  • This is a beautiful piece of American capability.

  • I read somewhere that this museum once had plans to remove this engine and restore it to operating condition for a movie, but changed plans when the the movie script was scrapped. Even if they did manage to restore this engine, there is very little track left in this country that this engine can run on due to its enormous weight.

Still a nice piece of history

  • I'm 12 and what is this

  • @34105swanage i agree that a4 belongs back in england can we have it back please

  • @MrM4ttyf There's a slight problem to that. The building that the A4 is in, was built around the train along with the #4017 ans the GG1. The only way to get them out would be to dismantle the building. Also the A4 is one of the crown jewels of the museum's collection and I don't see them having any intention on moving it.

  • @34105swanage So tell us..Just WHO are you "firing" for ??...Because, I WILL come and watch you !! A 4-4-4-4

    ??!!?

  • Awesome vid! I'm looking forward to seeing X4017 in the summer when we go up to Green Bay.

  • @straswa you'll have to take some video of it and post it to this one to share!

  • @34105swanage So your saying that a 'Big Boy' should be a 4-4-4-4, for a person or whatever you are who claims to be a 'fireman' to say that this Big Boy should have being built as a 4-4-4-4 shows me that not all your marbles are their.

  • One thing i don't quite understand is why the Americans of all people (no offence meant by that) haven't kept at least one of these fabulous locomotives running as a kind of heritage train. To show the history behind both UP and the Trans-Continental Railroad.

  • i never really seen a big boy in person but i have seen the Allegheny 2-6-6-6 #1601 in person. I would say that both of them might be about the same size almost. I know The big boy is longer but maybe not higher. It stil is one of my top 5 Steamers.

  • @SuperBigboy4884 at the beginning of the photo show you'll see a person standing with a green shirt he is about 5'8" tall so that should give you a idea the height.

  • Are you a loud to pull the whistle Rope and bell rope

  • @1BoyAwesome not sure if they had those still attached, been over 3 years ago, but if they did it wouldn't of worked anyways i am sure.

  • @tmaq97 They don't have the ropes attached. However I do know that if you pull hard enough the throttle, that will move. Same as with the DM&IR 2-10-2 they have there.

  • 4017 & 4018 will run again

  • @trainmanauxl1 Uh, dude, one, there HUGE, second that would probably cost a massive amount of money to work on the boiler, tubes, firebox etc. Only one hope, that UP gets bored with a lot of money and buys the Bigboy's aka 4017. Or the one at Steamtown. Then Steamtown can use the money to restore 759 yeh!!!!!!!

  • @nkproad777 I neglected to metion that the boiler on 4018 is in perfect condition and my my friend (timtrain) apparentlyc mis-informed me about the condition of other parts of the locomotive. How do ya' like them apples?

  • @trainmanauxl1 Still, gonna need a big railroad to see her run, don't get me wrong, I want to see them run at least once more, but the UP or someone else would have to buy the 4018, cause it would cost a lot to opperate that beast.

  • it is awesome and i seen it too

  • I might be wrong, but I think there is a Big Boy in the railroad museum in Sacramento CA. I saw a HUGE steam engine there anyway.

  • now i want to travel to wisconsin to see bigboy.

  • Classy video and music. I quite enjoyed this one.

  • my grandpa used to drive those HAULERS.

  • Sorry for the horrible image quality, the camera i had then at the time was, get this only a 1.3 mp camera! So if or when i go back to this place i'll have a much better camera to take images of what you have seen here, thanks for viewing!

  • @tmaq97 No worries.... just glad to see such a mighty beast.

  • i see u have a britis loco there

  • Yes, they have the train that Dwight D. Eisenhower used as a command office in Europe during WWII. The locomotive, (a sister of the Mallard) was named after him.

  • How long of a train could this beast pull? How does that compare to todays trains ? How did the brakes work as i am guessing no air pressure ? thank you.

  • @olechevy From what I heard about 4 - 5 miles.

  • well on flat land 1 bigboy could pull a 5 1/2 mile train i know thats unreal but true =)

  • Chase1609......Yes, it "COULD"......but, in

    Steve Lee's own words.....it WON'T.

The UP is the ONLY road in the world that was "set up" to handle the Big Boy's....as they owned them..but, they are NO Longer able to,,,,and as Steve himself has said many times over......they (UP) don't want one...either.

The 3985 and the 844 are enough, as far as they're concerned...the logistics

and cost of operation for a 4000class today would be astonomical and the UP wants none of it. Sadly !!

  • i believe the erie triplex might have been larger than the big-boy?

  • Chase1609.....REALLY ?!!!?...Well anyone

of them will gladly let you do it.......and

you have How Many 100's of Millions of

dollars to restore it, then talk the UPRR into letting you have all new Y's and turntables built big enough to

turn it when needed, build new facilities large enough to store and service it...AND then, replace all the rail with a heavier rated steel to take the weight and pounding of it. Nice Thought....but..!!

  • I'm thrilled that it's been restored & moved inside! Also looks like a nice new building. I was there 15+ yrs. ago and Big Boy was outside in the elements & the buildings weren't as nice as those in the vid. Thanks for the post!

  • only cosmetically restored. I'm not impressed. If they had put her back to fire, then I would happy.

  • Polybun.....actually, the Best "candidate"

for restoration....is the one down in Texas....and almost happened......until the UP told them that they (UP) didn't want it after the "Big Boy" movie was made........as ALL (except one) of the turning "Y"s.....large enough service facilities, turn tables, heavy rail, etc.....were all long gone.....approximate cost of restore to fire (then) was about

2.5 mil....but, no home for it to run. : (

  • Eh, they all say that. Shit, UP said the only way the 4449 would run on their rail was with her rods off and being towed to a scrap heap. Now she is doing double headers with the 844.

  • @Polybun Probably because UP owns SP now and it was some good PR for them

  • You know it can take years for them to put a fire in a steam engines!!!! So of the rust SO BAD that its almost (sometimes is) impossible to put a fire!!

  • Care to say that in English?

  • nice BIG BOY and GG-1 Great photos. Love that Big Boy. Thanks for posting.

  • Great photos. Love that Big Boy. Thanks for posting.

  • No problem! i'm glad you like them.

  • UP Big Boy steam locomotive King of all train's I tip my hat to you

  • Believe it or not the Big Boy wasn't the biggest engine ever built. It was a pretty close second though.

  • The big boy was the BIGGEST STEAM ENGINE!!!

  • the big boy was the largest boiler

  • nice BIG BOY and GG-1

  • I got to blow the whistle and turn the bell nob at the LA County Fair! It's a beuty!!!

    Ten years old Mason

  • This Engine is on display at the Nation RailRoad museum in Green Bay Wisconsin. It is extramly inpressive. You have to see it in order to truely comprehend it's size and it beuity.

  • @greatlakescentral IMPRESSIVE. Not "inpressive" dumbfuck.
