard, americans feel it.They paid up to ~4,50$ in mid-2008, early 2009 under 3$, maybe even only 2,75$, but people would even pay 6$. But if the price gets a special point alternatives like GtL and CtL would be used....

  • Taking 10 years to prepare for something as complex as Peak Oil is about the only way to do it without going crazy. Step by step. Slowly learning the skills etc..

  • If an economy doesn't continue to get fed with cheap energy inputs, it will not grow. We're trapped in an unsustainable economic model of needing this growth.

  • Great 10 year plan...very smart. You are a futurist as well as energyczar....

  • Also, the stats on oil production show that it has been flat since the mid 2000's.

That means it is not increasing in response to higher prices, contrary to the theories of many economists. You're right, there is no such thing as infinite growth in a closed system, our current economic model is not sustainable for generations to come.

  • Hi Peter,

Remember Peak Oil is NOT a theory, it is a simple fact. Let's not mince words.

    Good luck

  • the answer is a free market, babe.

  • To the uploader, What a legend. People like you restore my faith in humanity! Check out Totnes, a town near where i live moving into transition, I'm sure they'd love to talk with you and share some information. They even had Richard Hienberg there not so long ago to give a talk...

  • I'm 23 and I live with my parents, they refuse to even acknowledge any of this stuff is happening so I can't make a farm out of the garden. As I live in the UK (and don't want to get stuck here if half the population is starving) would it be a good idea to learn hunter-gatherer survival skills e.g. fishing, trackers, making temp shelters? How would the base skills help my chance to survive? Or would I be better finding an abandoned house and grow a farm there?

  • good work

  • Peak oil is not a theory. It is a fact. Otherwise, a very intelligent and approach to a real problem.

  • Awesome videos! You have so many great ideas for reducing energy usage. Good job!

  • Check Russia, Iraq,Brazil, Kazakhstan/Azerbaijan (whole Caspian Sea), sub-Saharan Africa: many small players (Ghana just started) and big ones Angola/Nigeria, Sudan which got potential when Southsudan will be an own country. An Egypt got billion of barrel reserves too, which are now with the new goverment easier to develop. Oil will get more expensive! This brings many alternatives: Gas/Coal/Bio to Liquid, unconventional oils and others... but oil companies like panic, it brings them cash...

  • @KilonBerlin I used to work in a petrol station. One day there was media talk of a shortage in the coming weeks, although fuel drops that week were same as normal. Within one evening through to the end of the next day of that story breaking, my garage was the only one left with any fuel (as we had the latest delivery) and we took more money in 12 hours than any day previous. The whole area was out of fuel, simply because of the word panic.

  • oh commentar needs to be approved... okay. However, the Panic (I'm watching the oil market for quite a long time in my young life), the panic lead to the ~145$ peak in july 2008. Same now, we had again prices around 130$ for some high quality sorts. Now still over 100$, but the normal demand and offer situation has never been a problem, or when did you see all the gas stations in your area closed because of oil shortages?! In Europe this was 1973 as far as I know and not due to a peak...

  • @KilonBerlin Peak oil is no myth, its proven math. Most of the worlds OPC's peaked years ago. The remaining fields are in areas that take more energy to get less back, like tar sands in canada or deep offshore drilling, and less developed countries that are politically unstable. All of this doesnt matter anyway, as demand continues to increase. Keep looking into it, and its effects on the global economy.

  • I didn't look the video, I know such persons who try to collect all their energy by solar panels, high energy efficiency, insulation and so on. That's not bad, but if it gets maniac its... I mean here in Germany I see it, Germany has been Nr. 1 in Windpower until 2007 or even 2008, than the USA got first, but US area is ~30 times higher with I think more than 100 times more coast lines. In the US gasoline is still extreme cheap and power too. So... do your steps, but don't panic.

  • CooL VID aLL channeL is CooL THANKs

  • Peak oil, well lets put it this way. Peak Oil adds another large factor to the Drake Equation, one that earth, coincidentally, does not likely meet.

  • guess what fatasses were gonna be riding bikes for a while

  • ten dollars a gallon; that was a year ago :P, oh, i am so glad i ride a bike :), or go transit/train/bus, skating or walking :)

  • what cell phone plan do you have?

  • @Ukraine732 No monthly plan or contract. I just pay T-Mobile $100 and get a thousand minutes worth of calls/text, good for one year...... If it doesn't last the year, you can just buy more in smaller increments and all the minutes will be good for another 12 months.... I think you have to get $100 first to have future add on purchased minutes good for 12 months....

  • Am I the only one who thinks that peak oil sounds kinda romantic? Society crashing down lol. No more internet and phones. Hunting, star-gazing and love-making by the fire!

  • @HelenaXVI Haha live the anarcho-primitivist dream!

  • My 10 year plan= Buy Guns and make friends with my local farmer.

  • Awesome video. The gov't really should start providing grants to make these kinds of fossil fuel-dependency changes and invest in the future if they don't already.

Why the dramatic swells of music at the end though? Sounds like "Eye of the Tiger" is about to start. Haha, otherwise great vid.

  • good idea to prepare for the worst. do you use wind turbines as well? maybe a good idea to supplement the solar panels with another form of energy i think the solution to many problems in today's world is for most or all to become self-sufficient. this would reduce gov power/influence, deplete pollution dramatically, and allow for Humans to evolve to a higher existence. i am developing and building a green-green house this spring that will be run on 100% green power. ill add/sub u. goodluck

  • I find this great that you have decided to undertake initiative in reducing your oil useage. However, reducing consumption will still inevitably lead to a point where demand exceeds supply. To really fix the problem you must fix the foundation of how our energy demands are met on a macroeconomical scale. Unless governement policy is implemented, this will only occur when oil becomes relatively more expensive than other alternative energy sources.

  • Impressed with what you have done to your house, life and surroundings. Time is short, it would be good to hear about where you acquired some of your products.

  • MR ENERGY CZAR,

Good job yet I have the ability to see the sadness in all of our folly.

Americans will now try to make the unsustainable cul de mc mansion a retro fitted eco station yet they are clueless as to the embedded energy required to do so in order for a community to survive and thus a million little fading beacons of light in an ever darker world doing with less and less with each passing day.

I am not so sure that you took the same pill which I took... :)

  • all we need to do is power our cars with hydrogen and our buildings with nuclear power then we have no environmental problems in fact we can power anything with hydrogen and the only by-product is water that as we all know is just oxygen and hydrogen in fact im only 14 but im an engineering student but i will build a hydrogen generator and power my home from it when im older and then the only power i need is hydrogen wich is the most abundant substance in the universe

  • @liverfaliure there is no usable hydrogen on this planet! It has to be made, usually through electrolysis. Then, it's not even a source of energy, it's just a carrier. Hydrogen has some use, but it currently takes more energy to make than it you get from using it.

  • @simplemind111 to go further on your comment hydrogen will always use more energy to make than it creates by burning ,all we can do is energy arbitraj meaning switching from a fast growing price energy type to a slower growing energy type until we have a new way of making energy like wind sollar nuclear fusion etc ,the transition will be awful for everybody we think that beeing human makes us superior and not have to obey the rules of nature .

  • @liverfaliure please watch ZEITGEIST MOVIE as I cant possibly be the one to tell you that much of what you think you know is false in any effective and constructive way :D

Sometimes I want to believe comments like yours are simply setups for the great replies that will surely follow :)

  • Hi do you have the specifics to where you got most of your equipment? i'm having trouble finding things like the timer for ur fridge and stuff.

  • @Jays0n54 come on people! If you have internet access and you havent found a good site(s) for energy saving devices solar panels etc etc then perhaps you are one of those who are not suppose to survive something like the upheaval, great and rapid change that something like PEAK OIL could/should/will bring about? oops! :D

  • Hi Peter, I've watched your videos, do you have a copy of your 10 yr. plan? I'm currently in the early stages of my plan, and would like to review yours to see if I missed anything.

  • Who knows when oil peaked or will peak. The fact of the matter is that the people who control these things ARE NOT YOUR FRIENDS. That is enough for me to want to wean myself as much as possible. Also if oil isn't getting rarer, why do we keep going to war over it?

  • Peak Oil is coming.....

  • Great video explaining our delima....

  • @Dragonzphoenix Conventional oil peaked in 2006 according to the IEA.

  • @kevjay777 whatever is the reason, it is importnt to remain as energically independent as you can.

  • i like your research ! a lot 10 year plan its a very good way to digest all the work.

  • awesome series!!! Thank you so much for sharing!

  • @Dragonzphoenix According to whom? The oil companies? You are a fool if you believe them. The US & German militaries. Lloyd's of London, Richard Branson, Robert Hirsch, Matt Simmons all (including the data) say that we hit the peak 2005-2008 and that we will feel it big 2012-2014. Pull your head out of the sand!

  • We do not "NEED" oil! It will "PEAK" when they say it will Peak! As your Video shows we do not need to depend on the thing that Sheeple call government! 5*****s

  • You are on the right track....being patient and thinking long term is the way to go. Great video series.

  • i'm subscribing to your channel. I like your common sense, down to earth approach.

  • Sounds like its time to stock up on canned goods and shotgun shells.

I alreally have 3 years worth of both :)

Solar panels are not practical in my area..... too much wind in the winter time that blows too many tree limbs.

I'm working on adding my second wind generator

  • @Dragonzphoenix 2057!!!!!!!! sorry butt i don't believe in 'government oriented' geologists, i believe only in the great M. Hubbert, he never failed a prediction.

And...look by yourself at data extraction, you will see that the world is not more able to achieve the value of 2008 and this neans only one thing

  • @Dragonzphoenix Thanks for the comment. I believe the average consensus for the peak amongst both oil companies and independent experts ranges from 2005 to 2040 (oil companies)... I know some who say there will never be a peak, but I point out there has to be some point of maxium oil production unless we don't live in a spherical planet....

  • @MrEnergyCzar how can the peak range from 2005 to 2040 if we are almost in 2011? and this year, at least towards the end of this year, there is a new record oil consumption I think... something near 88 million barrel a day, with Russia producing slightly over 10 million barrels a day (2010 average), I did believe in Peak Oil too... I still do, but it will take very long and it's even unclear how oil is being produced. The old estimates of reserves and so on were all wrong...

  • @KilonBerlin Generally Peak Oil refers to conventional oil production -- cheap, easy oil -- which has likely peaked. To make up for a decline in conventional production, we are relying increasingly on natural gas liquids and unconventional sources like deepwater and oil sands to make up the difference. These unconventional sources are more expensive to produce, and just like conventional sources are finite. Whether we have reached a peak of all petroleum is open to debate...

  • There's a field in Russia, the geographic possible oil in place is 3 trillion liters due to experts, and never all oil can be extracted, production declined heavy in 80's but than again increased in late 90's and 2005 the field had produced more than 3 trillion liters...still producing. It's a mystery where that oil comes from, abiotic fraction uses this example for the theory of abiotic oil that is produced inside the earth. Ghawar was estimated 60 billion in place, soon 70 billion produced...

  • These are very impressive videos, and very inspiring too. I really like the idea of a 10 year plan, as it gives some cash flow comfort. And the peaceful and pragmatic way to communicate the message is a value added, since so many videos and more comments are "I know best than scientists or geologists if peak oil or climate change or ...whatever ... is true or not".

I am curious to know how many kWh you consume from the grid each year.

Why not a composting toilet too, it is good for the garden.

  • @MultiMarou Since the Hot Water Heat Pump was brought in my total annual KWH usage plummeted to about 3,200 KWH per year or 9 per day. I make 5,000 KWH / year. Extra to go to fuel plug -in vehicle. As far as composting toilet, the town zoning won't allow it..... I was lucky to get the solar array approved.

  • @MrEnergyCzar

I found your videos after viewing a video about passive solar windows. I love the videos and will now try to get my solar going with even more earnst. Where can I buy a TED? Also, which of your books would give me more info about your pellet home heater?

    yount3000

  • Great first video, I'm going to watch the other 3 now.

  • Peak oil is as much a myth as global warming, but it doesn't matter because being self-sufficient is just as important for other reasons which will affect us just as bad if not worse. The commenter below who worked for BP and says PO was in 1999 believes what he is saying because most of us are not taught to research or to think, but are taught "what" to think. I too have more myths to get out of my head, but the point it you are doing well to go off grid. We are getting closer. Semper Paratus.

  • I would also recommend using an induction hob (cook top I think you call it in the US). Induction cooking is about 80% efficient at turning electricity in to usable heat and are as responsive as Gas. They only heat the pan and not the surrounding cook top or air. You do need to use ferrous metal pans though.

  • Great set of videos. The only thing I didn’t like was the use of wood pellets as a fuel source. Yes wood is CO2 neutral but it does cause air pollution mainly in the form of particulate pollution and is not as energy efficient as using a ground or air source heat pump for space heating / cooling especially considering you already have a PV array.

    h t t p : / / b u r n i n g i s s u e s . o r g / c a r - w w w / i n d e x . h t m l

  • Peak oil was in 1999.

I was a contractor for BP exploration at the time.

I assure you it was 1999.

  • @EndTheMatrix I thought it happened in 2010?

  • I was just reading one of your comments on theoildrum. I comment on there once in a while also.

  • Thanks for this series. How did you handle installation of all the components and functions? Were you able to do this yourself or did you need to bring in people? Was this factored in to costs?

I'm really interested in doing something like this in the future! However, being in an apartment - I have limited possibilities at the moment.

  • Great vid. Thanks for the info as well as the inspiration. I look forward to watching the next ones.

  • This is great!

Making changes at home, in your daily lifestyle, can provide such a feeling of empowerment it's well worth the extra work.

It's great that you're looking ahead to your future, and preparing. Cheers. :)

  • Czar, I made it to your channel Via John Wells video and was very happy to see what you are doing. We Americans should take the lead in being responsible with resources as we are in the perfect position to do this and have some of the best minds available at this time who are currently in the Computer Tech industry. If pres Obama was any kind of president he would have started up programs like FDR did in that would steer us towards self sufficiency and a strong America. Keep it up!

  • I just showed this to my family and we are taking the first steps. I have a disability which Im giving up surgery for to help pay for doing this. I believe in the future we won't have the same liberal ideas regarding those who can't produce and participate in hard labor, social liberalism is basically made possible by the cheap oil bubble,. Your little things points are great, For example, my father pays for a comcast subscription just to get Bill Maher, Ive asked to get rid of it, but I always

  • I read your comment at Mike Ruppert's blog and just subscribed to your channel. I'm looking forward to watching all of your videos. I am planning to build a modern energy-efficient house. By chance, can you recommend any good books on this subject? Thank you.

  • @Hans47 at the end of the 4th video I recommend 2 off the grid books...I would subscribe to Home Power magazine as well which does a good job of explaining these systems...best of luck...

  • @Hans47

If you don;t have big bins, in the yard, whos going to stop you? It may be against codes. But if it goes from toilet to fruit trees, and you don;t have big barrels, and bins around the yard, nobody is going to stop you, especially if it doesnt not smell or cause a problem.. If they do, deal with it, as it comes. But if you do it right, why would they complain.. They don;t have a reason to complain, if you don't cause a problem with it. Big bins and barrels of poo, will cause complaints.

  • Wow! Great job and great documentary. Very insightful comments about the nature of happiness and the distorted beliefs most Americans have.

  • Good video. Peak oil will come and those who still rely on oil everyday will hurt the most from it. In all reality we are hurting now from it, along with hurting our environment. A all electric car will be my next investment. In the next 5 years I will have a mini wind and solar farm off grid. For those interested in wind power check out the video's I upload. I have tested a few item's from the do it your self wind power site's you find on the web.

  • Peter, Thanks for your vids. I really liked what you said and it made me think about several things for myself and family. Would enjoy keeping in touch with you and gaining knowledge and as I learn more, sharing ideas. Thanks again and all the best. Frank

  • Great job, nice solar panel, thanks for sharing everything you're doing! Everyone should follow your steps little by little :)

  • 1:27 "the earth is actually finite"

why can't more people figure this out!!

    :(

  • It's gonna get worse and worse as they'll have less oil =(

Good luck with your project =)

  • In Alberta they talk of Oil sands available for 100Years. It is true but the truth is we spend more than 1 Barrel of Oil to process 2 Barrels of Oil, Calgary is now declared the most polluted place in earth because of the amount of pollutants produced per person is highest in the world! The oil sand becomes more and more difficult to process and when we spend 1 barrel of oil to recover 1 barrel of oil then it may be better to stop producing oil from this oil sands.

  • I watched your series, then retrospectively wanted to know what your opinion was on "on demand" hot water heaters, basically small devices that heat the small amount of water passing through to high temperatures quickly, and only when its being used. I know its more efficient in situations where hot water is rarely used (because it doesn't need to keep an entire tank hot the entire time), but I was wondering if you had any experience or knowledge on them.

  • nice vids

    sub me please

  • I love how you mentioned the five stages of grief. My entire immediate family has been researching this independently without knowing any others were looking into it. Even my girlfriend knew about it when I talked to her about it and she's completely ready for it. I know that, personally, I never went through that emotional transition. I simply accepted the facts as they were and am now ready to start changing my life. My mother is my only issue at this point. She's in denial.

  • I think people don't understand that to build different energy systems it takes huge amounts of energy...I just spent quite a bit of time looking into the decline rates of existing fields and we need giagantic finds like every month to keep up with the decline rates...in 2009 we had a supposed good year, we discovered 10 billlion barrels yet we used 30 billion, and that was a good recent year...

  • @sashasacutie2 excellent point..you also lose energy everytime you transfer it from one form to another....

  • Comment removed

  • @hitssquad You can't lump all energy sources together based on there energy content. What we are facing is a liquids fuel problem. Unless we can quickly start flying on nuclear powered 747's and turning over our entire car fleet to electric, then nuclear power has its limitations. It is an important source of energy, but not a saving grace. Also, uranium can't put additional oil in the ground. An oil fields depletion is inevitable as soon as the first barrel is extracted.

  • @dustmonk74 No to mention how dangerous nuclear power is. Just look at the mess in japan. and even if meltdowns didn't happen, we have no clue what to do with the waste, or how to clean up contaminated materials. I think after the incident that happened in japan, we'll be more weary about thinking that nuclear is the future. and rightly so, that stuff is way too dangerous for people to be messing with.

  • @hitssquad SURPLUS(net) in energy and the use of TECHNOLOGY have given us our current way of life. That surplus has an ecological, and energy cost to it that over time become more difficult to attain. We have been beneficiaries of easy energy surplus the past 100 years. Understand?>

  • @hitssquad There is your problem. You are equating something that has no physical value(i.e. money) in your calculation. Listen, our society runs on energy, ALL biological systems, LIFE, require energy degradation. If you use up more energy than you consume, you'd be dead. Energy growth defies the laws of thermodynamics. There is no "FREE" energy. You are drinking the Koolaid if you think otherwise. Entropy, all that kind of stuff. Look it up. Thermo-economics.

  • @hitssquad

Do you think extracting 10 barrels of oil at the cost of 12 barrels of oil or energy equivalent is smart?

  • Exactly. I'm talking about availability and transport. Same with oil. there are vast resources of oil, but is it economically feasible to produce the oil? No, the net energy decreases because it becomes harder to find and produce. The easy part has been done the past 100 years. Understand? Plus other factors as well such as ecology.

  • @newb2yutube I mean yes, but there is a rub.

  • @hitssquad @hitssquad

Wow, I guess you're one of those people who think overpopulation is a myth too?

(70,000 years of oil)? The whole world contains 75% water, why does it cost money then? Why are there people and countries in need of water?

  • @hitssquad as far a nuclear/electicity to process oils etc...electricity, water and natural gas used to process the oil has to be included in the calculation of how good the energy source really is...the problem is that the good easy stuff has been in decline world wide and we are trying to keep up with energy intensive heavy oils, tar sands and eventually coal to liquids which will yield less net energy overall....

  • Technocracy proposes a Steady State economy.

Google "m. king hubbert on the nature of growth. 1974"

  • GREAT VIDEOS. Thanks for posting.

  • When do you think peak oil will hit? Do you think we are there now?

  • @StormCloudsGathering good question, for conventional crude oil we are at the peak now...most agree it was in 2005 or 2006....the problem is that if it takes 10 million barrels of oil to extract out 85 million barrels you are only producing a net of 75 million barrels per day...they seem to only track what is actually produced, not the net production...If it takes you $100 to drive to and from work and you earn $150, did you really earn 150 or a net of 50?....

  • Great video, somehow it doesn't feel that bad when you get to the acceptance stage - it might actually be a much better world and lifestyle! Good job, inspirational!

  • Proper!

  • use an electric car

can find convertions in used EV tradeing posts online.

some as low as $4,000 without batteries

plus transport from the state you find it in to your door can be over $1,000

  • Wow, when the price of everything soars after peak oil, this guy will already be prepared. It makes you think that everyone could chop down their utility bills to free up more money....

  • Great video, really love the TED and the watt meter. thanks for the graet video and hope to see more from you.
