  • "Night beat"... what did that even mean, really? lol

  • ken and christine ftw!

  • Christine Bentley is amazing even after all these years

  • Christine Bentley is amazing even after all these years

  • LOL wow I have been watching these two since I was a little girl. Christine still looks amazing so does Ken!!! Love them!

  • Are those two hosts still there. They've changed a lot.

  • Ken Shaw and Christine Bentley are still there. They anchor at 6 pm instead now though.

  • This is what I remember growing up, this theme and intro...how far Ken and Christine have come...

  • Apparently, Dave is retiring in March '09.

  • Tim Weber and entertainment reporter Jacintha Wesselingh were fired this week, along with roughly 100 other staff.

  • Christine is not the brightest bulb at 9 Channel Nine Court...proven the day she went out to interview farmers about what made for a better Jack 'o Lantern, a male or a female pumpkin...blindly following what the curmudgeonly assignment desk editor proposed as a story...guess she didn't study that at the Sorbonne.

  • haha well she must be doing something right...she's been there since '77. maybe dave can deal with that pumpkin issue better :)

  • Guys lets not wax poetic too much about anchors getting along. Onscreen chemistry is not necessarily offscreen chemistry. You the people like a duo and it shows in the ratings, they stay on for a while. Toronto media is full of pairings who dislike/d each other: Tom Cheek/Jerry Howarth, etc. I worked at CTV and its as much fun as a rectal exam.

  • Similar thing at A-Channel Barrie/Toronto, Lance Chilton and Jayne Prichard have been working there for a long time.

  • i will chime in with others, ken shaw and christine bentley have been on the air together for about 20 years. that really is quite an achievement. they must actually get along; it wouldn't be possible to hide infighting or clashing egos for so long.

  • CFTO/CTV has been #1 for years. Ken, Christine and the other on-air people have real chemistry and it definately shows when you watch. Anne-Marie and Leslie at Global are both dull and lack genuine chemistry, seems fake. Anne and Gord at City do have good chemistry, but that isn't good enough since CityNews is in 3rd spot in the ratings.

  • holy crap...can u believe they're still ancoring ctv news @ six 15 years later???

same goes for citytv's citynews. marc and anne have been reporting there for a long time too

  • well, talk about long-standing newscast tandems in toronto...

first, there's mroczkowski and martineau on city--they were first paired on the late-night citypulse, before anne moved up to the supper hour replacing dini petty...

then there's ken shaw and christine bentley...i can't believe they've been a steady news tandem, too!

  • ken shaw and christine bentley have been reporting the news together since the very early 1980's. they used to be the late evening anchors.

  • My mistake, Baton bought CTV and then merged the BBS stations into CTV.

  • In 1998 Baton Broadcasting and it's assets (including CFTO-TV) were sold to CTV.

  • Do you know who was the announcer at the time?

  • The legendary Dave Devall.

  • Wow, this brings back memories.

Does anyone have any of the really old news clips, remember, when the set used to be completely blue? These would go back to 1982, 83?

  • Alex Rampaul's parent Geeta Rampaul saw a CFTO News reporter on CP24's Rewind on October 6 2007. CP24's Rewind is a historical newscasts from Citytv's CityNews back in the 1980's and 90's.

  • thank you SO MUCH for posting this. I've been searching for some late 80s/early 90s CFTO videos for forever now!

do you have any World Beat News opens?

  • Wow look at Christine Bently's hair. I don't even recognize her there. And Ken Shaw hasn't changed a bit since that aired.

Geeze I don't know if Majestic Superstore even exists anymore.

"Baby Nora" is maybe 18/19 years old now.

  • This particular open was changed to CFTO CTV News when CTV acquired BBS in 1998.

  • You said that even though in 1994 the station became part of the Baton Broadcasting System (BBS) and had that same particular opening for CFTO Nightbeat News is that right?

  • Is that logo with the 9 in there similar to the Baton Broadcasting System's (BBS) logo?

  • Well this must be the opening for CFTO-TV Nightbeat News back in the 1990's. This video must have been recorded on March 29 1989 I was born two years later on March 25. I have probably remembered this opening when I was a baby.

  • I love that nickel table....I want it!!!!

  • This particular open was used from 1988-1998. The theme was used through early 1999, however.
