By the way... the plastic bucket there (30 L) is made of heat proof plastic! There is no risk involved in using it. You must remember to clean the copper column from time to time with a light acid like lemon juice for example.
wait guys, there is a couple of things i need to know, the first is what can I use for the coils besides copper, the second is how long does it really take, and thirdly I have a couple jars of canned corn, like it was cut off of the cob and canned a long time ago, can I use that, and how? leave reply as a comment
Poke around for old telephone poles. They are sold cheaply online and many times given away for free by the city. They have tons of great, thick copper wire for grounding left on them. A bit much to haul but if you can totally worth it for the wood and copper.

Funny, I made this like 4 years ago. Now it has over 37 000 views :-)
The actual apparatus had a thermometer on top, measuring the temperature of the gas. Plus some fans directed at the column to increase speed.
We later made a tank of water that one side of the column was sinked in, then we didn't need to be afraid of gas coming out of the column.
I remember we got 90 - 96% out this at its best.... good times :-)

You can't magically change ethanol into poisonous methanol by boiling it too hot, lol.

Actually methonal boils even lower then ethanol lol
as long as its working youll get the methyls out.
and just dispose of the first 5%-10% of anything you intend to drink.
problem solved

Because alcool + plastic + heat = toxic
Glandock 4 years ago
hehe, well dude. I know it works and its not toxic. :D
u only use 300w to boil it, and it work perfect. U get 90-95% pure alcohol out of it. The only think thats sux is it takes like 3 days.
Snippra 4 years ago
why do you do that when you can just buy ethanol (PURE) alcohol (methylated spirits) for like two bucks?

You are wrong my friend.
As long as the plastic is PP or PE
the alcohol will not be toxic.
