  • This morning I listened to an AT40 rebroadcast from October 20,1979--that song was the number one song that week.

  • FIFTHISLAND..IT'S 1979 NOT 1980..GREAT SONG NONE THE LESS..

  • @2020TYBO just that one year separates the idiot and the genius

  • @vagueandinfinite..OHH..K??..

  • Who do you choose Herb Alpert or Chuck Mangione?

  • I'd love to see some dance program on TV create a ballet around this classic tune.

  • @Juliaflo do it yourself-that's the damn problem with this whole damn country-waiting on some dumbass tv show-go out and request it and dance in frnot of everybody to it!

  • @vagueandinfinite Actually, that was the idea I had in mind. I do dance to this tune, and at my age, LOLOLOLOL.

  • this song is ageless,,1979..2011..no difference..still love it..seductive..appreciate more now amidst all the new genre..

  • Still reminds me of the "Vicki von Vicki" episode of WKRP.

This song is gnarly, gritty and just bad ass!

That lousy Biggie Smalls song always pissed me off and does so even more now that it's considered by the younger generation's radio marketers as a classic. When's the last time anyone heard Rise on the radio? I was probably in my parents Volare!

  • @jasper911sc did the volare have a HEMI

  • Before Luke and Laura...

  • you definately cant teach this.....

  • Bring this jam back! Bring it back bring it back! <3

  • B.I.G used this sample?

  • Voted #1 jazz song, EVER.

  • Herb Alpert - the only person ever to have a number 1 vocal and number 1 instrumental (the vocal was "This Guy's In Love With You", 1968)

  • OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH YEAH!!!!!! I am soooo in love with this song!!!!

  • biggie biggie biggie can't you see...!!

  • Biggie picked a damn good song to sample from, he had good taste. RIP

  • Hi Sarah.

  • Muy bueno ya que invita a todo desde el relax hasta para hacer el amor.

  • luke raped laura......somebody is pretty old in here....i remember that...back on one of them soap operas...

  • Greetings from the UK! Old vinyl never dies, it just warps!! Super track, Ex Funky Fairy!

  • Where are you Sarah Jane and David Bromhead?

  • this is a great song. kick back and enjoy.lite some candles and relax with this song playing, when i have a bad day i put this song on and turn it up.

  • wow,we had this record because of the luke and laura thing. i was too young to understand it fully, but this piece of music always stuck with me. i still love it :)

  • the perfect 'night drive' record.

  • Luke and Laura on General Hospital

  • LOL, it was popular way before there even was a Luke or Laura on GH, lol

  • actually luke raped laura to the song not long after it was released as a single...about a month or so, so yea...GH had a hand in the song's success

  • How do you figure a soap opera with a staged rape scene for entertainment helped the song ?

I think the song stood fine on it's own since it was released way before movies started pumping hit tunes out to the viewers, but that's just my 2 cents for what it is worth.

  • I guess it's subjective. But your original statement, that the song was popular "way before there even was a Luke or Laura," is false because Luke and Laura had both been on the show for years before the song was released. Never mind that approximately 8-9 million people were watching them daily at the time.

  • Ok, pat yourself on the back for getting me on a technicality, lol

I never watched soaps, sister & mother was into that stuff, yuck, lol

  • lol, it's cool. i happen to be...well...a big old unapologetic soap fan, so i defend them at all times. sometimes it's obsessive, as you can see lol

  • Yeah, my relative's favorite saying to me when I complained they was watching soaps was go get your own place, then you can watch whatever you like, lol

  • @jaetee83 i got raped to mandy by brry manilow and not one damn person watched muchless 8-9 million not even when i gave myself an abortion behind the stairs of a gay bar

  • very sexy music...

  • I also believe that the orginial cut is longer on the album. BTW...Abe Loborial(SP) is a funky bass player.

  • Right - "1980." I wish I could hear that one again. And, as I remember, since they didn't use it for the Olympics that year, NBC instead played it as their intro bed to their baseball broadcasts that year - including the World Series.

  • Interesting. I did not know that.

  • I wish this offering were actually true to it's title: "1980". This song is "Rise" (from the same album) but it's NOT "1980."

"1980" was a song Herb wrote for the 1980 Olympics, which were aborted (from the American perspective) by Jimmie Carter's decision to keep US OUT of the Moscow Summer games that year.

And so "1980" never received the recognition it really deserved.

IMO, it was right up there with Chuck Mangione's

  • Notorious B.I.G. - Hypnotize

  • My early memories of falling in love with jazz back when I was 12!!

  • Im not sure this was a digital recording back in 79. If it was then it must have been on a

3M multitrack. I know Donald Fagen;s night fly was digitally one of the earliest digital recordings.

  • Great observation. Rise was indeed recorded in February of 1979 on a 3M digital 32 track in studio D at A&M Records.

  • I sure hope the back up musicians are getting royalties. After all Herb is great, but ah those musicians. With that oh so sweet deep funk, what would the song be without their funky input? I'm not black, but long, long, long live black people and their soulful grooves!!

  • Songwriters and producers are the ones that get royalties. For example bassist Louis Johnson actually came up with the bassline for bille jean yet either did not accept or was not offered royalties

  • Great song for long, slow lovemaking

  • Yes.

  • @NORRIN68 I go slower than that;) Great song

  • @NORRIN68 I go slower than that, 15 hours;) Great song

  • This is an awesome song; perfect for a long drive. BTW, A&M was bought by Polygram in the early '90s, now owned by Universal - not that it matters...

  • A&M - Alpert & Moss.

  • I wonder if Herb gets royalties for the sample taken at 3:23? It's been used for millions of rap songs. I'm sure he's on top of it since he owns A & M Records.

  • sorry, but my boyfriend and I, at the time, called this the "Rape Song", because of Luke and Laura. Yikes, sorry, just brings back memories. Adore Herb Alpert. I think he had a big thing with starting the Carpenters

  • @trishanurse36 now i know why i became a serial rapist who strikes at sunrise!

  • thanks 4 posting this now i gotta idea where biggie got it 4rm
