  • Unkai (雲海) means "Cloud sea"

  • STILL AWAIT AXELAY 2!!

  • WOOOOOW MY CHILDHOOD OH MY GOD ;-)

  • That weird offbeat bass note in the buildup always throws me off

  • Thanks for the Informations and Details of the Composer and the Gamemusic! it sounds interessting and...who could know that? Not everybody!

And yes, the First stage Music is amazing. Like the Finalstage music!

  • This game has the best soundtrack on the SNES.

Not just because it's expertly composed and fully utilises the SNES sound chip - a lot of games do that.

But where other games lack in comparison to Axelay is that Axelay's soundtrack EVOLVES over time in accordance to your position in the stage and the game as a whole. It perfectly fits what is happening on the screen, creating a harmony between the gameplay and music, which is fucking amazing. Never have I seen any other game do this.

  • cant post the link here, the song Musicatto by Kansas sounds like this the first minute or so!! check it out!!!

  • I love this game ,great music! listen to this from Kansas its kind of similar, Axelay has the best music along with Contra 3 !! check out the link

  • 1st of all: These kind of games they dont make any more. The normal level of this game is already fairly hard. I have this game for 12 years and I still cant complete the game. Which makes this game epic considering most games out there you can complete easily on normal difficulty. This one is very challenging. 2nd: the music is just good, no lame rappers or Avrils to hear when you play. Its got a great tune. Konami rocks!

  • My favorite song of this game. Great feeling to it.

  • I still can't get past level 3. -_-

  • Holy Fuck how awesome would a HD Lava Level be ? =]

  • @samhain81 better yet, re-release Axelay as a 3D Classic for the 3DS. i'm sure it would take the effects beyond their limits.

  • This is hands down of of the best tunes ever composed for a shmup.

Classic, it makes me want to go play the game again, like, right now!

  • Konami proved that excellent Video game music is the BUTTER on the bread!!! ESSENTIAL!!

  • @KRAFTWERK2K6 Music is so important. It's funny for something called a "video" game that audio is such a major factor, but still. There were a few companies that had the cream of the musical crop all throughout the SNES era: Nintendo (obviously), Capcom, Konami, SquareSoft, and Enix/Quintet (Actraiser... 'nuff said) had good music almost across the board, and there were a few other gems from smaller companies as well.

  • God when I got this game it looked so awesome. I felt the tingling in my fingers as I put it in my Super nes. I turned on the power, and the epic battle for the good of mankind began.

  • i still got this game...played the hell out of it back in the day. the music oh my gosh the music. hell of a sound chip on the SNES. think i'll play this, Pocky and Rocky, and Contra 3 this weekend just to take me back to the good ol' days.

  • This game was awesome for many things, but the music IMO is one of the main reasons I hold it in such high.

  • This ,Contra 3, Thunder force III , Revenge of Shinobi and Donkey Kong Country & Strider must be the all time greatest soundtracks ever released on 16 bit consoles.

Love this song so much i learned it on Guitar!

  • @drumito

Castlevania IV had the best imo....especially The Cave. Now that was some deep stuff.

  • @HerrQuixota SC4 was my favourite ;-) But Super Metroid and FF6 weren't far off in that regard.

  • @AgentDC76

  • There were a few games from the SNES era that I thought had excellent music, and this for sure was up there with the best. In terms of space-shooters, only Super R-Type and R-Type 3 rival this in the music department, and the innovative "derive boss theme from stage theme" approach puts this ahead of both.

I could see this track done by orchestra plus metal band :-p

  • Probably the greatest shmup BGM on the SNES, and a serious Top 10 contender of all times best!

  • this is so old, yet the music shows so much quality and ambition

  • @silverbreath1 I loved the soundtrack in this game. It had very complex arrangements that you really didn't see alot of in 16 bit games back in the day. The Final Fantasy games (2 & 3), Actraiser, and this stand out as my favorites in terms of the quality tunes that the SNES could dish out.

  • @jstephenj Yeah, I hear you. Great passion lies within each track of this game. You gotta give credit to both the snes and the mind behind those songs. Theres not many snes music that catered for many different instruments and hold strong.

  • About an hour ago I played Axelay for the first time and the thing that struck me was the amazing music in the first level.

    Thanks for uploading this.

  • unkai、雲海、a sea of clouds

  • O, how i love this beat.

  • I still say Axelay is the best shooter on either the SNES or Genesis. The only thing that could've made it even better is a couple more levels. Looking back at my old EGMs, there are pics of some different backgrounds. For instance, the first stage had some floating machinery above the clouds, rather than just rocks. I've looked for more info on these prototype levels but have yet to find any.

  • @RyuHayabusa06 That, Contra 3, U.N. Squadron, and ThunderForce 3 for the Genesis rank as my favorite shooters during the 16-bit era. Axelay though, has a special place in my heart because it removed the bad taste left from Konami's lackluster translation of Gradius 3 the year earlier.

  • This could seriously be an anime or a movie. I loved this theme, this and the second stage as well.

  • If I could commission this game's music as a medley with an orchestra I'd start working on it yesterday :-)

  • Yea you're right I notice that too. xD

  • I remember looking at the front artwork of games for hours just because they often were so fucking cool!

  • japanese / super famicom (snes) box artwork just murdered the western shit though.

  • I'll have to say, the Sega Genesis has the coolest synth tunes, but the SNES, by far, has the best sound for that time. The brass and orchestra sounds in games like this and Star Fox can be done a lot better there than in the Genesis. The brass isn't half bad in this tune, and it's truely an epic theme. ^.^

Very cool song none the less.

  • Awesome tune, this is one of my favorites... this has an epic feel to it.

As for the game, it kinda is pretty hard, but fun. In fact, this just came to thought... both this and Gradius III use the same style of text/lettering.

  • they're both made by konami.

  • Sweet soundtrack. My fav fo' sho'.

    Thanks for paying homage.

  • I orderd axelay off ebay last week and it took 5 days to arrive and my ac adaptor broke so I orded another ac adaptor and accidently got the famicom one (which wont fit in my pal snes) so I have to get another ac adaptor which will take about 5 days

  • How unlucky :b

  • actualy its taken 4 weeks so I still cant play axelay

  • i was 2 when i started to play this awesome game.

    IT WAS FUCKING HARD XD

  • @bart78170 damn I feel old... I was 15 when this game came out. And yes, IT WAS FUCKING HARD

  • @fakedad So was I dude, never had such good times playing games as with the SNES. This game fucking rocked.

  • Great !!, excelent music, thanks !!

  • Essa música é bacana, mas eu prefiro a música da segunda fase!

  • Esse som e demaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaisssssssssss!!!!!

  • WOW!!

    Flashbakc to my childhood!

    Thanks for the upload!!

  • this is one of my fav snes songs

  • Thanx for posting this, man! Around the time this came out I believed Last Resort on the Neo Geo was the best shooter around. When I finally got it on CD a few years back I realized how superior Axelay had been.
