By far the greatest entrance music of any movie ever made,the three perfectly timed drum beats with the addition of that creepy flute sound makes for a truly prehistoric sounding intro
@semperfi2o10 The intro is definitely unique, but nobody really KNOWS what prehistoric sounds would be like, so John Williams, a brilliant composer, has the advantage of us knowing what the film is about, thus he can just suggest and let our imaginations take over. The three low-resonance one-pitch single kettledrum (timpano plus bass viol?) beats could be more timpani with slightly different pitches, timing and/or beats and still sound just as ominous with or without the creepy woodwind sound.
@PolishMartian well i suppose that your right in the sense that nobody truly knows what prehistoric sounds are actually like but I think the reason why this music so appropriately fitting for this movie is because it has a that jungle feel to it.jungle sound + dinosaurs is a winning combination. Its interesting how much more ominous and terrifying john williams Lost World music is compared to this first films more majestic operatic score
@semperfi2o10 I agree that it has a jungle feel to it and there were a lot of steamy jungles in the Jurassic Period (cold-blooded reptiles thrive better in warm climates), so that would make it more appropriate for dinosaurs. I haven't listened to enough YouTube Jurassic Park video soundtracks and it's been a long time since I saw the films, but I believe you're right about the first film's music being more majestic and the Lost World's being more ominous. This intro, however, is ominous!
@brainy1130 Yes, I enjoyed the Jurassic Park film scores immensely, but John Williams seems to do his best work when he works with Steven Spielberg and/or George Lucas. I could listen to his movie (and some other) music all day – not quite 24/7 – and I have more or less done so on several occasions. Awesome, yes!
@PolishMartian Yes, I would say that John Williams is doing his best for what I suppose I would call "the best movies", because I would say that most of my favorite movies that touched my heart were made by Steven Spielberg and George Lucas. For this reason I call John Williams an amazing composer and a great artist in the studies of music.
@mohican19831 I would agree with you that John Williams is the best composer in the last 40 years or so, but without listening to many days of other composers' music, I can't even definitely say he's the best film score composer ever. However, if he isn't, he'd be in the top 3.. "Star Wars" is still the American Film Institute's highest-ranked movie score in history. HOWEVER, compared with some of the best classical music composers, I'd have to rank him slightly lower – but still outstanding!
Totally sets the mood for the movie. It even sounds like it was filmed in the jungles or something. It works amazinglly well with the big picture of the movie.
Does anyone know what chord this is??? It sounds like the transition chord in LCD Soundsystem's "Sound of Silver" but I can't find sheet music of either one. HALP!
@irkeysersoze It's a polychord of Em7 and F#. The notes are (from lowest to highest) - E, B, G in the left hand - D, E, F#, G, A#, C# in the right.
The tonality is B harmonic minor.
The sound at 0:26 is a shakuhachi, played Masakazu Yoshizawa. It's a Japanese bamboo flute. You can also hear it in Images, Empire of the Sun, The Lost World, and Memoirs of a Geisha.
@RogueRotting360 (and @semperfi2o10) Thanks for most of the music/sound info here, which I missed seeing earlier. I started another reply to semperfi2o10 two weeks ago, but IE-8 it. So, the "creepy flute sound" sounded like an actual WOOD (not metal) woodwind and I'd heard of a shakuhachi before, but didn't recognize it here. I found that info in another article later, but where did you find out about the vocal polychord? I hadn't tried to guess it earlier and couldn't find it elsewhere later.
@PolishMartian (and @RogueRotting360 and @semperfi2o10) Your polychord info seems accurate, despite my diminishing music skills, because I heard or see the notes of Em7-9 (counting F#), Bm and F# chords; however, I can't play 6 notes in the right hand now.
After much replaying, I still thought the drumbeat sounds could be a kettledrum and/or low-frequency string (cello or bass), but according to another article, it's electronically-distorted thumps of a Japanese drum, so it fooled me.
This is why the 3rd movie sucked. These movies are supposed to have elements of horror and suspense.. Not just cheesy adventure/action. Hopefully the fourth is alot darker and scarier.

This is my fav "theme" within Jurassic Park, for me it catches everything about the film, I think it is a stroke of genius, fills me with anxiety but a sense of wonder, its perfect.
@IDante1Savage ithink so to a tottly agree beause this theme just is alsome wen makes thos sounds it just blurs ur mind about dinosaurs and how epic and badass thyere are
