The elder is a good album. And I agree , If it were say , a Rush release it would have been considerd Great. Kiss just shot themselves in the foot going teenie pop. Probably Gene's fault!
One of the best things about this live recording is that they are using Marshalls where I noticed on their reuion tours they used tinny sounding Hiwats, big difference in sound. Marshalls rule and I am not a paid endorser of Marshalls
@PolyQuasi The only spinal tap aspect is they played it with make up, the Elder with the non-makeup \non-teen-booper KiSS or if released by Rush, Savatage etc would have been considered of the best progressive metal recordings of all time
@sjdss Ace probably hated this equally for financial reasons. E.g., you mention Disco/Dance Music artist, Kylie Minogue, as one of your favorites. After borrowing a couple of her cds in the library, I was amazed at some of the progressive material on them, BUT if she was to put out an entire recording of such material, it would tank as the majority of her fans want to hear the her light disco/dance music.
Same with KISS, especially this came out in their teen bopper period with disco material
The Elder is one of the best KISS recordings ever, should have been released in the non-makeup period where the progressive metal recording would have be appreciated instead of released in their teenybobber days
Badass song! I do believe this song indirectly influenced me to be a drummer. I remember Eric Carr rockin' on this one. In 1983, Rick Allen and Nicko McBrain kicked me in the ass, the Vinny Appice, Tommy Aldridge, Simon Wiright, Tommy Lee, Lar Ulrich, etc.
@fortheloveoftunes I`d put Asylum up there as the worst KISS album ever . As every KISS album came out I would play it all the time for a week But Aslylum was so dire I played it twice and have never listened to it since.
@guitarace1965 Ace hated this album. His heart was not in it, an he has stated that this album and the recording experience made him quit the band. This could be a form of self-protection, as I am certain Gene and Paul have a differing version. In either case, the album had a few really good songs on it.
This album has a bad rep,but I think it's actually quite good, certainly better than "Dynasty" or "Unmasked" IMO. Why Simmons,Stanley,Frehley and Ezrin continue to shit on it to this day is beyond me.
I don't think that the Elder was such a horrible album...it's way better than Unmasked and it's the first album with my favorite drummer of all time Eric Carr. He was way much better than Peter Criss. With Eric's arrival you can see the double bass drums, he was a lot more powerful drummer, than Peter. It was such a joy to watch him in action.
I love The Elder and especially this song done live rocks out...but if you look at the audience there is no fist pumping or people standing....and the applause at the end...I wonder if Gene and Paul were wondering if they had made the right decision.
@GREGMCKEE I think they were (still are?) more interested in keeping the band look like a comic book representation than anything. You can notice a few things similar to the powerful music of Creatures in this, but sounding much less "pop" and more raw. Kiss much probably wasn't supposed to sound "intelligent" (wiser?) like in/an Elder... Ace doesn't sound his best though but I'd rather listen to this than anything on Animalize or something.
this is one of there heaviest songs, great song, i love aces solo as well, when he looks to the side and ques the soundman to turn him up for his solo, and his guitar sounds godlike,
Even the band members hated this album. The music isn't bad- but it's contrived to say the least. Even here, it's like they're trying to be something they are not, and they know it.
This was technically Ace's last live performance of sorts, I guess.. since everything after this was lip syncing/playback and he didn't even wanna learn how the songs went. The wikipedia article about Ace says his last performance (interview) with the band was in early 1983 on mtv!! Can anyone confirm this? Cause I can't find it or any evidence of it. @starionpatrol Ace last shows with Kiss was during the Creatures album. He just did some tv promo shows for the album he was officially out by 82 the end of the casablanca deal and the new contract,no make up, with Mercury shifted power to Gene.
@rb7magnetico Yeah, but those were all lip-synced performances. This is the last time he actually played for real, thus "technically" ;) Ace wouldn't have been right for the band around the time they unmasked. In terms of sound, vinnie was the perfect replacement, I guess. Imagine ace and peter being in the lick it up video :p Kiss are a bunch of weird looking dudes.. apart from Eric Carr :p
Yeah, the Wiki info is incorrect, as far as that MTV appearance occuring in 1983. It was around October of '82; KISS revealed the tank stage, Gene blew fire, and they answered questions. A very small clip of that appearance can be seen at the very beginning of one of the Nip Tuck episodes. I have no clue as to why; I just remember shots of old '70's - 80's tv shows in a montage at the beginning of whatever episode that was. And boom, there was a clip of that KISS press conference.

greatest kiss albums 1.Destroyer 2.Dynasty 3.Kiss 4.Dressed To Kill 5.Love Gun 6.Hotter Than Hell 7.Revenge 8.Creatures Of The Night 9.The Elder 10.Unmasked
They had something to prove that night. You can see it in their performance and at the end of the song. KISS were on the brink at this stage of their career and were becoming the subject of ridicule as well as being simply ignored. They had something to prove on national T.V., and they delivered!
On the commentary of Kissology 2 Paul Stanley recalled that prior to this performance people were asking him what it was like to be on a sinking ship. He told the others and they were just as pissed off as he was and went "Oh we'll show them."
RE lip sync. I'm a long term fan of Kiss I've listened to em since around 82 and pretty much seen and heard everything that's availible on vinyl or vid including dozens of bootlegs and I can say with confidence that paul stanley is a terrible live singer.great performer and dynamite on stage but sing he can not, just check out the Kiss exposed vid when they are talking about ace frehley and bursts into an inpromptu rendition of christine 16 and thats all the eveidence you need. KISS ROCK!!!!!
I never pay gene compliments, he such a tosser .but his falsetto is fantastic .we hardly ever get to hear it .he uses a bit on his solo album and its not far of roger taylor
Yo, you've obviously never seen KISS live. Paul Stanley is one of the best underrated vocalists ever. For you to say that this was all lip-synched, shows not only your young age but also your ignorance. Back then, nobody lip-synched, fag!
The Elder was such a huge album. Creatures of the Night was also a big album.Thoes were my KISS yrs .I was 7 .KISS was my band and still is.Carr could play them drum's
I remember wondering what was going on with them during that era,..the big concept album (that was really well done), but nothing to support it, no movie, no flashy KISS lights, (no platforms),..what was going on ?
but it wasnt long after this they shed their makeup and things got real dismal
Someone needs to sue the S.O.B. that talked Paul into wearing that LOVERBOY headband! Another thing I could never understand is why
they cut their hair shorter during a time when they made some of their heaviest music.
Still , ya can't say enough good things about Ace in this performance-a great guitarist who was in rare form on this night. Eric Carr was none too shabby either.
kiss was a glam hard rock band not a dance pop band thats when they started sucking in 75/76! if i want to hear dance music i listen to kylie minogue not KISS! is i want to hear ballads i listen to SADE not KISS! when i want to hear kick in that balls rnr i listen to 73-74 KISS! be who you are!

The Elder was such a huge album. Creatures of the Night was also a big album.Thoes were my KISS yrs .I was 7 .KISS was my band and still is.Carr could play them drum's
floortom123 3 years ago
Carr could always play the drums, if that's what you mean... It took a 10kg-balls drummer like Singer to replace him...

awesome vid !
I remember wondering what was going on with them during that era,..the big concept album (that was really well done), but nothing to support it, no movie, no flashy KISS lights, (no platforms),..what was going on ?
but it wasnt long after this they shed their makeup and things got real dismal
thanx for posting !

Yeach, this is original performance, but remastered and published earlier by KISSVISION, not KISSology group.

Ha awsome!
Is this the origonal one and not the one of KISSOLOGY 2?
