I idolized Tyson and defended him as if he was indestructible, (I still believe he would have been able to beat Holyfield and Lewis before jail though) but he was not unbeatable. We just want our favorite fighters to win every time. To be honest, The fight in this video is better than any Klitschko fight (except Vitali vs Lewis) I've ever seen.
Watching this again, I'm reminded of how great it was, and how each guy fought until the last possible second. If I were judging, I would have given Norton the decision, but only because he was the champ going in.
I saw this fight when it occurred and I still think that it ranks as the best fight in boxing. Ken Norton won in my view. Larry had to be taken out in a stretcher.
This fight was extremely close, to me Norton won though.. Shows how great Holmes was in comparison with Ali, by no means there was no comparison. Holmes was a fine champion; great left jab and heart. Ali was something else, in his prime, he would have beaten Holmes to a pulp.
I think prime Norton would beat Holmes. Norton said that Ali was better. Norton: Hitting Ali in the body or on the arms was like hitting a piece of cement.

1. Corrie Sanders was a huuge talent with 38 wins and 2 losses before he faced wladimir. He would have given any great HW of the past a hell of a fight with chances of winning!
2. Lamon Brewster also a huge talent 29 wins 2 losses when he fought Wladimir. Back then Wladimir took risks and had problems with agressive fighters
3. Ross Purity did not have a great record, but back then he was a contender and fought an amazing fight..
@kevham09 Conclusion: Wladimir's losses came from very talented fighters with agressive fighting styles. Wladimir has obviously grown and learned a lot from his tough losses, because he does not lose anymore :) not even a round.. Vitali is just in a league of his own.

@MrDiscernment2011 exactly, all the advanced training is bullshit. boxing training has developed so little over time because it doesnt have to. the guys now lift heavy weights and are getting too heavy. heavier isnt better and now guys come in as heavy as possibel unlike the old fighters who came in as light as possible so they could move quicker and fight longer. i personally think they dont do enough running or they dont take the training serious enough
@messier991102 I agree, the roadwork is a must. All of those heavy weight excercise fatigues the muscles. It seems like trainers have guys doing soo many plyometric excercises and fancy stuff, they don't focus in on the basics and try to make weight.

I didn't rate Larry Holmes as an all time great before I saw this fight. He is, obviously is, up there with anybody. Some chin, for the heavy punching Norton. Both the guys hit the other with their best. Alas, we don't see such exciting heavyweight boxing now. It's too defensive and boxers hardly throw.
a forgotten gem of a fight- one of the best in heavyweight history. also totally unique in that it WASN'T on closed circuit, but LIVE on ABC i believe. that 15th was just incredible.

Boy....there were some great fights during that time. Boxing has gone so down hill especially in the HW division. Both of these men would wipe out anyother era in that weightclass, only men that could have beaten these guys were Foreman, Ali and maybe Frazier, no other men in history could have beaten them.
Larry Holmes 1978-82 was unbeatable.....most underrated heavyweight champion ever. 22 straight defenses. Frankly he's top 5 all time easy imo and few can prove me wrong on that.
The greatest 15th round of any fight I've ever seen. Easily one of the 10 best rounds in boxing history. You can see both men leave their soul in the ring. That's when you know two fighters are warriors. When they don't care if they die as long as they win the fight.
I remember watching this fight. I'm 46 and still haven't seen a better fight ever. Ali-Frazier III was good but not this good. Mathew Saad Muhammad and the other light heavies in the late 70's had some classics but this was the best.

holmes didn't avoid anyone. he didn't make the matches. he did what he was told. don king controlled him bad. he is one of the best heavyweights. he even toyed around with ali, when he was his sparring partner.

I idolized Tyson and defended him as if he was indestructible, (I still believe he would have been able to beat Holyfield and Lewis before jail though) but he was not unbeatable. I saw this fight when it occurred and I still think that it ranks as the best fight in boxing. Ken Norton won in my view. Larry had to be taken out in a stretcher.

This fight was extremely close, to me Norton won though.. Shows how great Holmes was in comparison with Ali, by no means there was no comparison. Holmes was a fine champion; great left jab and heart. Ali was something else, in his prime, he would have beaten Holmes to a pulp.

3. Ross Purity did not have a great record, but back then he was a contender and fought an amazing fight..

I didn't rate Larry Holmes as an all time great before I saw this fight. He is, obviously is, up there with anybody. Some chin, for the heavy punching Norton. Both the guys hit the other with their best. Alas, we don't see such exciting heavyweight boxing now. It's too defensive and boxers hardly throw.

The greatest 15th round of any fight I've ever seen. Easily one of the 10 best rounds in boxing history. You can see both men leave their soul in the ring. That's when you know two fighters are warriors. When they don't care if they die as long as they win the fight.
