It really varies from area to area. Some officers have to attend a police academy, others are hired off the street and are handed a pair of keys to the truck and not much else. Most are somewhere in between those two extremes. Any animal handling skills are good. We've had several people who volunteered at shelters or worked as a vet tech prior to becoming an officer, others had no real animal handling skills at all, which isn't always bad, we can teach them from scratch the way we do things.

First thing you do is cover the deers head with a towel. Standing over it and talking, waving your hands, etc completely freaks them out. Using your trucks tire jack separates the bars and you can easily lift the deer out. Time was of the essence here, she could of broken her hips trying to escape from the three people closing in on her. Just for future deer rescues, I had to put in my 2 cents.

I mention using a tire jack in my video info, not only that if this deer ran into the yard, it would be trapped. As far as what is the first thing to do, the first thing we do is to assess the situation. If the deer had injuries that were severe enough, our policy is to put it down. I have rescued dozens of deer like this over the past 6+ years, it happens all the time here, and I've never had one break their hips, ever. We did cover the deer and successfully rescued it, job well done I say.

Reminds me of a rabbit I had stuck in a fence all the way past its elbows - much smaller problem of course - makes you wonder how the critter wiggled its way that far in.

(I did the same thing, put a cloth around its head and pushed it back the way it had come in. The rabbit was ok too.)

i had the same thing happen with a deer trapped in an iron fence here. luckily a neighbor had a metal bending tool and he popped the deer right out! thanks for these realistic a.c. videos.
