Low and behold, modern science. Meld the behavior of Lions, with a slight look and feel of hyena clans, add sabers and teach it as fact. They've even placed it in a grassy african landscape- I guess it sales better that way. Nevermind the fact that every indication suggests smilodon was more like the lynx genus than anything.
I'd really like to find the evidence that points to smilodon living in groups like lions, especially since most cats are very anti-social in that respect. (Im not doubting it, but I would love to read the research on it)
@lost2darkness skeletons of seriously injured smilidons with certian stress fractures that had healed(such as shin fractures)that would have probably meant death to a solitary animal have been discovered. this suggests they were in some way helped by other animals to survive whilst crippled -they wouldnt have been able to run after prey for instance-indicating living in goups.
Prehistoric Predators claims that the Smilodon Fatalis's sabre teeth were proned to breaking, if used incorrectly such as being shook from side to side while grabbing prey or prehaps even in battle with another sabre tooth. Considering the teeth were fragile when used in a fight or hunting prey and could easily lose a tooth, saying that they couldn't survive without one is like saying without the Christian Chuch we'd all die. This is only a simulator of what they MAY have looked like by the way.
@Zalariah they werent used in the same way as a lions, one way you can tell this is from the skeleton-it was built literally like a bear in terms of the bone structure and strength. considering the prey it would hunt and the build of the animal, it would have most likely wrestled its prey to the ground and used the teeth to almost instantly kill its prey by driving them into its neck once the target was subdued. wear and tear on skeletons is consistent with this sort of behaviour.
These Smilodons are so unrealistic. First off, they're barely furry, look more like big dogs and , in reality, if a big cat breaks teeth, it's a near 100 percent death sentence.
@Psythr666 Very few big cats are legitimately furry (the exception being a male lion due to it's mane) Smilodon physiology was similar to that of big dogs too.
By the way, a sabre-toothed cat's teeth weren't the only teeth it had. I could still survive with just one sabre tooth.
I really liked this reconstruction of Smilodon's life although it probably wasn't the way they really lived. The pride system was based on modern lions. Males are bigger and stronger than females so they take over a pride and protect it whereas females hunt. In Smilodon, there's no evdence of sexual dimorphism so they probably didn't live in prides. There is, on the other hand, lot's of evidence that they lived and hunted in packs.
This episode had one major lie-- Smilodon didn't cause the extinction of the terror birds in south america. In fact, they were already gone by the time saber-toothed cats arrived from north america.. THis whole series blatantly lied about several aspects of evolution... It had some neat animation though.. But they seemed to have purposely left out various species.. and didn't put feathery integument on the dromaeosaurids.. Regardless, I'm tired of TV bullshitting. lol
maybe im missing something because i dont follow you. you do realise those things became extinct like 10,000 years ago right? and you were expecting a real video of them? jackass
@edusideoli71 They lived in North and South America, they lived at the beginning of the early Pleistocene which was about 1.6million years ago and died out about 10,000 years ago. The Smilodon stood about 4ft at the shoulder, just over 8ft in length and the largest individuals possibly weighed over 500kg or about (1,100 lbs.) It was about 2ft shorter than a modern day male African Lion, but it weighed twice as much.
lol, believe me - there were tigers around when s.fatalis, s.populator lived. Tigers have been around for about 1,5 million years (when they share a common ancestor witch lions, I think). S.Fatalis went extinct about 10 000 years ago. The Panthera and the Smilodon genus are considered wery distant cousins
Tigers evolved in Asia, otjher panthera in Africa and Europe. Smilodon lived only in the Americas. Smilodons ancestors, Homotherium and Machairodont, lived on all the continents except Australia and Antarctica.
There is a phylogenic tree in text form in wikipedia, "Felidae".
What I find ridiculous is how the females retreat because "their only concern is to protect their offpsring." Yeah, but if Halftooth looses the fight, the new ruling cats will take over and kill their offspring; then get them pregnant with their own. That's what Halftooth did 3 years before right? C'mon ladies, think ahead!

according to my knowledge, tigers evolved from smilodon fatalis and smilodon populater, coz there were'nt any tigers alive when smilodons lived.
this computerised image of smilodon populater is inaccurate, coz smilodon populater was very fat and musculer and looked more like a bear.
