The Timmy sounds a lot better to me... it sounds more angry! I think the level needs to be turned up on the timmy for it to be a fair test, The Timmy is definitely smoother.
you need to match them with your guitar and amp. they're not distortion or fuzz that are designed to be played on a clean signal. The Timmy is $200 or more for one. It sounds better than the $800 Klon, which is an overpriced version of about 20 other less expensive overdrives. But a fool and their money will always be parted
a kid came in w/a TS808 complaining that it didnt have enough gain. I keep an Egnater tweaker at my bench, so i can demo a pedal, and the customer will have a reasonable idea of what it will sound like through a Vox. Marshall and fender. I plugged in my ES 345, set the amp to edge of breakup, and kicked on the 808 with a little volume boost, and the dirt at 900, and the kid nearly crapped his pants. He didnt understand that real ODs are not distortion, you play them through a driven amp for
I plugged in an ES 345 I have, turned the amp to the edge of breakup, and kicked on his pedal, and the look on his face was priceless. He didnt understand that an overdrive into a clean (and he was using a solid state), is not going to give you the dirt that you expect. Everyone buys Tscreamers to sound like SRV or E.Johnson, but they forget Stevie and johnson mostly kept the dirt dialed back, and used it to push a plexi, or Dumble, which of course is going to sound great.
Because the tone is so dependant on what you're playing on, and through. Distortions and Fuzzs are easier, because the tend to overwelm the tone of the guitar anyway, but a real overdrive works in tandem with you guitar/amp. I had a kid come in w/a TS808 he wanted mod'd. He said he couldnt get the tone his friend can, i plugged it into an Egnater Tweaker I keep so people can get an ideal of what their pedal will sound like through their amp; be it a fender, vox or marshall.
I build/mod amps and pedals, so I've heard pretty much every overdrive you can mention (except maybe some overseas boutique). I find that you tend to get what you pay for, but in this instance, with the this combination of guitar/amp, the Danelectro sounds better IMO. I own a Timmy, and built a few clones, so i know it's probably the best overdrive on the market, especially for the $. Its really hard to determine what an OD will sound like from clips

dude the Danelectro wasn't even near transparent as timmy, not even close... tons of add highs, even scooped.... btw TIM can be dialled to be more transparent than timmy.... a real transparent shootout would be the TIM and the sparkle drive.... ;)
Timmy is more compressed sounding and lacks midrange hump. The Dano has a mid hump in there that makes it stand out. G Dude - you really gotta demo this stuff with a clean amp. A fender like amp neutral amp.
TIMMY - sounds more transparent, especially on single-note stuff
TRANSPARENT OD - sounds brighter, more gain over all, and more top-end sizzle on chords
*like always, it depends on what other gear you're using, how all of your gear complements/works against each other, what sound you're looking for, and what you're willing to pay.
creating a pedal that everybody wants, making them wait for 6months and hitting them for over $200 is a recipe for a big company to produce a cheap copy cat. Sorry Paul but you should have saw this one coming. The only reason that KLON hasn't been cloned is all that goop he puts on his circuit.
They're really close, but I'd rather scrounge up $70 more to give to the guy who built the circuit and has a family to support. Plus, it sounds just a tad bit better. The Dano is great and all, but I don't feel right buying it when the guy who basically made the pedal still builds and sells his. If he ever decides to quit, I'll gladly buy a dano to put with my Tim and Timmy.
Great Who tone with both pedals.... Timmy is more open (trebly?) so it has a lot to do with Pete Townshend's tone, but this gear definitely is the right bet for anyone interested in soundin' like Who's Hiwatts era.
I really appreciate that you're objective and you make very reliable comparison videos even when you can afford that all hi-end stuff. Your comments in your vids are ballanced and fair. Good job, GMD! I'm waiting for more. ;D
The Dano just rings clearer on the leads, the Timmy is really stuffy. I don't like the Timmy on any clip I've heard. I have the money to spend on gear but I wouldn't wait for anything more than a few weeks. I can see picking up a TOD-1 just to check it out. Cool demo
You can't set them up the same by using the same knob positions. The Danelectro has the pots wired in reverse and different taper pots.. giving the impression that they sound much more different than they actually do.
Set correctly and with the Timmy clipping set to the symmetrical, less compressed setting, they will sound pretty much identical.
The Danelectro doesn't have the clipping choices of the Timmy, although the new model coming out apparently does.
Both pedals sounded pretty good. I was surprized at how good the Dano sounded. I made the mistake of buying a Dano Distortion and it sounds like crap. I snagged me a Dano Transparent OD because they may be discontinued/changed and prices will go up.

The sound quality is a bit poor, and on top of that we can't be sure that their EQs were set up to give as similar a sound as possible.
From the few things I can guess from what I am hearing, The Timmy sounds fuller and less shrill, but the Dano, even though a bit trebly, seems to hit a very sweet spot.
I am guessing that all the minus points come from people who believe the sound quality is pristine, that it comes from a nice mic into a nice preamp into a nice recorder, and that it can also serve as a DECENT means of forming a conclusion. Congrats.
I hate the style of Danelectro pedals and most of the reviews I've read about them tend to be negative. Of course, having said that, I should probably scoop up as many as I can since I like trying the cheap, trashy stuff and making strange noises.
This pedal sounds pretty decent though. Much better than I was expecting from a Dano pedal. However, I do think the Timmy sounds better.
There's no comparison here.. The Timmy is obviously better..

i think you guys are nuts, the best OD pedals out there are the Timmy, the Signa Drive and pretty much anything Sean Michael (Lovepedal) makes!

Dano wins... I'll take the other $250 that the Timmy goes for and buy groceries for the rest of the month.
I'm enjoying mine.
