Where I live it is tough to find JHP for my 9mm. I hate having FMJ for a home defense load. I need to make a road trip for ammo somewhere. Blasted IL.....
Thanks, I appreciate the feedback! I wish I had a highspeed camera so I could capture it "Mythbusters" style but I don't have the Hollywood Budget. I'm planning to do more simillar videos with the same comparison with some rifle rounds as well.
Both of these bullets were fired at about the same velocity. The difference between an FMJ and a JHP is the way that the energy is released upon impact with a target. An FMJ fired at a fluid target like a bottle full or water or piece of flesh will tend to pass right through the target without releasing much energy i.e. it will punch a small hole straight through. When a JHP hits the same target the hollow point on the tip of the bullet cause the bullet to expand and release more energy
Actually most body armor will stop most handgun rounds. When it comes to rifle rounds, it doesn't really matter what type of bullet you use, all of them will usually penetrate all but hard ceramic plate body armor. You're typically better off with JHP's because if you hit the BG anywhere outside of the body armor it will do more damage. Also if you miss, a JHP will be less likely to ricochet or penetrate an exterior wall and hit a bystander.
I know that hollow points do more damage, but im pretty sure a 9mm fmj to the chest will stop most people.

I'm pretty sure that 9mm 115 gr FMJ will defeat most low level body armor. Anyone verify or deny this?
