alright so i have a 84 monte carlo had a 305 in it i just blew the bottom end do to the fact it has vortec heads comp 280 670 avenger carb victor intake with custom work almost like airgap hooker headers flowmaster 40. so im building a 400sbc what kinda of power am i looking at if i threw that top from the 305 on the 400? should i go with a bigger cam? this is going to be my first 400 so i dont really know how to get the best performance out of it. i want it for street btw all reply r welcome
@MrVicarious666 I was going to build a similiar combo. With a .030" 400 sbc, 9.5:1 compression, Stock vortec heads(with supporting mods for higher lift cams) hydraulic Comp 280H cam with 230@.050 duration and .480 lift, 1.5 ratio roller rockers, RPM air gap intake, 750 holley carb, 1 5/8" long tube headers with 3.0" collectors..
@MrVicarious666 Desktop dyno shows 440HP 525 ft lbs of torque.. Peak HP @ 5500rpm and peak torque @ 4500rpm. Would produce monster torque, around 470 ft lbs at 2200 rpm Can you Say BURNOUT?!?!
I say build that combo, but do NOT use the victor jr intake.. Its made for HIGH rpm racing, not the motor you're building.. Get the edelbrock RPM AIR GAP, its a a dual plane intake and a much better intake for your application.... That combo will make one hell of a street motor
@Badchevee1 well the 400 is done and in the monte. it was a fun build but more fun tearing it up through my town. i had to modify the valve covers to the airgap manifold. it wouldnt lay flush but it all worked out fine. im now in the process of choosing a transmission and rear. i dont want to put another hole in my pocket what would be the best way to get them hard launches without spending a ton
No he did not use a key. For the ppl wondering, the older cars didnt need the key after being unlocked. Once the ignition is past "lock" position the key is able to be removed and started. but once the ignition is set back to "Lock" it requires key to unlock it and be started
Fixin to get a 76 Camaro with a 400 small block and a 350 turbo hydramatic tranny. stock they push out 265 hp not sure about torque though. beautiful car
Uh, hate to break it to you, but a stock 400 sbc does not make 265 hp stock. Chevrolet made two versions rated at 165hp and another at 180 hp. They were made during the mid seventies while the gas crunch was going on, and never made much power. They did have tons of low end torque. But not much horsepower. My old 79 Camaro RS had a 400 in it, and it was all torque.
Actually Bigchief the first year Chevy made a 400 SB was in 1970 and it did make 265hp, it also cranked out 400ftlbs of torque at 1600 or 1800 rpm... it had a 4 bolt main.
Did t sell cause if it didn't I'll buy it. And we're is it located. I couldn't hear it at all

Not all 400's push 265 hp. most make between 165 to 180. They have tons of torque, though.
BigChief427 2 years ago
im sure its not broken, just he didnt turn the key all the way back to lock it. 5000 tho. crazy high.
jregamey 2 years ago
True, those old 70's cars, you could take the key out with it 1/2- way turned, all those old cars could do that.

Can you take some vid shots underneath, floors, rockers, etc? How rusty is it underneath?
Thanks,
