he's my uncle and this is one of the first times i have actually seen the crash. I'm so glad that he's okay. He was the toughest driver out there and that's why he came back and raced again.
Ernie has been and will always bee my facorite driver. I can remember hoping and praying that he would recover after this accident and when he finally did it was awesome. I can remember the Talledaga crash on October 11th 1998, if I remember right. Was not a good day but I am glad he pulled thru.
everytime some idiot see a wreck they bring dale sr in the argument. woulda coudla sholuda. let the dude fukin rest in peace, its over. root for jr and hope he turns it around.
You know, at the time they changed it, I didn't really like the rule about not racing back to the line for the caution anymore. But looking back on wrecks like this now, it totally makes sense.
@spf150 the crash that forced him to retire was at Michigan in August of 1999 during the Busch Series practice. It was an 8 am practice and the fog and dew were not lifted from the track. He lost control, crashed, and suffered nearly the same head injury as he did in 1994. At the Southern 500 a few weeks later he announced his retirement. The Talladega crash happened in 1998, he raced most of 1999 before the crash.
I'm starting to think 1996 was the point where the higher ups in NASCAR said "I think we need to make this sport safer". Thank god for the safer barriers and better designed cars.
No you mean 2001 after Dale's crash. From 1996 to 2001 they didn't do shit to help. Safer Barriers didn't come out till 04 and COT came out last year.
@flclfan85 skip ahead about 5 years, 2001, after the Blaze Alexander crash at charlotte in 2001. NASCAR got with the program and mandated all drivers use the HANS system.
@dash662 The HANS IS overrated - ask Ward Burton and his concussion in 2002, Sterling Marlin and his spinal injury in 2002, Jerry Nadeau and his near-fatal injuries in 2003, Denny Hamlin and his concussion in 2008, etc. The HANS is not the answer and never was - the answer is to take 20 MPH out of the speed of the cars. A wreck like this it wouldn't matter, but most other wrecks it absolutely would.
@MurphyMonster I've been going to races since 1989 and have been following the sport since seeing Swede Savage die at Indianapolis in 1973. A race 30 MPH slower than what they're running here is eminently better than a race at 190.
I remember this race which i was there that race Erine got hard hit but Robby slammed the wall very hard which that is good enough to destoryed that inside wall (i saw this wall was completely destoryed) that time i was 14 yrs old..i never forget that race. Terry Labonte won that race.
Hey Yo GMAC, we're in the same boat. This race was my 14th b-day present. I was right there in turn 2. I'm a wrestling fan too and the newly formed nWo was there with Kyle Petty and there were also 2 WCW cars. Great times.
Holy crap I was at this race for my 14th birthday to! I was a huge bill elliott fan, still am. But this was my first race ever amd I have gone to many many more since.
i wish dat the hans sistem dat we have now save dale´s life =) did you ever see da movie dale? dat is a good mivie, and da number 14 hits the wall really bad
You'd hear me say that when there was a hard crash on the racetrack. "Spin": Cars spinning, "Crash": Single-car crash, "Multiple crash": self-explanatory, "Savage crash": instances like this.
Ernie Irvan was a piece of shit

ur gay. speed is what makes racing so epic. -_-
aesutton 11 months ago
@aesutton Speed means nothing. They can race even better at 165 MPH than they do at 180-plus.
STP43FAN1 11 months ago
@aesutton Speed means NOTHING. 165 is fast enough for a place like Charlotte. Racing is about passing - LEAD CHANGES. It is not about speed.
STP43FAN1 11 months ago
@STP43FAN1 So... a race at 30 mph. is better than a race at 190 mph. because there is more passing? Have you ever been to a race in your life?
