I don't know if it was because i did this but after i did this (and it worked) i disconnected the external HDD and connected it to my PS3. Nothing showed up so i connected it back to my computer. My computer found it but it does not run autorun or show up on My Computer. I feel like i'v tried everything but i have to fix it because i have important documents in there. Please help!!!! Thanks :)
@FreeCompConsultant i got problem,it say "Windows found errors on the disk, but will not fix them because disk checking was run without the /F (fix) parameter.
@TheRttleSNK run with /F, then I always answer Y to convert lost chains. Usually I just delete them afterward but only after ensuring they don't look meaningful.
This helped me so so much, My 5GB file couldn't be copied to the usb because it was too large (8GB USB) but converting it to NTFS did the job, thanks dude, simple but helpful.
mine says "this drive is dirty and cannot be converted. You will need to clear the dirty bit on this drive by dunning CHKDSK /F or allowing AUTOCHK to run on it the next time you reboot."
when i run it, it says that "chkdsk cannot run because this volume is in use by another process. would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? y/n
i press y and restart my computer but nothing happens
@BMWboy6 You have to match whatever the drive has for a label. If you do a directory of C: in a DOS box, it will tell you "Volume in drive C..." followed by the label info, usually all upper case. It may have no label.
You can set the label easily by right clicking the drive in My Computer, selecting properties and changing the label in the box at the top
hey man it says to me when i type FS/NTFS: access denied as you do not have sufficient privileges. you have to invoke this utility running in elevated mode.
I've got a Western Digital "931GB E-book" with only 16GB free space. How can I check if 16GB is sufficient for "conversion process" before running CONVERT command?
I have a decade of data saved and no other drive to Backup first. Taking a 'Chance' is not an option for me. Will my drive take significantly longer to convert to NTFS from FAT32? Whats the safest way to go about the conversion process?
Need NTFS format for storing files larger than 4GB.
@ronisize420 If taking a chance is not an option, please don't. I have never lost any data doing this but I ALWAYS had important data backed up just in case.
Backup is cheap. If nothing else, get a free account for your most important couple of gig of data. Find SugarSync 5GB free account at OnlineBackupSpot(dot)com
"Convert cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Convert may run if this volume is dismounted first. ALL OPENED HANDLES TO THIS VOLUME WOULD THEN BE INVALID. Would you like to force a dismount on this volume? (Y/N)" I'm running an illegitiment copy of windows xp with SP2. I have a 160 gig drive on FAT32. What does this error mean and what should i do? Please help
@Haluciniram I have never lost data doing this, but if you read the comments below it might seem others think they may have. I ALWAYS recommend a FULL BACKUP before doing this JUST IN CASE.
I tried to convert but it says that convert is stopped couse I don't have the rights to do so. I'm already adminstor of computer and problem is still there.
@XLUpLoaderXL Well, a COMPLETE backup is ALWAYS BEST; but, if you can replace the operating system and programs from original CDs then at least backup any data that is important to you first, just in case. You SHOULDN'T lose any data in the conversion, but I prefer to be safe than sorry.

Thanks very much for this informative clip. I converted and lost a lot data that was on FAT 32. Would you know if there is a way of recovering my data?
@shamalbaba Are you saying that you converted from FAT32 to NTSB and then some data was missing? I have never heard of that happening before, but nonetheless I do always recommend a backup first.
Thanks v. much for your reply. I had to convert from Fat32 to NTFS because I had to copy a Windows backup file of 26GB. Now all my data is missing on the (external) drive that I converted. I was wondering if there is a way of getting my data back. Thanks.
@FreeCompConsultant well I formated my HDD to NTFS from FAT32 so I can copy HD movies and now because of that my device (I'm not sure how it's called) which allows me to watch movies, pictures and music on TV won't recognize HDD in NTFS format
Thanks, it worked, and you explained it well. You also answered my major question about whether converting from FAT 32 to NTFS would delete my files (it doesn't). Very nicely explained.
Thank you! I am trying to upgrade to Win 7 and have a huge amount of files on an external drive, but my main drive C is too tiny to take all the files. @DaansMontages As mentioned in the video, I have never seen data loss doing conversion. That said, I would never be comfortable doing a conversion without a backup of all important data.
