@Lanidrac92 I completely agree. Even in the heat of virtuosity, Kissin never ever forgets the music and making it sing in a special way unique to him. Yuja's doesn't even reach a quarter as expressively deep as Kissin's fabulous interpretation here. Especially amazing, too, since Kissin was only about 18 or 19 here...
@chobeethaninov you may or may not be right, but you two are comparing professional recording quality (this one) with an amateur camcorder (Yuja's). Please people, if you feel the need to compare at all (which I don't see why), at least make it a fair comparison, such as between two studio recordings or two live professional recordings, or even two live amateur camcorders. Trust me, these things make a HUGE subconscious difference in your emotional preference.
@trtnec Actually, I am comparing Evgeny's here to Yuja's performance at the Verbier which was expertly and professionally filmed by the Medici TV. Also, if you close your eyes and just listen, there's an obvious difference.
Fine performance by the young Kissin. He somewhat lacks power and drama in few moments, but overall this is great musicianship and beautiful sense for singing.
@korlock3000: Yes, he is playing octaves in both left and right hand. In the original Schubert accompaniment, the vouch takes the lead. In this virtuosic transcription of Liszt, it's all up to the pianist, and Liszt deliberately amplifies the drama and pathos. It's incredibly technically demanding, but Kissin can play anything with ease.
Well i saw yuja, and i have to say that she is hot, but i afraid that kissing's playing sounds better, maybe he could be faster if that were his porpuse.
@LordHettrick well i dunno. I mean i know its written as octaves, but thats insanely fast, and it sounds like the Schubert version with voice. In that one, you don't play it as an octave.
I really love Kissin performances, but I don't like this one. Is too fast. I like Jorge Bolet much more... Probably Horowits is better too. This isn't one of the best from Evgeny. He is great tough.
Kissin plays the left-hand ascending scale pattern better than anyone (his phrasing is absolutely correct), but the best all-time performance of this piece is Lazaar Berman.
Yuja Wang plays only faster, I wouldn´t ever say "better", Evgeny Kissin understand all about this story, every character plays wonderfull following the perfect moment from the story, etc, Wang plays only fast and virtuoso but she seems not to understand in every moment what happen in this piece.
Very well said. Listen to Wang's Erlkonig at her Verbier concert yesterday. Also her Gretchen compared to Kissin(also on UTube). Unfortunately, the sound isn't of comparable to Medici's, but I have heard him play both live, and on CD. There is no comparison between the depth of musical understanding between the two, as well as just comprehensive overall musical talent, although both play the spots off the piano. Wang seems shallow and perfunctory by comparison.
I love Evgeny Kissin's interpretation of this piece. Yes, more than Yuja Wang's although she plays with her body which I wished Kissin would do much more.
What relief for the hands when the Erlkönig begins speaking, even accompanying this song, one's hands threaten to cramp up. ..... What an extraordinary performance of this work!
The temptation is to be preoccupied by the challenging technicalities of this piece. However, Kissin overcomes this and goes on to produce a supreme artistic masterwork. Listen to the varieties of shading and nuances that are sensitive to the words and moods of the text. Kissin is a genius.
@KevinBeethoven I could care less about how well I play the piano, in fact I just made that comment to see how offended people would get, and so far I think i was pretty successful.
@cpanati , did you know that it was also very difficult for Schubert himself?! the first time he played it for some schoolboys , they cried out to him to repeat it for 3 times! 3rd time he did not play triplets!!! he said because it is to difficult for him! it needs a virtuoso! to me Schubert is a great composer, and Liszt not more than a virtuoso and show-man!
The Part beginning at 1:34 was the most difficult for me :s
you need big hands although these chords are rolled ...
