I have 3 stones: 14"/115lb, 16"/175lb, 18"/240lb. The 2 light stones are easy but I fail on the 240lb one. I know it is not because of my legs or back. It is my grip that fails. It is like the stone slips right between my arms/hands. Any suggestions as to what to do about this or supplemental exercise I can to to increase this specific type of grip?
@yyportne -Hello, thanks for the comment! Sounds like you need to develop your crushing power (ie: squeezing arms inwards as if delivering a fatally strong hug, lol). For your chest and arms, I suggest strap suspended pushups, bringing your hands together each rep. Also, hold 2 plates together in front of your, pressing them in with the palms of your hands so they don't fall... lift from in front of you to overhead and back. Work up to heavier plates. Also, are you using chalk or tacky?
@topformfitness Thanks for answering my question. “Crushing power”, exactly! I do have Blast Straps so I will try that pushup variation. I have not used tacky because I wanted to be able to lift the stone without it. I don’t currently compete (although I have though about trying some local stuff) so buying tacky is just another expense. Tacky makes sense for those who compete, but maybe I will buy a tub to see how well it works and how long it lasts.
@yyportne - Are you using chalk at least for now? Definitely chalk up the hands and forearms. Also make sure you're not trying to lift it 'with your arms', ie: don't attempt to pull it up to you with your arm strength... just get your hands / fingers as FAR under it as you can, pretty much in the center of the stone, straddle it, crush it tight with your hands / arms, but lift with your legs/hips/back straight up... once the stone passes your knees, rack it on your knees for the transition.
@yyportne try doing your stone lifting without any tack for the 115 and 175, do the movment slower and more controlled, with those 2 stones, do timed holds with them also. then after some time do the 240 with tack, .if this does not apply for you... if u make your own stones, try making either a 200 pound stone for helping you get to the 240, or, try maing another 16'' 240 pound stone with weights inside, so a 16 inch 240 stone. but possibly try doing heavy bench flys ,to increase ur squeeze
nice tutorial, my stone moulds on order from slaterstones at 240lbs.iv never lifted a perfectly round stone b4 ive trained with stones, logs, barrles etc for a while aswell as powerlifitng (wihout that bench shirt powersuit bullshit) do u think this weight will be a good starting stone or have i gone in too high for my first stone.
@tomlennon1000 - Hey Tom, thanks for the comment. I think 240 is a good starting stone for most guys who have some powerlifting experience. But it depends on how strong you are I suppose... either way, once you get used to the technique you'll be playing with the 240. Have fun with it!
These look expensive.

bubbi666 2 years ago
Hey Bubbi,
Yes, that's correct... 90kg. It's our baby stone for beginners. You have a good eye for weight, bro! How did you guess that?
