I play mostly with my wrists but practice simple beats over extended times and focus on relaxing while you play. Sometimes saying relax relax relax while playing is helpful for me when I start cramping up
Thanks for sharing your skill - your video has been really informative. CD's are good but you need to see somebody playing the drum to see the real technique behind the sound.
more please - I cant tell you how helpful this is - I just bought my 1st hand drum. Can you show a couple more foundational/fundemental exercises... thanks again, very very helpful
yeah those are gr8 ;) you gave me more ideas how to rise my djembe playing.. :) of course i can make a response video..and you could chechk it what's wrong with it...and like what I'm Not doing right...i know that our tehnic is same as in Africa*Gambija* becouse our teacher were there and his a real percussion fan..and it's hes job also...so i have lot of concerts ;)
anyway thx for this one ;) waiting new vid!!! ;)
Thanks Erik, with Christmas coming and I'm moving back to California on Friday it will be at least the middle of Jan. Also I have some videos coming with me on kit doing double bass technique. Enjoy
I have tried to show the beats broken down as paradiddles, triplets and open rolls. I just then put them together in combinations as I go. You must work these different beat patterns slowly an be able to play them seperatly good enough so that you don't have to think about them. I will be putting up a web page in the near future where I will be selling short teaching videos for #1.00 each. Thanks for your comments. David Johnson (barefootdave)
How do you keep your shoulders and arms loose while playing? I grow stiff as I grow slowly fast into the rhythems.

Thanks for the lessons. Can you break down a complex beat slowly? That would be really helpful for a lot of people.
